TEHRAN (Iran News) – Governments across Europe ratcheted up restrictions Tuesday in an effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus as the continent recorded its highest weekly number of new infections since the start of the pandemic.

The World Health Organization said there were more than 700,000 new COVID-19 cases reported in Europe last week, a jump of 34% compared to the previous week, with Britain, France, Russia and Spain accounting for more than half of new infections recorded in the region, AP reported.

The increasing case numbers in Europe are partly the result of more testing, but the UN health agency noted that deaths were also up 16% in the region last week compared to the previous week. Doctors are also warning that while many new cases currently affect younger people, who tend to have milder symptoms, the median age could rise again, resulting in more serious illnesses in elderly populations.

Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte ordered bans on pickup sports games among friends and parties in closed spaces. Private gatherings at homes with more than six people who don’t live together are also discouraged.

Like other European countries, Italy is also limiting nightlife, with bars and restaurants having to close at midnight, and drinking while standing at a bar banned after 9 p.m.

Italy made wearing masks mandatory outdoors last week, a requirement already in place in Spain, Turkey, India and a handful of other Asian countries. Elsewhere in Europe, such mandates are in effect in hot spot cities like Paris, Brussels and Pristina, Kosovo, and are being introduced in several German cities.

Even with virus infections rising again, governments are eager to avoid the total lockdowns they imposed back then that caused huge economic damage and job losses. Wary of hurting already fragile economies, European governments have instead relied on a patchwork of regional restrictions that have sometimes caused confusion and frustration by those affected.

Still, the UN health agency cautioned Tuesday against a one-size-fits-all mindset when it comes to restrictive measures. WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told reporters in Geneva that lockdowns should be a “last resort.”

Chancellor Angela Merkel has summoned the governors of Germany’s 16 states to meet in person Wednesday for the first time since mid-June. Bavarian governor Markus Soeder called for “a really clear set of rules for everyone in the coming weeks” to prevent the situation spinning out of control.

In an effort to avoid to keep people and goods moving throughout the European Union, member countries approved a traffic light system Tuesday.

The countries agreed to not restrict people traveling between so-called green areas — where virus infection numbers are low — but EU governments will continue to set their own restrictions, such as quarantines or mandatory testing upon arrival, for people coming from orange or red zones.

Under the criteria adopted Tuesday, most of EU regions would be either red or orange.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran extended restrictions in the capital for another week in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus, which has killed more than 28,000 people in the country.

Tehran’s Governor General Anoushiravan Mohseni-Bandpey said on Friday that the restrictions imposed in the capital have been extended to October 16.

Mohseni-Bandpey added that wearing mask will be mandatory in the capital from Saturday, ISNA reported.

After declining for weeks, the deaths and infections have been on the rise in Iran since the beginning of September.

The worsening situation caused authorities to reimpose restrictive measures in Tehran Province from October 3.

Under the new set of restrictions, universities, boarding schools, seminaries, language schools, vocational schools, educational institutions, libraries, mosques, museums, theaters, zoos, theme parks, aqua parks, swimming pools, banquet halls, wedding venues, coffee shops, teahouses and hair salons must shut down from all days of the week.

The restrictions are largely the same as those taken earlier during the pandemic by Iran, which has so far stopped short of imposing a full lockdown.

They had been progressively eased from April to avoid deepening an economic crisis precipitated by the reimposition of heavy sanctions by the United States in 2018.

According to the Health Ministry, Iran registered 4,142 new coronavirus cases from Thursday to Friday, with the total number of identified cases in the worst-hit country in the West Asia rising to 492,378.

Of the new cases detected since Thursday, 1,787 patients have been admitted to the hospitals across the country, ministry’s spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 4,392 coronavirus patients have critical health conditions, Lari noted.

At least 401,379 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across Iran, the spokeswoman said.

She added that 210 patients died from Thursday to Friday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 28,098.

On Wednesday, Iran hit its highest number of daily deaths from the coronavirus, with 239 new fatalities.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani said some restrictions might be reinstated in the country as the Health Ministry reported the highest single-day death toll in nearly two months.

Addressing the National Headquarters for Managing and Fighting the Coronavirus on Thursday, President Rouhani said if the people’s non-compliance with the health protocols leads to the resurgence of the coronavirus in the country, we will have to reinstate some restrictions in the country, according to the president’s official website.

