TEHRAN (Iran News) – Speaking in the meeting of the administrative council of Qom Province on Friday, President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi stated that executive affairs must have a guarantee for implementation.

Referring to the government’s provincial trips, the president said that the government’s approach in provincial trips is that what is decided its implementation should be guaranteed.

Emphasized that the actions taken by the government should be announced to the people, he added, “It is necessary to determine the effects of actions in people’s lives. People understand the situation well.”

The president added that what the administration is looking for is an effortful work and it must be achieved, and the results must be determined.

Raisi added, “If these measures do not work, it will cause people despair and reduce trust of them towards the government, and this social capital will be harmed.”

“On the other hand, the path is not smooth, but all the managers have the necessary ability to remove these obstacles,” he remarked.

The president went on to say that all managers should be accountable in four areas: first, in the presence of God Almighty, second, to the people and citizens, third, the client, and finally, accountability to the hierarchy and administrative supervisors.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the president said 6,000 soldiers from Qom were martyred during Saddam Hussein’s war against Iran in the 1980s, saying, “There is no house in this city that does not have a wounded veteran, a martyr and a prisoner of war.”

Referring to the existence of social harms in Qom, Raisi stated, “If some social harms in Qom are not prevented and treated, it will become a punishable crime.”

Regarding unemployment in Qom province, Raisi said that there are semi-closed factories that must be activated, and the solution to eliminate unemployment is to activate production centers.

Raisi also asked minister of industry, mines and trade to set up a working group to solve the province’s industrial problems with the help of the central bank, the National Development Fund and the office of governor-general in the province.

In another part of his remarks, the president considered it important to pay attention to the tourism economy and noted, “Considering the relationship between Qom and 17 provinces of the country, the issue of tourism in this province is important.”

Regarding the issue of corruption, Raisi emphasized, “People do not accept corruption, bribery and unhealthy administrative relations in the Islamic system.”

The president stressed the importance of increasing public confidence in the government, saying, “This trust is the most important component of security and the reduction of trust undermines national security.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Emphasizing that the 13th government will pursue the fight against corruption vigorously and seriously, President Seyed Ebrahim Raisi said, “People may endure poverty and hardships and livelihood difficulties, but they will not tolerate corruption.”

Speaking in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning, President Raisi emphasized that the fight against corruption was a condition for the people to vote for this government, saying, “We must be sensitive to the possibility of corruption and in no way hesitate fighting its manifestations”.

Stating that there are grounds for corruption in more or less all institutions, the President added, “One of the grounds for corruption is human resources, so in recruiting, one should focus only on efficiency and legal competencies”.

Addressing the members of the cabinet, he reiterated, “You must be very careful and safe so that there is no corruption in your subordinates”.

The President stated, “In places where there is a negative atmosphere regarding your appointments, if these conditions are not correct, defend your actions, but note that meritocracy in the thirteenth government is not just a slogan, but the basis of work”.

Dr Raisi stressed the need to obtain the opinion of various regulatory bodies before employing individuals, noting, “The fight against corruption and attention to meritocracy is one of the basic principles of government in practice. But where we have done our job properly, we should not be influenced by negative atmosphere”.

The President said that if there is corruption in the government body, the officials should first deal with the wrongdoer and then introduce them to the judicial authorities for legal proceedings, adding, “I have no red line. Neither my office, nor my deputies, nor ministers are a red line for me”.

Raisi added, “I tried to choose my colleagues from among the honest and anti-corruption people. I have verified the purity of the people around this table so far, and we must continue to monitor and take care of it”.

The President emphasized, “In the thirteenth government, for the first time in the appointments of high levels, in addition to inquiries from intelligence authorities, inquiries are also taken from other supervisory authorities such as the Inspection Organisation and the Court of Audit”.

In another part of his speech, referring to the collection plan and measures to support beggars, Raisi said, “The government has a duty to prevent child abuse and mental and moral harm to them in matters such as begging. Therefore, we support the municipalities to resolve this situation”.

Emphasizing the need to follow up on the implementation of provincial travel approvals, the President said, “The results and fruits of provincial trips in the implementation of the approvals of these trips will be revealed and it is necessary to follow up the implementation of these approvals seriously”.

Meanwhile on Tuesday evening, Raisi gave an assurance that his administration is not facing any dead-end in the course of settlement of issues.

In comments at a meeting of the Administration’s Economic Coordination Headquarters, Raisi emphasized that there is no deadlock in the process of addressing the country’s problems.

The governmental units must act in a coordinated and systematic manner so that their complementary measures would contribute to the settlement of problems, he noted.

Additionally, Raisi was given a report about the latest condition of oil exports, which stated that the volume of Iranian oil sales has increased compared to the past and that the export of petrochemical products is in a proper situation.

