TEHRAN (Iran News) – Calls are growing in Germany for the introduction of nationwide covid restrictions amid confusion and frustration over patchwork arrangements across the country as the infection rate continues to rise.

The majority of Germans are in favour of a more unified approach to tackling the virus, now in its third wave, according to a poll, ahead of an expected tightening of rules after the holiday weekend, The Guardian reported.

Fifty-three percent of Germans have said they would like to see the government setting the rules without the support of the 16 states, according to a poll by YouGov, in order to introduce more clarity.

The Chancellor, Angela Merkel, has persistently called for tighter, more unified rules across the country, but has frequently been overruled by the leaders of the states, leading to a weakening of her standing.

The Interior Minister, Horst Seehofer, said a nationwide approach was the only way for the country to effectively fight the virus’s spread.

“There is a great desire among the population for unified rules,” he told the newspaper Welt am Sontag, adding, “Therefore my proposal is to establish uniform rules with a federal law … which would prescribe which measures have to be taken according to the incidence value”.

A lag in reporting new infections over the holiday period is thought to be the reason for an apparent fall in the number of incidents. The Robert Koch Institute said Monday’s figure – 8,500 new covid infections, about 1,400 less than a week ago, was likely to be higher in reality due to the ‘Easter effect’, which meant fewer people were being tested. Fifty deaths were also reported.

More than 4,100 patients with covid, the highest figure since the start of February, are being treated in intensive care, 55% of whom are on ventilators. During the pandemic, the highest level of patients admitted to ICU so far was at the start of January. More than 4,600 ICU beds remain unoccupied.

While there is broad agreement that certain restrictions should be determined according to regional covid infection rates, the glaring contrast between people in Hamburg facing a night-time curfew since Friday at the same time as 60 to 70 planes a day transported an estimated 40,000 holidaymakers to the Spanish island of Mallorca has led to a sense of unrest, impatience and anger.

Reports over the weekend of Germans basking in temperatures of 20C on Mallorca’s beaches, while those who stayed at home faced an icy polar front and snowstorms, has only added to the disgruntlement.

Some politicians have even called for a delay to the summer holiday after it was suggested last week tight restrictions might remain in place until August.

Merkel criticised the patchwork approach to restrictions last week, saying she was not prepared to “stand by and watch infections rise to 100,000 a day”.

It is widely expected that after the Easter break Merkel is likely to seek to push through some of Germany’s harshest lockdown conditions yet, including night-time curfews, a reduction in permitted contacts, and an obligation on companies to test their workers or face temporary closure.

It has even been mooted by some decision-makers that Germany may have to consider closing schools and kindergartens, which reopened on March 8 in a strict shift pattern, and replacing A-level equivalent exams with teacher assessment.

A rigorous twice-weekly testing regime in schools due to be introduced before Easter has yet to be realised.

Germany’s Health Minister, Jens Spahn, promised at the weekend that the country’s sluggish vaccine programme will receive a boost later this month with a rise in the number of deliveries of doses, which he expected would lead to 20% of citizens having received their first inoculation by the start of May.

Calling the rise in the number of patients in ICU “alarming”, during a visit to a vaccine centre in Berlin on Monday he said the vaccine campaign was not capable of breaking the third wave, only a reduction in contacts, “mostly in private, in schools, at work, wherever we can”.

The introduction of administering vaccines in 35,000 doctors’ practices after Easter is expected to improve efficiency. A pilot project in the state of Saarland, where the military is running a 24hour vaccine centre, might yet be copied across the country.

So far, 12% of Germans have received a first jab, and just over 5% are fully vaccinated.

The German government has for the first time started talking concretely of a correlation between being vaccinated and being granted more freedom to return to a pre COVID-19 lifestyle, after data gathered by the RKI indicating that vaccinated people were unlikely to contribute to transmission.

Spahn said on Sunday that “people who are fully vaccinated will in future be able to be treated the same as someone who has a negative test result”.

Gerd Landsberg, the head of the German Association of Towns and Municipalities, welcomed the announcement, saying he expected it would increase people’s willingness to be vaccinated.

“If it can be ascertained that those who have already been vaccinated can no longer be contagious, they should be excluded from the necessary measures, such as having to have a test before they go shopping or visit a restaurant,” Landsberg told the Funke Mediengruppe.

“This would also considerably add to the incentive to get vaccinated,” he said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Health Ministry has announced the return of all coronavirus restrictions on concerts and cultural meetings in the fear of a new wave of the disease. “The decision has been made along with the Ministry of the Interior and all the concerts can only stream online,” Deputy Health Minister Mohsen Farhadi said in a press release published on Friday.

