In remarks at a Saturday session of the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters, Rouhani stressed the need for rapid detection of COVID-19 cases in the efforts to contain the pandemic in Iran.

The president said he has ordered the allocation of $100 million to the purchase of foreign testing kits that diagnose coronavirus in at most 20 minutes.

The domestic production of such rapid test kits is also underway, he noted, saying a “major development” is going to take place in the COVID-19 testing process in the country with 10,000 additional daily tests.

The president also unveiled new health restrictions for tackling the pandemic, saying people without face masks in Tehran will have to pay a 500,000 rial fine to the Health Ministry.

In late September, Rouhani said the new strict health regulations would first come into force in the capital and will later apply to other big cities across Iran.

The daily death toll from coronavirus infection in Iran has exceeded 200 in recent days, while the total number of cases since the outbreak of the disease in the country has surpassed 490,000.

More than 28,000 COVID-19 patients have died in Iran since February.

Researchers at the Iranian company, affiliated with the Amirkabir University of Technology, have developed the advanced test kit using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) system to detect COVID-19 in saliva.

The CEO of the company says the kit works on the basis of molecular identification of oral fluid for the diagnosis of coronavirus in less than an hour.

The Pasteur Institute of Iran has approved the test kits, and the company is going to mass-produce rapid kits for COVID-19, Amir Abbas Esmaeilzadeh said.

The company has received purchase orders from the Republic of Azerbaijan, Turkey, Romania, Spain, and the UK, and has applied for permission for exports to Europe, he added.

The accuracy of the Iranian test kits is 2.5 to 10 times higher than that of the ones imported from abroad, the CEO added.

In April, Iranian Vice President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari inaugurated a plant manufacturing coronavirus diagnostic test kits with a capacity to produce 100,000 kits that utilize PCR analysis and 2 million serologic test kits per week.

In a tweet Jahanpour wrote, “with the efforts of Iranian experts and knowledge-based companies, a rapid test for the detection of coronavirus based on the identification of antibodies will be available soon. These quick, low-cost, and inclusive detection methods will facilitate the step-by-step implementation of ‘Smart Distancing Plan’ in the coming weeks.”

Iran health ministry official went on to say that no drug and vaccine has yet been produced in the world to treat and prevent coronavirus and the best way to contain this epidemic, which makes social work and reopening of jobs possible, is to use COVID-19 rapid test from antibodies.

After implementing the Social Distancing Plan, Iran has initiated a second phase of the plan, so-called ‘Smart Distancing Program’ from Saturday by the reopening of low-risk businesses in all provinces except Tehran.

According to the latest statistics of Iran’s Health Ministry, 70,029 have thus far been infected with coronavirus in the country while the death toll has risen to 4,357 and 41,947 people have recovered.

Worldwide, the number of infections reaches more than 1,770,000 people, of whom 108,338 people have died.

In the unveiling ceremony held on Monday in Tehran, the ministry’s representative Second Brigadier General Amiri pointed to the 98% accuracy of this new kit, which has been confirmed by the Health Ministry, as one of the salient features of this new product.

He said that the kit is totally domestically-produced which means that its mass production, which has already been started, will continue with more speed to fulfill the needs of Iranian armed forces, the medical sector, and even to be exported to other countries if required.

Amiri added this is the second generation of test kits produced in the defense industries after the first one came out almost one month ago.

Iran Defense Ministry started mass production of face masks, disinfectants, and protective clothes from the early days the COVID-19 outbreak hit Iran. The body also unveiled advanced thermal cameras to be used as a screening tool in crowded places.

According to the Iranian Health Ministry on Sunday, 38,309 individuals have so far tested positive for the COVID-19 across the country. 12,391 patients have also recovered while the death toll has hit 2,640.