In the meeting, the governor of the Central Bank of Iran briefed Raisi on the status of the currency resources and the efforts to repatriate the country’s financial resources frozen abroad.

A few days after taking office in August, Raisi called on his economic team to shift the focus on efforts to normalize the sale of oil and ensure the release of the country’s funds blocked abroad.

He has also emphasized that the settlement of the economic problems should not depend on the removal of sanctions.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – In a virtual meeting with judicial officials from around the country, Judiciary Chief Hojjatoleslam Seyed Ebrahim Raisi said that the duty of the judiciary is to support production and more than 2,000 production units have been activated by Judiciary efforts.

He referred to the motto of the year “Production, Support and Elimination of Obstacles” by the Leader of the Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, and said: “When the Leader announces a slogan all institutions must work to achieve this, the judiciary must be involved in any area where it is possible to remove barriers to production and support production.”

“Our colleagues activated more than two thousand production units, which deserves appreciation and thanks,” he said.

Raisi said that the duty of the judiciary is to support production and remove its obstacles.

“Last year, my colleagues tried to save more than a thousand production units from closure,” said the chief of the judiciary.

He noted: “We are confident that with the efforts of our colleagues, the support of production and the fight against corruption to support production will come to an end.”

Raisi stated: “One of the important areas of production in the judiciary is fighting corruption; because economic corruption hinders production prosperity, and if there are bribery and special privileges somewhere, the prosperity of production will not take place.”

Emphasizing that economic security must be created for production prosperity, Raisi added: “Economic security depends on the fight against economic corruption. One of the important obstacles to production is the smuggling of the goods, and it is our duty to fight it.”

Touching upon the talks on the JCPOA, he that Iran will not reverse its remedial measures on the nuclear deal until the US removal of all sanctions and verification of its measures by Tehran.

“Today, the clear policy and strategy of the Islamic Republic towards the U.S. is that it should lift all sanctions and we should verify them and then return to the nuclear deal undertakings,” Raisi said.

“Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution (Ayatollah Khamenei) did not declare this strategy in a closed-door room but in the presence of all people of Iran, and no other strategy is acceptable,” he added.

Raisi referred to certain analyses which say that the new U.S. administration is different from the Trump government, and said the Americans have always been after implementing arrogant plots against the Iranian nation and if they claim that they have changed this policy, they should prove it in practice.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – When the verdict came, it reduced the Paris court to a stunned silence: Nicolas Sarkozy was guilty of corruption and influence-peddling and sentenced to three years in prison, two of them suspended.

France’s president from 2007 to 2012 had played an “active role” in forging a “corruption pact” with his lawyer and a senior magistrate to obtain information on a separate investigation into political donations, the leading judge declared, and there was “serious and concurring evidence” of collaboration between the three men to break the law.

The conviction and sentence were dramatic, unexpected, and historic. Sarkozy, 66, had repeatedly declared his innocence and dismissed the charges as an “insult to my intelligence”.

It is, however, unlikely he will spend a day in jail. His lawyer has announced he intends to appeal, a process that would lead to a new trial, and a one-year prison sentence can be served outside jail under certain conditions, including the wearing of an electronic bracelet or limited home confinement.

While Sarkozy was not banned from holding public office, the verdict, delivered on Monday afternoon, is likely to quash his hopes of returning to public life in time for next year’s presidential election. His center-right Les Républicains (LR) party has been struggling to come up with a credible candidate since Sarkozy’s former prime minister François Fillon was engulfed in scandal during the 2017 presidential race, opening the way for Emmanuel Macron to win.

At his trial last year, the court heard how Sarkozy instructed his lawyer, Thierry Herzog, to offer the senior magistrate Gilbert Azibert a cushy job on the Côte d’Azur in return for information on an investigation into whether he had received donations from the ailing L’Oréal heiress Liliane Bettencourt.

The case, based on telephone taps, became known as the “Bismuth affair”; Paul Bismuth was the name the former president employed in connection to two burner telephones used to communicate with Herzog.

French detectives began monitoring Sarkozy’s communications in September 2013 as part of an investigation into claims he had received an illegal and undeclared €50m donation from the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi to fund his successful 2007 presidential campaign.

What they heard from the recorded conversations pointed investigators in a new and unexpected direction. They revealed the former president and Herzog were “secretly” communicating using mobile telephones registered under false names.

Additional wiretaps on these phones picked up conversations suggesting Sarkozy had been in contact with Azibert, then a member of the cour de cassation – the highest court in France – via Herzog to request confidential information about the Bettencourt case.

