Fire Engulfs Nursing Home in Croatia , At Least 6 Dead

According To Iran News, A fire engulfed part of a nursing home in northern Croatia early Saturday, killing at least six people, authorities said.

The blaze erupted around 5 a.m. in a privately-run nursing home in the village of Andrasevac, 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Zagreb, the capital. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

“Unfortunately, according to initial information we have received, six people died,” Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic told reporters after arriving on the scene. “At this moment, we don’t have enough information to be able to say anything else.”

“We need to wait until the authorities finish their job,” Plenkovic added, AP reported.

Croatian media said the fire erupted in a wooden building close to the main building of the nursing home. N1 TV said about 20 people were staying there when the fire broke out.

Police said the fire was put out quickly, but they could not immediately enter the charred building to conduct the probe.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Croatia is voting on Sunday in a tight presidential election, with the ruling conservatives seeking to keep their seats days before the country takes over the European Union’s presidency for the first time.

Some 3.8 million voters in the European Union’s newest member state, Croatia, can pick among 11 candidates in the election, but only three are considered to be the front runners while the others are lagging far behind.

Conservative incumbent Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic is running for a second term, challenged by leftist former Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic and right-wing singer Miroslav Skoro, Euronews reported.

Though the post is largely ceremonial in Croatia — the president formally commands the army and represents the country abroad — keeping the presidency is important for the ruling Croatian Democratic Union party as its government is set to assume the EU rotating chairmanship on Jan. 1 that that will include overseeing Brexit and the start of post-Brexit talks.

Analysts have predicted that a runoff vote will be held in two weeks as none of the candidates is expected to win an outright majority and they are all polling close to one another.

Grabar-Kitarovic had started off stronger than other candidates but her position has weakened after she made a series of gaffes during the campaign.

She is still believed to have a slight lead going into the election, followed closely by Milanovic. Skoro is trailing third, chipping away right-wing votes from Grabar-Kitarovic.

Analysts believe that Grabar-Kitarovic and Milanovic — who represent two main political options — will face each other in the Jan. 5 runoff, but they haven’t completely ruled out an upset by Skoro.

Though it has recovered since the 1991-95 war that followed the breakup of former Yugoslavia, Croatia still has one of the poorest economies in the EU and corruption is believed to be widespread.

Critics have blasted the government for setting the election three days before Christmas when many people travel abroad.

During the meeting, Mr. Stambuk said that he has been in Tehran for three months and during this short period he has found out that Iran has not been presented to the world as it deserves.

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

He went on to say that cruel unilateral sanctions on Iran are unfortunately under way and it has created hurdles for cooperation with Iran, adding that regardless of the hurdles, Croatia is keen to continue its cooperation with Iran.

He blamed lack of information exchanges between both countries for recent unsatisfactory economic cooperation, adding that as long as this information-exchange does not improve and extend, the ground for developing economic cooperation will be hard.

Strambuk termed Croatia’s ports in the Baltic Sea as a gateway to European markets, adding that both countries should plan cooperation for the sanction-era and there are ways which will help this idea.

He noted he believed cooperation between small and medium-sized companies can be the best option for boosting cooperation.

He said that meeting with Mr. Shafei was aimed for finding ways for continuing the current economic cooperation and called for constant and strong ties between chambers of commerce of both countries even in provincial level, admitting that this is currently the missing link.

Shafei, for his part, pointed to the past cooperation between both countries in different fields and underlined existence of new capacities for joint cooperation between economic activists of both countries.

He also called for launching the joint commission of Iran and Croatia’s chambers of commerce which has been approved eight months ago but it still waits for action.

He also admitted that Iranian and Croatian traders have little information about economic opportunities of both countries and it is a major hurdle for boosting trade.

On the sanctions and its restrictions, he said Iran has been under sanctions for long time and it has learned ways to fight it.

Shafei added that although sanctions have created problems for the country and have increased the cost of international activities, it has never succeeded in stopping the country.

He said that the major task of chambers of commerce of both countries is to find ways for launching constant trade link.

In a meeting which was held at the Croatian Olympic Committee (COO) headquarters, both sides agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations in sports fields.

Salehi Amiri was accompanied by Iranian Ambassador to the Republic of Croatia Mohammad Reza Sadegh and head of Iran Swimming Federation Mohsen Rezvani in the meeting.

Zlatko Matesa, former Prime Minister of Croatia, who currently is President of the Croatian Academy of Sciences, President of the Croatian Football Federation, Davor Suker, and head of the Croatian Olympic Committee’s Department for International Cooperation, Ljiljana Ujlaki Subic attended the session.

The two sides agreed to step up experience sharing in the sports field and exchanges of athletes, coaches, teachers and sports knowledge, especially in football and water sports.

