TEHRAN (Iran News) – With only five months before the start of this year’s World Cup in Qatar, concerns have been raised about the performance of Iran national football team in Doha.

Dragan Skocic’s side lost to Algeria 2-1 Sunday night in a friendly match but what is more worrying is the management challenge in the football federation ahead of the prestigious event.

The federation is leading by an acting president and it could be a huge blow to the team’s preparation for this year’s World Cup.

The Iranian fans have a strong fear of being humiliated by powerhouses England in the competition after the National Team’s lackluster performance against the Algerian team.

Iran are to play the U.S. and Wales in Group B as well.

Many critics argue that Skocic is not a good option to lead the National Team in the World Cup, but the federation’s disorganization is the bigger problem at the moment.

The federation has to arrange more friendlies, however, it should first find its new president in September.

Iran football can make history to qualify for the World Cup next stage for the first time ever but the federation wastes the opportunity without a shadow of a doubt.

It cannot appreciate the chance to access this significant achievement.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Head of Trade Promotion Organization of Iran (TPOI) said that $1 billion trade with neighboring country of Qatar is on Iran’s agenda.

Alireza Peyman-Pak, Head of Trade Promotion Organization of Iran said on Saturday with regards to the upcoming visit of Iranian President to Qatar and said, “Participating in Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) and holding bilateral talks with senior Qatari officials have been cited as the two main aims behind upcoming visit of Iranian President Raeisi to Qatar.”

Turning to the high capacities and opportunities of cooperation between Iran and Qatar, Peyman-Pak stated, “In addition to holding talks pertinent to oil by senior officials of Iranian Petroleum Ministry, Iranian ministers of industry and tourism will also hold bilateral talks with their Qatari counterparts for the development of trade and tourism cooperation.”

He put the current trade volume exchanged between Iran and Qatar at about $300 and $400 million which is very negligible and stated, “With the planning made in this regard, it is expected that bilateral trade between the two countries will increase to $1 billion next year.”

Cooperating in the field of industrial development for exporting products to third countries and using high capacities and capabilities of Qatar for development of value chain and transit are of the other issues with regards to expanding trade ties between the two countries, he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the deputy minister of industry referred to the opportunity of Free Trade with Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) next year (to start March 21, 2022) and also lucrative $500 billion market of EAEU and stated that giant steps have been taken in order to expand trade and economic activities with EAEU member states.

Iran and Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation in a variety of areas at the end of the two countries’ seventh Joint Economic Committee meeting which was held in Isfahan in late November 2020.

Based on this MOU, the two sides agreed to cooperate in forming a joint trade working group between the two countries, establishing trade centers between the private sectors of the two sides, establishing commercial affiliates in the embassies of the two countries in Tehran and Doha, and using the ports of the two countries to boost the export and import of goods.

Cooperation between the two countries’ chambers of commerce to encourage the private sectors of the two sides for joint ventures, the development of cooperation in the fields of agriculture, electricity, water and wastewater and gas, cooperation in the field of cultural heritage, handicrafts, and tourism, including holding a cultural week in Isfahan, were among other provisions of the mentioned MOU.

He added that the private sector has an especial role in economic development and this role should be more colorful. He noted that traders should not think only of exports, adding that Iranian and Qatari traders can create the ground for expansion of trade between the two states through launching a fully Iranian company or in cooperation with a Qatari owner.

Then Head of the Iran-Qatar Joint Chamber of Commerce Mr. Adnan Mousapoor, for his part, extended an especial gratitude to Qatar’s Ambassador to Tehran for expansion of economic relations with Iran and pointed to the significance of trade development with Qatar. He added that the main approach of the chamber is not merely promotion of exports but it is more focused on the joint investment between Tehran and Doha.

Mousapoor went on to say that the chamber seeks to launch a permanent exhibition of Iran in Qatar to put on display for the public the capacities of the country in the fields of tourism, industries, culture and technical and engineering services.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has described Iran’s neighbors as the country’s priority, saying President Hassan Rouhani’s HOPE initiative demonstrates Tehran’s approach to regional countries.

Zarif made the remarks in a tweet early Monday after meeting with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and his Qatari counterpart Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani in Doha.

“Excellent consultations with my brothers H.H. Emir of Qatar @TamimBinHamad & DPM/FM @MBA_AlThani_ on expansion of constructive bilateral relations & enhanced coordination on regional & global issues,” Zarif tweeted.

“#HOPE initiative is Iran’s approach to the region,” he added.

Addressing the UN General Assembly meeting in September 2019, President Rouhani presented Iran’s HOPE initiative which calls on all regional countries to cooperate in order to promote security in the Persian Gulf.

