TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran said on Tuesday that the death toll of the novel coronavirus dropped to double figures for the first time in one month.

Health Ministry spokesman in Iran, Kianoush Jahanpour said the death toll from the novel coronavirus disease recorded in the past day reached 98, bringing the overall toll to 4,683.

“Unfortunately, we lost 98 of our compatriots infected with the disease… but after a month of waiting, this is the first day that the death toll has been double figures,” he told a televised news conference.

“We hope that this path will continue with your ongoing cooperation” in observing health guidelines aimed at stopping the spread of the virus, he added.

Jahanpour said another 1,574 people were found to have been infected with the virus.

That took the overall number of infections in Iran’s outbreak to 74,877, he said, adding that 48,129 of those hospitalized had recovered and been discharged.

Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi said Monday new cases of coronavirus infections and deaths from the viral outbreak have been declining across most of the country’s 31 provinces.

Iran is the Middle Eastern country hardest hit by the new coronavirus. It announced its first COVID-19 cases on February 19 – the deaths of two people in the holy city of Qom.

The government of President Hassan Rouhani has struggled to contain the outbreak that began nearly two months ago.

It shut schools and universities, postponed major events and imposed a range of other restrictions, but it has stopped short of ordering lockdowns.

The government has stressed the importance of striking a balance between the measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus and getting the economy back on track.

Government spokesman Ali Rabiei said Monday said Iran will protect its people from the economic impact of the respiratory disease.

Rouhani announced last week that “low-risk” businesses would be allowed to reopen in order to protect Iran’s sanctions-hit economy.

The move took effect on Saturday outside Tehran and it is set to be implemented in the capital a week later.

Businesses and services seen as high-risk, including theaters, swimming pools, saunas, beauty salons, shopping centers, and restaurants, have yet to reopen.

According to the latest data, 1,853,495 people have so far been affected by the coronavirus with the death toll amounting to 114,254 and the number of recoveries surpassing 423,000.

The US has surpassed Italy as the country with the highest number of coronavirus deaths with more than 22,000 recorded by Monday morning.

Spain is the second most-hit country with the new coronavirus pandemic with 166,831 cases and a death toll of 17,209.

The death rate in Italy and France – two of the countries worst-affected by the coronavirus – appears to be slowing, as the number of people confirmed to have the disease across the world rose beyond 1.8 million.

Italy’s Civil Protection Agency reported the lowest number of coronavirus deaths since March 19, with 431 fatalities recorded in the last 24 hours, compared with 619 the previous day.

France reported 315 deaths in hospitals over the last day, compared with 345 the day before. President Emmanuel Macron is due to address the nation for a third time later on Monday but is expected to stress the need for the lockdown to continue.

Germany is the fifth country with most infections which have reached 127,854 and a fatality number of 3,022.

Mainland China reported 108 new coronavirus infections, more than doubling from the previous day to reach a one-month high, as the number of single-day imported cases hit a record, official data released Sunday showed. Almost all the new infections — the biggest daily count since March 6 — involve travelers from overseas. Just two out of the 99 cases were locally transmitted.

Iran registered a total of 71,686 infection cases as of Sunday, of whom 4,474 died and 43,894 have recovered.