“Croatia’s sport has improved a lot in the recent years. For example, the country’s football advanced to the final match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and they can be a role model for others,” Salehi Amiri said.

“Iran also is strong in some sports and our athletes have performed well in Asia and in the world. But we believe that we need to strengthen our sports in the future,” he added.

Salehi Amiri also met with Suker in this meeting.

The legendary Croatian footballer, who helped the Chequered Ones finish third in the 1998 World Cup, said he is interested in visiting Iran in the near future. Suker also said the Croatian U-23 football team can travel to Iran to play friendly match with Iran Olympic football team.

Croatia face France in Moscow on Sunday attempting to win their first World Cup while Didier Deschamps’ side are aiming to land their second title two decades on from their triumph on home soil.

France will also be spurred on by trying to put behind them the bitter disappointment of losing the Euro 2016 final to Portugal in Paris.

It is a final few people anticipated when football’s global showpiece kicked off four weeks ago.

Croatia have brought joy to their Balkan nation of just four million people by defying the odds to progress to the final while reigning champions Germany, then Argentina and Brazil all fell by the wayside in Russia.

They have been inspired by mercurial midfielder Luka Modric while coach Zlatko Dalic, who only took over last year with the squad in chaos, has coaxed remarkable performances from his team.

AFP / FRANCK FIFEFrance’s Didier Deschamps would be just the third man to win the World Cup as a player and a coach

Deschamps would become only the third man to win the World Cup as both a player and a manager — he was captain when France lifted the World Cup in 1998.

His France side, spearheaded by 19-year-old forward Kylian Mbappe and the more seasoned Antoine Griezmann, are the favourites.

Paul Pogba has finally become a leader in midfield for France and N’Golo Kante has excelled in doing the tireless work that allows his teammates to shine, while Samuel Umtiti and Raphael Varane are the nucleus of a solid defence.

Les Bleus laboured through their group, beating Australia and Peru by the odd goal and drawing with Denmark in the only goalless game of the tournament.

Then they hit form, sweeping aside Argentina in a match which announced to the world that Mbappe is set to be an international superstar as he scored twice and outshone Lionel Messi.

But apart from that 4-3 win, France have played like a Deschamps side, with the emphasis on defence.

– On the streets –

The cavernous 80,000-capacity Luzhniki Stadium will be the setting for the final, but the biggest celebrations will take place on the streets of the winning country.

Tens of thousands of people poured onto the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris after France’s semi-final win against Belgium and expectations at home are high.

“Of course we know what’s happening in France, all the more so after seeing all the images after the Belgium game,” goalkeeper Hugo Lloris said on Saturday.

“But tomorrow we will be coming up against opponents of great quality. They deserve to be in the final just as much as us.

“They have demonstrated their worth and that they have the physical and mental resources to go and win it.”

Croatia have shown impressive resolve to withstand three successive matches that went to extra-time — Mario Mandzukic’s winner in the 109th minute defeated England in the semi-final on Wednesday.

Dalic said on Saturday he was prepared to make changes for the final if any of his players have failed to recover from their exertions.

AFP / Odd ANDERSENCan Luka Modric and Croatia rouse themselves for one last effort in Sunday’s final?

“Tomorrow is the World Cup final. Simply, the players know what that is,” the coach said.

“One thing that brings me happiness is that all my players tell me if they are not 100 percent fit.

“They know what is at stake, but if they are unable to give their all they will tell us.”

Ivan Perisic, who scored and set up Mandzukic’s winner against England, was among five Croatian players to miss training on Friday.

AFP / FRANCK FIFEZlatko Dalic only took over Croatia last year

“We need relaxation and rest to gain freshness for tomorrow,” Dalic said.

“We have some minor injuries, minor problems, and I hope my players will be ready. If not, I have great players on the bench who will be raring to go.”

The last time the two nations met in a World Cup was in the 1998 semi-final when two Lilian Thuram goals sunk a Croatian side playing in their first World Cup as an independent nation.

Win or lose, this Croatia team are already national heroes for improving on the 1998 team’s performance.

AFP / Paz PIZARROWorld Cup 2018: Final France – Croatia

Belgium proved too strong for England in Saturday’s third-place playoff as Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard scored in Saint Petersburg and the Belgians bettered the achievement of their 1986 team.

England’s Harry Kane looked tired and did not add to his six goals in the tournament, although he remains the favourite to win the Golden Boot for top scorer, barring a remarkable performance from Mbappe or Griezmann in the final — both are on three goals.

Despite coming close to reaching their first World Cup for 52 years, England coach Gareth Southgate said that “against the very best teams we’ve come up short”.