On Sunday evening, Zarif discussed the latest developments in Tehran-Doha relations in different fields with Qatar’s emir, describing the existing potential to expand bilateral ties as positive.

During the meeting, Zarif explained Iran’s stance with regard to expanding its relations with regional countries. He also briefed the emir on the latest developments in the Vienna talks between Iran and the other parties to a 2015 nuclear deal.

For his part, the Qatari emir underlined the importance of bilateral relations between Tehran and Doha, and voiced his country’s willingness to further expand the ties.

Earlier in the day, Zarif told his Qatari counterpart that the Islamic Republic’s foreign policy approach is based on the expansion of relations with regional states.

He also called intra-regional talks aimed at boosting stability in the region a vital necessity.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC), together with the Qatar Football Association (QFA), on Thursday confirmed Doha, Qatar, as the venue for this year’s AFC Champions League single-leg final, which will be held on December 19.

With the successful conclusion of the AFC Champions League West zone matches in Qatar recently, as well as the upcoming preparations to host the East region fixtures next month, the AFC noted that the QFA met all the necessary hosting capability, capacity and medical infrastructure to host the final of Asia’s premier club competition, the-afc.com reported.

AFC Secretary-General Dato’ Windsor John, said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly made the decision on the venue for this year’s final more complex particularly in these uncertain times of travel and health restrictions.

“In addition to the numerous restrictions, the AFC also wanted to protect the important principle of sporting fair play. This will be, unlike previous years, a one-off final and we therefore needed to ensure that there was no unfair advantage to one team or the other.

“The successful staging of the AFC Champions League (West) is testament to the capability of the QFA and the Qatar government and we now look forward to building on the spirit of collaboration as we prepare to resume the captivating action from the East group stage to the final.”

Additionally, the AFC also had to consider the ability of the host to deliver such requirements among others, the video assistant referee technical arrangements, medical requirements and commercial obligations.

The AFC Champions League East region group stage will kick off on November 18, before the round of 16 takes place on December 6 and 7. The knockout Stage will commence with the quarterfinals on December 10 before the Semifinal on December 13.

Best of West

Persepolis defender Shoja Khalilzadeh’s goal against the UAE’s Sharjah on the final matchday of the group stage was voted as the AFC Champions League 2020 Goal of the West.

The center-back’s far-post header with two minutes into the game put the Reds on their way to a 4-0 victory over the Emirati side on September 24.

Khalilzadeh’s goal claimed 48 percent of the votes – registered by the Asian football fans – to stand above Esteghlal striker Cheick Diabate’s header goal against Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli – also on matchday six – which finished on 34 percent.

Also among the candidates were goals from Sepahan’s Reza Mirzaei (against Al Sadd), Sharjah’s Welliton (against Al Taawoun), Al Duhail’s Abdullah al-Ahrak (against Sharjah), Al Nassr’s Abderrazak Hamdallah (against Sepahan), Al Sadd’s Hassan al-Haydos (against Sepahan), Al Taawoun’s Faisel Darwish (against Sharjah), Pakhtakor’s Jaloliddin Masharipov (against Shabab Al Ahli), and Al Nassr’s Abdulrahman al-Obaid (against Al Sadd).

In a statement released on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry welcomed the beginning of negotiations between the Kabul government, Afghan political groups and the Taliban in Doha.

What follows is the text of the statement, published by the ministry’s official website:

The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the beginning of intra-Afghan talks between the Kabul government, Afghan political groups and the Taliban, and hopes that the talks will be held within a context of comprehensive understanding among Afghans and without any foreign interference. It also hopes that the negotiations will lead to the desired results, including the establishment of lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan as well as security in the region.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has always emphasized that there is no military solution to the problems in Afghanistan and the continued presence of foreign forces is one of the main reasons for the continuation of war in the country. All issues and problems in Afghanistan can be resolved only through dialogue and negotiation, and the responsible withdrawal of foreign troops is an inevitable prerequisite for achieving peace and security in that country.

The Islamic Republic of Iran hopes that the Afghan government, political groups and the Taliban could reach a lasting agreement while preserving the valuable achievements of the Afghan people, including the Constitution, democratic structures, inclusive political participation, the rights and dignity of women, and the rights of ethnic and religious minorities. Iran also hopes that the agreement will ensure peace, tranquility, well-being and prosperity for the Afghan people and in turn enable Afghan refugees to return to their country and play their part in the reconstruction, growth and development of Afghanistan.

The Islamic Republic of Iran once again expresses its readiness to assist in advancing the peace process in Afghanistan as in the past and to provide its facilities and capabilities to the Afghan brothers and sisters for this purpose. Iran also strongly condemns any political opportunism and profiteering from the intra-Afghan talks, especially by the US government for electoral purposes and considers such moves to be disruptive to the talks.