Sarkozy, who is embroiled in several legal cases, has repeatedly denied accusations of any wrongdoing in all past and present investigations.

He spent years attempting to have the Bismuth charges thrown out and the case dismissed. Herzog argued the secretly recorded conversations between him and Sarkozy were covered by client-lawyer privilege and could not be used as evidence.

Before his trial last year, Sarkozy had said he welcomed the hearing as a chance to “clear my name”.

“I am combative. I have no intention of being accused of things I haven’t done. I’m not corrupt and what has been inflicted on me is a scandal that will rest in the annals. The truth will out,” Sarkozy told BFMTV.

The former president is expected to appear in court later this month in yet another case, the “Bygmalion affair”, in which he is accused of overspending on his 2012 re-election bid.

He is also being investigated on allegations of influence-peddling and “laundering of crime or misdemeanour” related to consulting activities in Russia.

Sarkozy supporters have accused French judges of making the former president the target of an unfair and relentless legal crusade.

He is the first former president to appear in court on criminal charges. His predecessor Jacques Chirac was charged and convicted, receiving a two-year suspended sentence, over fake jobs at City Hall when he was mayor of Paris – but was spared taking the stand because of ill health.

At the end of his two-week trial last year, Sarkozy’s said: “This case has been for me the stations of the cross. But if that was the price to pay for the truth to come out, I am ready to accept it … I still have confidence in the justice of our country.”

Herzog was also convicted of breaching the rules of professional secrecy between him and his client. Herzog and Azibert have announced they will appeal against their conviction.

After the verdict, Damien Abad, the president of LR’s parliamentary group, tweeted: “Today I want to again express my friendship with President Nicolas Sarkozy. His life has been a succession of trials that he has never ceased to overcome with energy and courage. Once again he will prove this. I am certain of it.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Malaysia’s former prime minister Najib Razak was found guilty of corruption on Tuesday in the first trial linked to a multi-billion-dollar scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

The case has been widely seen as a test for Malaysia’s efforts to stamp out corruption and could have big political implications for the Southeast Asian nation.

“After considering all evidence in this trial, I find that the prosecution has successfully proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt,” Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge Mohamad Nazlan Mohamad Ghazali said.

Najib has said he would appeal any decision at the federal court and his lawyers sought a delay in sentencing. The corruption charges carry hefty fines and jail terms of up to 15 or 20 years, Reuters reported.

Najib faced seven charges of criminal breach of trust, money laundering and abuse of power for allegedly illegally receiving nearly $10 million from former 1MDB unit SRC International. He had pleaded not guilty.

That’s only a fraction of the money that Najib is alleged to have misappropriated from 1MDB. Prosecutors say more than $1 billion of 1MDB funds made its way into his personal accounts – over which he faces a total of 42 criminal charges.

US and Malaysian authorities say a total of $4.5 billion is believed to have been stolen from 1MDB, a fund Najib founded, and used across the world to buy art, a superyacht and fund the “Wolf of Wall Street” movie.

US officials have said the amount of money stolen “from the people of Malaysia is staggering”, with former US attorney-general Jeff Sessions describing the scandal as kleptocracy at its worst.

Allegations of corruption over 1MDB have hung over Najib for more than five years. But the criminal charges came only after his defeat in the 2018 election when his successor Mahathir Mohamad reopened investigations.

“The conviction sends a strong message that leaders will be held accountable for wrongdoings in office,” opposition lawmaker Charles Santiago said. “He can’t steal people’s money and expect to walk free.”

Najib, who was prime minister for nine years, had always maintained his innocence and had said the legal process was a way to clear his name.

His lawyers had argued that he was misled by Malaysian financier Jho Low and other 1MDB officials into believing that the funds banked into his accounts were donated by the Saudi royal family, rather than misappropriated from SRC as prosecutors have alleged. Low denies wrongdoing.

Judge Ghazali told the court it was “far fetched” to believe Najib could have been misled by Low.

Dozens of Najib supporters, gathered outside the courthouse for hours, called for the former premier to be freed and were seen offering prayers.

Najib himself appeared calm, albeit stony-faced.

Since losing the 2018 election, Najib has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity after embarking on an extensive public makeover, adopting a more personable tone to replace his image as a wealthy elite.

His party returned to power in February as part of an alliance led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

The guilty verdict could boost Muhyiddin’s credibility with the public, but create tensions within the coalition in which Najib’s UMNO party is the biggest component.

Sources have said if Najib is found guilty, there’s a real threat of his camp withdrawing support for the government, which has a razor-thin majority.

Leader Calls for All-Out Campaign against Corruption , Corrupt People

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

TEHRAN – Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Leader says the only way to tackle corruption is to deal with corrupt elements.

Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said on Saturday financial corruption is a dangerous disease.

“People become hopeful when they see unrestrained and unreserved fight against corrupt individuals because financial and economic corruption is very dangerous, contagious ad infectious like the coronavirus,” said the Leader.

He expressed satisfaction over the measures adopted by the Judiciary to combat corruption, saying, “Fight against corruption, which is at its height at this juncture, should be done without reservation and based on justice and law and without doing injustice and oppression to innocent people.”

“The movement to fight corruption, which may be witnessed now in the Judiciary during Mr. Raisi’s term, began during the time of Mr. Amoli Larijani. He had started this effort from both within and outside of the Judiciary.”

“A key point in fighting corruption is supervision and reporting by the public. Legal infrastructures should be built for this purpose so that the security of reporters is protected and they feel the Judiciary supports them. Nevertheless, baseless accusations should not be allowed.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader underlined that the coronavirus outbreak is not over yet, urging all officials and people to take health protocols seriously in order to prevent a resurgence of the disease.

He also underlined the need for an “overhaul” in action.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the enemy leaves no stone unturned through media campaigns and creating pessimism in public opinion to neutralize any attempt aimed at bringing about reforms and overhaul in the system.

He urged authorities not to remain inactive and to bravely continue on the path to bringing about overhaul in order to counter efforts against change.

Ayatollah Khamenei also said that enemies’ efforts to bring the Iranian nation to its knees are futile.

“If we do our duty, by God’s grace, the hostilities of the evil U.S. and the evil UK as well as the European governments’ measures aimed at “maximum pressure,” as they call it, will fail. This will result in the Iranian nation’s punch striking them and pushing them back,” said the Leader on Saturday while speaking in a video conference meeting with Judiciary officials on the occasion of the National Judiciary Week.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Fight against corruption will continue relentlessly, Judiciary chief Ebrahim Raisi said on Tuesday, noting that he will not allow anything to deflect attention from the war against corruption.

Speaking at a meeting with 40 principlist legislators, the top judge said, “Fight against corruption and countering the corrupt is a priority that would not be marginalized by any issue or event.”

Campaign against corruption will continue seriously by rectifying “corruptive structures”, Raisi remarked.

He further said that there is no difference between the capital Tehran with other cities or provinces regarding the anti-corruption measures. “The judiciary will fight against corruption wherever it exists.”

Raisi assumed office as the head of the judiciary in March. His efforts in campaign against corruption has been praised by figures with different political persuasions.

Earlier in a statement, Raisi called on all related officials to take every measure to ensure successful implementation of the move.

He said the Judiciary will make sure that the revenues generated from raising gasoline prices will be spent as planned.

The Judiciary chief also said the measure should not lead to further hike in commodity prices, urging the administration to make every effort to ease the impact of price rise on the people.

A watchdog group asked Israel’s top court on Sunday to order Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to step aside after his indictment on corruption charges, adding to pressure he is already facing from within his ruling party.

Netanyahu, a conservative premier, has denied charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust and said he will stay in office and defend himself, Iran News quotes what Reuters wrote.

His indictment on Thursday came amid unprecedented political disarray in Israel, after elections in April and September in which neither Netanyahu nor his main challenger, centrist Benny Gantz, secured an overriding majority in parliament.

In its petition to the Supreme Court, the watchdog group said the first-ever criminal charges against a sitting Israeli prime minister constituted “the crossing of a red line and a grave blow to public trust”.

The court should force Netanyahu to resign or temporarily recuse himself from prime ministerial duties, the movement said. It was not immediately clear when the court might rule on the petition.

Gantz’s mandate to form a cabinet – after an unsuccessful attempt by Netanyahu to do so – expired on Wednesday. The next day, Israel’s president declared a three-week period in which lawmakers can nominate one of their own to try to put together a ruling coalition.

Should that fail, a new election – Israel’s third in a year – will be triggered.

Netanyahu’s hope of securing that parliamentary nomination was challenged by Gideon Saar, a rival within his Likud party.

Saar said on Saturday that Netanyahu would not be able to win a third election and called on Likud to hold a leadership ballot.

There is only one way in which we can extricate Israel from the crisis and ensure the Likud’s continued rule – and that is if we go to snap primaries today, within these 21 days, Saar told Israel’s Channel 12 television.

Saar has previously said he would consider running for the top Likud slot.

Saar criticized the premier’s attempts to cast his criminal prosecution as a “coup attempt” involving police, prosecutors and the media.

“Not only is it wrong to say that, it’s also irresponsible to say that. It’s completely out of touch,” he said.

Opening the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, Netanyahu made no mention of the political crisis or his legal woes, speaking about Israeli security issues.