Despite the health sector’s preparedness for the resurgence of the coronavirus in the country, president Rouhani pointed to the people’s key role in the fight against the disease.

Iran’s health officials have voiced alarm over a surge in infections, urging the nation to respect health protocols to control the spread of the disease.

New figures

Iran’s death toll from the novel coronavirus rose by 207 to 25,222 from Thursday to Friday, according to the Health Ministry. It was the highest single-day death toll since the ministry registered 216 deaths on August 1.

The ministry’s spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said on Friday that 3,563 new cases were identified during the same period, bringing the total number of positive cases to 439,882 in the country, the hardest-hit by the pandemic in the West Asia.

Of the new cases detected, 1,708 patients have been admitted to the hospital, Lari added.

At least 369,842 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across Iran, the spokeswoman said.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 4,023 coronavirus patients have critical health conditions, Lari said.

She also said more than 3,879,000 coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in Iran so far.

Since the virus outbreak in the country in February, Iran has been trying to produce a vaccine to treat coronavirus patients.

Vaccine production

On Friday, Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali Iran and Russia’s sovereign wealth fund are discussing the joint production of a vaccine against COVID-19, Reuters reported.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has said it is in talks with a number of countries about the possibility of producing the Russian ‘Sputnik-V’ vaccine abroad, and has signed a deal to manufacture 300 million doses in India.

“We are holding talks, I spoke with the head of RDIF Kirill Dmitriev, our officials have held several rounds of consultations and we announced that we will co-operate,” Jalali said.

“We announced that we will cooperate in two-three areas. That includes joint production with Russia. Iran has great potential to produce the vaccine,” Jalali was quoted as saying by Russian media.

Iran’s Health Minister Saeid Namaki said in late June that an Iranian version of COVID-19 vaccine had shown promise in tests on animals.

International race to develop a safe and effective vaccine for COVID-19 has accelerated in recent months.

In August, Russia became the first country in the world to grant regulatory approval for a COVID-19 vaccine.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Health Ministry said on Friday a series of restrictions will be reintroduced as of Saturday in Tehran for a week amid a resurgence of coronavirus infections.

A senior Health Ministry official in Tehran, Mohsen Farhadi told IRNA that the new restrictions target four types of businesses and are aimed at curbing the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

Farhadi said wedding and conference halls are banned from holding ceremonies and gatherings, and gyms where sports such as wrestling, judo, taekwondo, and the like, where high physical contact between athletes is practiced, must shut down.

He added that coffee shops and tea houses, as well as aqua parks, amusement parks, and zoos will remain closed during this period.

Iran has been battling a resurgence of COVID-19, with official figures showing a rise in both new infections and deaths since a two-month low in May.

The Health Ministry on Friday raised the overall virus toll to more than 13,790 deaths, with 183 new fatalities, and over 269,400 confirmed cases.

Iran has refrained from imposing a full lockdown but closed schools and canceled public gatherings. It banned travel between provinces in March but lifted the order the following month.

The rising toll has prompted authorities to make masks mandatory in enclosed public spaces and allow worst-hit provinces to reimpose restrictions.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Hassan Rouhani said government offices across Iran will not offer any service to people refusing to wear a face mask as of July 5 as part of strict regulations to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

In comments at a Saturday meeting of the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters, Rouhani said wearing a face mask in all public places will be obligatory as of tomorrow.

People without masks will not receive services at government offices and institutions, he noted, adding that government employees will also be barred from entering offices if they refuse to wear a mask or observe the health regulations.

The president also emphasized that hiding the coronavirus infection is a violation of the rights of others, saying anybody aware of contracting COVID-19 is duty-bound to inform others on humanitarian and religious grounds.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rouhani praised the Health Ministry and all Iranian medical staff for their great job in making efforts to tackle the pandemic.

The death toll from the novel coronavirus and the number of new cases of infection in Iran has risen sharply in recent weeks after the reopening of businesses and public places.

The death toll from COVID-19 in Iran has exceeded 11,200 and the total number of coronavirus cases has reached 235,429.

An official from the Iranian Judiciary said in March that according to the country’s regulations, making any threat to public health is a crime, and those aware of being infected with coronavirus and hiding it will be jailed for at least one year.
