TEHRAN (Iran News) – Some 200,000 doses of COVIRAN BAREKAT vaccine have been recently delivered to the Ministry of Health for public vaccination, Hassan Jalili, the vaccine’s production manager, said on Sunday.

After the Ministry of Health issued an emergency use license for COVIRAN vaccine, we increased the production speed, and so far about five million doses have been produced and sent to the quality testing department, which will be delivered to the Ministry of Health after quality approval, he explained.

In recent weeks, 1.3 million doses had been handed over to the Ministry of Health, reaching the whole doses to 1.5 million, he added, IRNA reported.

COVIRAN vaccine is currently being administrated by the Ministry of Health in most of the provinces of the country and has been well received by the people, he concluded.

1.5 million doses to be produced by next week

By the end of this week (August 6), a total of 1.5 million doses of vaccine will be provided to the Ministry of Health, and with the launch of the second and third lines, the production capacity of the vaccine will increase, Mohammad Mokhber, head of Headquarters for Executing the Order of the Imam, said.

Currently, one million doses of vaccine are produced in line one every week, and with the launch of lines two and three by early September, this capacity will increase two to three folds, he explained.

Homegrown COVIRAN vaccine

Made by researchers at the Headquarters for Executing the Order of the Imam, COVIRAN BAREKAT was unveiled on December 29, 2020, and received the license for public use on June 14.

It proved effective against Indian strain, according to Hojjat Niki-Maleki, head of the information center of Headquarters for Executing the Order of the Imam.

Eleven countries from Asia and South America, and a European country have asked for importing COVIRAN vaccine, Hassan Jalili, the vaccine’s production manager, has said in June.

Mass vaccination against COVID-19 started on Iranian citizens with the Russian-made Sputnik V vaccine on February 9.

While Iran continues efforts to mass-produce local candidates, 13 million doses of foreign vaccines have already been imported and others are expected soon.

Iran is also producing vaccines jointly with two countries Russia, and Australia, which may also be released by September.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, 14 vaccines are being domestically developed in the country which are in different study phases.

Razi Cov Pars is the second Iranian-made vaccine that started the clinical trial on February 27.

Developed by the Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute, the vaccine is protein-based, which employs recombinant versions of the spike protein and tutors the immune system against the virus by producing antibodies.

The vaccine is developed in 3 doses, the first two doses are injectable and the third dose is intranasal. The second dose of the vaccine will be injected into the volunteers 21 days later and the third dose will be inhaled 51 days later.

The first phase of the vaccine was performed on 133 people, the second phase also started on May 28 by being administrated to 500 people, which has so far been performed on 190 volunteers.

The third phase of the clinical study will begin in early or mid-August, with at least 20,000 people.

The mass production will start with a capacity of 1 million doses per month, which will be launched at the same time as the immunogenicity and effectiveness of the vaccine are confirmed.

One million doses of vaccine imported

Iran received 1 million doses of coronavirus vaccine on Thursday, IRNA reported.

Imported through consultation conducted by the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), the vaccines were handed over to the Ministry of Health.

However, the report did not mention the brand of vaccines and their manufacturer.

Since mid-February, 6,847,800 doses of the corona vaccine have been imported into the country.

Mass vaccination against COVID-19 started on Iranian citizens with the Russian-made Sputnik V vaccine on February 9.

While Iran continues efforts to mass-produce local candidates, several foreign vaccines have already been imported and others are expected soon.

The vaccine was unveiled on December 29, 2020, and started to be mass-produced on March 29.

Iran has also successfully completed the first phase of the human trial for Fakhra vaccine, the third domestically developed COVID-19 vaccine, named after nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh (he was assassinated in November 2020 near Tehran), that was unveiled and started the clinical trial on March 16.

The second phase of Fakhra vaccine’s human trial started on June 9 by being injected into 500 volunteers.

“Osvid-19”, the fourth domestic vaccine produced by Osvah Pharmaceutical Company is also undergoing human trials, which will also be available in early September.

On May 24, the first coronavirus vaccine made by the private sector in Iran succeeded in receiving the code of ethics and entered the phase of clinical studies.