“Any concerts, seminars, and religious ceremonies need to be approved by the National Headquarters for Coronavirus Control,” he added.

He also said that there will be no exception for the concerts on Kish Island.

Pointing to the Fajr Music Festival that is currently underway, Farhadi expressed thanks to the organizers of the festival who decided to hold the events online.

“Holding the festival online these days of coronavirus is relay praiseworthy,” he said.

“Holding the festival was to meet the cultural needs of people. Due to the long pandemic, which has caused restrictions, people needed the festival, and this took place with the good cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and the Health Ministry,” he added.

“People can stay at home and watch the performances. I think it was a very good decision that the organizers made, giving the opportunity to people in every corner of the country and those living abroad to sit and watch the programs,” he added.

The 36th edition of the festival kicked off last Tuesday with streaming performances on fajrmusicfestival.com, nay.ir, and tiwall.com after canceling the in-person edition in Tehran due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will be running until February 21.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s death toll from the coronavirus passed 30,000 after the Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari reported 253 new fatalities from Friday to Saturday.

The announcement saw Iran put its total death toll from the outbreak at 30,123.

The number of people tested positive for COVID-19 infection rose to 526,490 following the detection of 4,103 new cases since Friday, the spokeswoman added.

She also noted that at least 423,921 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across the country.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 4,721 patients have critical health conditions, Lari noted.

Iran has been struggling with the coronavirus since announcing its first cases in February.

In recent weeks, Iran has seen daily death tolls spike to their highest-ever levels.

Restrictions

On Wednesday, Iranian officials announced a travel ban to and from five major cities, including the capital of Tehran and the holy city of Mashhad, that they said aimed to contain the virus’ spread.

The coronavirus has also spread to some of the highest levels of Iran’s government. Among those recently infected is the head of the country’s atomic energy organization, while Iran’s vice president in charge of budget and planning tested positive on Sunday.

This week, as the daily recorded death toll hit the record for three times, authorities announced tighter restrictions for the hard-hit capital of Tehran.

Recently reopened universities and schools, as well as libraries, mosques, cinemas, museums and beauty salons, shut down. In the past week, the government mandated that all Tehran residents wear face masks outdoors and in public places, warning violators would be fined. Officials promised those who tested positive would be closely tracked.

Authorities on Saturday extended the restrictions imposed in the capital for the second time to limit the spread of the virus.

Governor General of Tehran Province Anoushiravan Mohseni-Bandpey said that the restrictions have been extended for the province to October 22.

Movement restrictions this spring somewhat checked the spread of the disease. Then the government swiftly reopened the country, desperate to boost its stricken economy. Since June, the case count has steadily increased – and spiked to new heights in recent weeks.

US sanctions

As Iran approaches winter, the seasonal influenza could be an added and serious issue for the country, as it has had purchasing the flu vaccine amid new American sanctions on Iranian banks.

Iran’s Red Crescent Society said in a tweet on Tuesday that they were in charge of importing two million flu vaccine doses into the country, but that new US sanctions prevented the import.

IRNA, Tasnim News Agency and AP contributed to this story.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Nearly nine out of 10 workers want to be able to choose whether to work from home or the office once COVID-19 workplace restrictions ease, and have greater autonomy over their hours, according to research from Cisco Systems.

The pandemic has rapidly shifted attitudes towards home working, the research showed, with two-thirds of workers developing a greater appreciation of the benefits and challenges of doing their jobs remotely.

Even though only 5 per cent of those surveyed worked from home most of the time before the lockdown, now 87 per cent of workers wanted the ability to choose where, how and when they worked – blending between being office-based and working remotely, Cisco said in a report issued on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

Cisco vice-president Gordon Thomson said companies would have to reconfigure how they operate to help meet the new demands of workers, who prioritize effective communication and collaboration above everything else.

He said technology must also be used to ensure employees are safe and their data is secure in their working environment, whether in the home or the office.

This could include, for example, sensors that monitor the heating and lighting in a home work station, or technology that checks social distancing and whether people are wearing masks in the office, he said.

“It’s not just about connecting people anymore; it’s about the experience you deliver to people as they are connected,” he said in an interview.

“We are investing far more in the analytical piece that goes behind the connectivity.”

Cisco surveyed 10,000 people across 12 markets in Europe, the Middle East and Russia for its Workforce of the Future research.
