Iran, Slovakia discuss cooperation on anti-narcotics efforts

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Head of Iran’s Drug Control Headquarters (DCH) Eskandar Momeni and President of Slovakian Police Force conferred on cooperation on fighting against narcotics in a meeting in Vienna.

Underlining the role of Iran, regarding first, its adjacency with Afghanistan that produces 90 percent of narcotics in the world and second, its strategic location that makes it a gateway for east Asia to European countries in anti-narcotics efforts and terrorism, Momeni said “just during the past recent 10 days, Iranian police has seized eight tons of narcotics at western Iranian borders which were supposed to be smuggled to western countries.”

The Iranian official expressed readiness for transfer of knowledge and experience to Slovakia in this sector.

In a Tuesday meeting with Jean-Luc Lemahieu, UNODC Director of Policy Analysis and Public Affairs in Vienna, Momeni warned that the increase in production of crystal methamphetamine in Afghanistan from 200 tons per annum to its present 9,000 tons per year rings the alarm bell for the international community and will harm regional as well as western countries.

“Some ten tons of the seized drugs in the said time were crystal meth, registering 600 percent increase compared to the same period in the preceding year.”

Lamenting about the unjust US sanctions against Iran, Momeni said “unfortunately, the sanctions have a negative impact on Iran’s anti-narcotics efforts.”

He urged the international community to take required measures about the US sanctions on Iran.

In this meeting, the two sides signed an MOU on establishing a regional center for capacity building and conducting investigations to promote drug rehabilitation quality and to improve public immunity and health.

Momeni arrived in Vienna on October 12 to meet and talk with senior UN officials including the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Austrian Police Chief, the Slovak Police Chief, and some other senior Austrian drugs officials.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past four decades. The country has spent more than $700 million on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries. The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past four decades.

Narcotic cargo seized in Khuzestan province

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Five hundred kilograms of narcotic cargo have been seized in Omidiyeh, Khuzestan province, according to Omidiyeh’s prosecutor general.

Following large-scale intelligence operations, police forces seized 500 kilograms opium in Omidiyeh which was destined to Ahwaz, Mehr quoted Arsalan Karimi as saying on Saturday.

Karimi added that two drug smugglers were arrested and handed over to court.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer-long border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

In comments on July 9, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Majid Takht Ravanchi said 3,815 Iranian law enforcement forces have lost their lives and over 12,000 others have been wounded in the war on drug trafficking over the past 40 years.

Over the past three decades, Iran has seized approximately 11,000 tons of different types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, he added, saying that in 2018 alone, Iranian forces carried out 1,557 operations against drug traffickers, seizing approximately 807 tons of different types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

According to the “World Drug Report 2019” of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in 2017 Iran had seized “the largest quantity of opiates … accounting for 39 percent of the global total,” the envoy stated.

This year it has been the latest one captured by police forces. Earlier this month, in Western Azarbayjan province, another narcotic cargo was detected and seized by police officers.

The United Nations credits Iran with the seizure of 80 percent of the opium netted around the world.
Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian police have lost more than 3300 of their personnel in the country’s combat against narcotics.

Police seize 1.4 tons of drugs in Zahedan

Zahedan Police Chief Colonel Hamid Reza Akbari said the anti-narcotics police busted a gang of smugglers who were trying to transport 1,410 kilograms of from the border regions into the province.

According to the police chief, the big haul included 866kg of opium, 500kg of heroin, 14kg of hashish, and some 30kg of other illicit drugs.

During the operation, three smugglers were arrested, he added, saying that the force is on the move to find other elements of the drug trafficking band.

Iran is at the forefront of the fight against drug trafficking and thousands of Iranian forces have been so far martyred to protect the world from the danger of drugs.

According to reports, in 2018 alone, Iranian forces carried out 1,557 operations against drug traffickers, seizing approximately 807 tons of different types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Police capture 129kg of heroin in Alborz province

Police Chief of Alborz Province Lieutenant Ali Asgari said the illicit haul was captured in a joint operation by the police forces of Alborz and Tehran province.

Over 10 tons of different illicit drugs were seized in Alborz province in the past Iranian year (ended on March 20), which indicates more than 50% increase compared with its past year.

The drugs included over 5.5 tons of opium, close to 2 tons of morphine, 846 kg hashish, and 1,060 kg of other illicit drugs.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past four decades.

IRICA stands at 2nd rank in countering goods smuggling

In addition, IRICA won the first rank in the fight against drug trafficking.

Deputy President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) for Planning and Intl. Affairs Ali Baeidi Mofradnia made the remarks on Fri. and said, “monitoring cross-border trade is IRICA’s main task but this supervision has two completely opposite aspects.”

On the one hand, enough control and supervision on the cross-border trade is expected from an organization like IRICA, he said, adding, “as a matter of fact, the main duty of IRICA is not to collect integrated tax and customs duties, rather, it is duty bound to safeguard right of people.”

Supervision is the basic and fundamental duty of all customs offices in the world, so that streamlining and presenting facilities in the field of trade is another aspect of these duties, he added.

Presently, 25 organizations in the country are directly involved in cross-border trade system which are cooperating with IRICA in relevant field, he highlighted.

Police bust big smuggling ring, seize 6 tons of narcotics in SE Iran

The police force of the Sistan and Balouchestan province, southeastern Iran, have successfully busted a big drug trafficking ring in Mehrestan, seizing a huge haul of narcotics in an armed clash.

Police Chief of Sistan and Balouchestan province Brigadier General Mohammad Ghanbari said on Tuesday, during a clash that went on for four hours a 6-ton consignment of illicit drugs was seized by the police.

According to him, this is the biggest and heaviest shipment of narcotics confiscated during the past year.

Seven Toyota Land Cruisers and with a number of guns along with ammunition were also confiscated during the operation.

Noting that the armed clash left a number of criminals dead and injured, he said fortunately, no police force was killed or harmed at the scene.

He added that the killed and the injured drug dealers were taken to unknown points on the other side of the border by their fellowmen.

More than 200 tons of different kinds or narcotics have been discovered in Sistan and Balouchestan province during the current Iranian year (ends on March 20), General Ghanbari said.
