The current death toll, which is hovering just below the one million mark, could easily grow twofold without a “concerted” effort to make an effective vaccine widely available as soon as possible, Ryan said in a Friday news conference, RT reported.

“Unless we do it… the number you speak about (two million deaths) is not only imaginable, but sadly very likely,” he said.

The official also spoke about the ongoing increase in spread rates registered worldwide in the past few weeks after anti-coronavirus lockdowns were eased in many countries. Ryan cautioned against blaming the latest spike on young people, who have allegedly become the primary spreaders.

“I really hope we don’t get into finger wagging: it’s all because of the youth,” he said. “The last thing a young person needs is an old person pontificating and wagging the finger.”

The situation in Europe, where several countries, including France and the UK, reported the highest-ever daily rises in COVID-19 cases, remains very “worrying,” WHO officials have said, urging the authorities to do their best to try and halt the spread before the season of regular flu comes around.

“We are at the end of September and we haven’t even started our flu season yet, so what we are worried about is the possibility that these trends are going in the wrong direction,” WHO’s technical lead on coronavirus, Maria Van Kerkhove, said.

Globally, more than 32.3 million people have contracted the disease with over 980,000 succumbing to it, the latest figures by Johns Hopkins University show.

“Beirut has never gone through what it went through yesterday,” Abboud said.

On Tuesday evening in Lebanon’s capital city of Beirut, two huge explosions in its port sent an enormous blast wave across the city. The scale of the damage is huge, with buildings miles from the port lying in ruin.

Lebanon’s prime minister, Hassan Diab, said the cause of the explosion was 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a common industrial chemical used in fertilizer and as a component in mining explosives. Diab declared a national day of mourning for the victims of the explosion.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Mexico has overtaken Britain to become the country with the third-most deaths due to COVID-19, according to data released by the Health Ministry on Friday night.

Reported fatalities of COVID-19 in Mexico rose 688 from Thursday to reach 46,688, the data shows.

The number of cases rose by a daily record of 8,458 to 424,637. Britain has 46,204 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg reported.

The high death rate in Mexico indicates actual cases may be much higher. In Brazil, which is No. 2 behind the United States with the most number of cases and deaths, the fatality rate is about twice that of Mexico, while cases are about six times higher.

Mexico has been criticized for its lack of testing, leaving officials without information about the illness’ spread. Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell, who’s leading the country’s response on the virus, has acknowledged that while actual cases are much higher than official counts, the Health Ministry’s testing strategy is effective in tracking outbreaks.

As Mexico increasingly becomes a hot spot, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has largely focused on reactivating the economy over enacting strict lockdowns. He’s also downplayed the importance of using masks to slow the virus’ spread. In remarks on July 25, he acknowledged the pandemic has hit the country hard and led to many deaths. He attributed the toll to the prevalence of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Even so, the president maintained the spread of the virus is slowing.

“There are signs coronavirus infections are decreasing and fortunately, even though there have been deaths and it’s something that’s very painful, no one in Mexico has been left without medical attention,” Mr. Lopez Obrador said. “Hospitals haven’t been saturated because we’re alert. We’re addressing the problem in a timely and responsible way.”