A new shipment of the vaccine including 1.5 million doses will arrive in Iran on Thursday, he announced.

By mid-June, the domestically produced vaccine will be provided to the Ministry of Health, and the Iran-Cuba vaccine and the COVIRAN Barekat vaccine will also be approved and start mass production.

“It is predicted that by the end of June, we will have at least two domestically produced Iranian vaccines, and after that, in addition to the foreign vaccine, which will not be in large numbers, we will speed up vaccination by the homegrown ones,” he explained.

So far, about 3.2 million doses of vaccines have been imported, including Sputnik V from Russia, COVAXIN from India, AstraZeneca from South Korea, and a Chinese vaccine.

According to the Ministry of Health, some 1,378,744 people have received the first dose of vaccine and 276,667 people have received the second dose. The total number of injected vaccines in the country reached 1,655,411 doses.

Mass vaccination against COVID-19 started on Iranian citizens with the Russian-made Sputnik V vaccine on February 9.

While Iran continues efforts to mass-produce local candidates, several foreign vaccines have already been imported and others are expected soon.

Iran is currently producing vaccines jointly with three countries of Cuba, Russia, and Australia, which may also be released by September.

Domestic vaccines

COVIRAN BAREKAT, the first coronavirus vaccine made by Iranian researchers, started the third phase of the human trial in early May by being administrated to 20,000 people.

Developed by researchers at the Headquarters for Executing the Order of the Imam, the vaccine was unveiled on December 29, 2020, and started to be mass-produced on March 29.

Meanwhile, a vaccine developed by the Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute (Razi Cov Pars) is expected to become the second Iranian-made vaccine to be administered among the population in early August; which started the clinical trial on February 27.

“Osvid-19”, the fourth domestic vaccine produced by Osvah Pharmaceutical Company is also undergoing human trials, which will also be available in early September.

New cases and mortalities

In a press briefing on Monday, Health Ministry’s spokesperson, Sima-Sadat Lari, confirmed 18,408 new cases of COVID-19 infection, raising the total number of infections to 2,673,219. She added that 2,127,192 patients have so far recovered, but 5,533 remain in critical conditions of the disease.

During the past 24 hours, 351 patients have lost their lives, bringing the total number of deaths to 75,261, she added.

So far, 17,206,735 COVID-19 diagnostic tests have been performed in the country.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – One of several Iranian vaccines under development, COV-Pars started its clinical test in an event in presence of Iranian Minister of Agricultural Jihad Kazem Khavazi, Chancellor of Iran University of Medical Sciences Jalil Kouhpayezadeh, and a group of officials and researchers in Rasoul Akram Hospital in Tehran.

COV-Pars vaccine will be administered to 13 volunteers in the first stage, and then 120 volunteers will receive the vaccine in four groups of 30.

The vaccine is the first injected-inhaled recombinant corona protein which was unveiled last month in Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute in Karaj, Iran.

The institute started working on the vaccine in February last year and after the initial stages, it passed the animal test phase in April 2020.

COV-Pars is developed under the leadership of Iran’s Health Ministry and Food and Drug Organization expertise.

COVIRAN BAREKAT, the first coronavirus vaccine made by Iranian researchers of the Headquarters for Executing the Order of the Imam, was unveiled and injected into three volunteers during a ceremony on December 29, 2020.

Immunogenicity tests have been performed on about 35 volunteers so far, and the results show that the vaccine has higher immunogenicity than we expected, Mohammad Reza Salehi, clinical conductor of the Iranian coronavirus vaccine announced.

“Test results show that about 90 percent of people who received the second dose of the vaccine showed evidence of immunity after two weeks,” he added.

Iran started mass vaccination with Russian-made Sputnik V vaccine, with the priority given to medical staff, the elderly, and people with underlying diseases; and is also going to be co-produced by the two countries.

Importing vaccine from COVAX, a global initiative to ensure rapid and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, is also on the agenda.

On January 27, Health Minister Saeed Namaki said that there are four different ways to supply the coronavirus vaccine, including direct purchase from a foreign country, procurement from the World Health Organization’s COVAX facility, a joint production with a Cuban company as well as domestic production of the vaccine.
