TEHRAN (Iran News) – Every day we face some news and reports regarding the COVID-19 vaccines that Iranian officials are to import or the related bodies are working on producing the domestic-made vaccine and the controversy on the issue is on the rise.

One should know that COVID-19 is a modern day disaster which has rattled the world and it has killed more than 3 million people worldwide and damaged economies, and most countries especially the rich ones are investing in producing vaccines and so far some companies have been able to send their vaccines into the markets and other ones are in the lines but no one is sure of their one hundred person effectiveness.

American, European, Chinese and Russian made COVID-19 vaccines have rolled into the market but they have faced different reactions from the world. Of course, politicizing the matter has worsened the case as some countries have taken offensive stand against Russian and Chinese made vaccines and also some have taken the same stand against the American and European made ones.

In Iran since the first day when manufacture of different types of vaccines was announced, the reactions were the same and some jumped to defense of domestic made vaccines, some backed European and American ones and others defended Chinese and Russian made vaccines. Unfortunately the issue has been politicized and it has led to some disputes even among the related health bodies in the country.

After outstanding efforts by the health officials in the country to contain the wave of the pandemic in the first three peaks, the number of infected people and even the death toll of COVID-19 in the country fell sharply. Some lockdown measures and observing the sanitary protocols like social distancing, wearing face mask and washing hands were essential in the fall in the number of the infected.

But a carelessness and indifference both by the public and the officials triggered another wave in surge in the number of the infected, and the daily death number once again became 3-digit and officials sounded warning about the future and they again started the blame game.

Regarding the return of the fourth peak of the virus and the rise in the number of the casualties, unfortunately officials have started to criticize each other for their inefficiency and every organ tries to acquit itself and put the blame on the others but the truth is that all of us should be blamed: people for their not observing the sanitary protocols and officials for their lax attitude and not imposing appropriate lockdown measures for the New Year holidays and not providing vaccines till the domestic-made vaccines are rolled into the market.

As most of domestic and foreign experts believe and say, vaccine is crucial but it is not by itself enough for not contracting the virus. The effectiveness of the vaccines vary but they help people to be immune against the severe disease and even those who are vaccinated may contract the virus but slightly.

Almost all experts have reiterated that people should observe sanitary protocols even after vaccination in order to curb this deadly virus. No matter which type of vaccine is used, all of them just would slow down the pace of the virus and observing the health protocols are more crucial.

Hopefully, Iranian-made COVID-19 vaccines are to come into the market by July and officials are trying to import other types of vaccines to help the public, and some people are better to stop politicizing the issue of the vaccine for the sake of lives of the nation.

In such conditions, people and officials should remain united and work together to overcome the problems rather than blaming each other. So far over 66,000 people have lost their lives in the country and we should not let the number increase through sticking to unity and observing the health protocols because vaccine is not the only solution and it will take time all of the people to be vaccinated in the country. Officials should not waste the time by emphasizing the domestic or foreign made vaccines and they should use whichever is effective and useful no matter what politically biased people say.

By the way, health officials and the national anti-Coronavirus headquarters should do their best to provide vaccines for the people either the domestic or foreign ones because the winner of this effort will both the government and the nation and in case of defeat, all together will be losers and blaming each other is vain.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –a leading scientist says COVID Risks Will ‘Never Be Zero’ as England’s Lockdown Eased. England’s lockdown easing could lead to a rise in COVID-19 cases but there will “never be zero risk” from catching the disease — regardless of what restrictions are in place, a leading scientist said.

Dr Mike Tildesley, reader in infectious disease modelling at the University of Warwick and a member of the government’s Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling said Britons should manage the risks by continuing to follow social distancing guidelines and wearing face masks, The Independent reported.

His comments came as England’s COVID rules were significantly relaxed on Monday to allow non-essential shops to reopen, with pubs and restaurants serving people outside.

Crowds have been flocking back to the high street to shop, while some braved the early morning cold for a drink following months of social isolation. Hairdressers, barbers, beauty salons and gyms have also reopened.

There are fears that loosening the rules could lead to a spike in new infections. When asked if lockdown easing could result in a resurgence of the virus, Dr Tildesley told Times Radio it was “hard to tell” what effect the changes might have, but warned more mixing “could lead to higher risk”.

“All the signs are pretty good at the moment – cases have been going down for many weeks now, we’re seeing hospital admissions and deaths go down to very low numbers, and we really hope that continue,” he said.

“It is great news that people can get out and go to non-essential shops and go to pubs and restaurants and so forth. But of course, follow the guidelines that are still in place,” he added.

He added, “We should never say there can’t be any transmission if we follow those rules, what we’re doing is we’re trying to minimise the risk of transmission as much as possible.”

“By taking these precautions there is never going to be zero risk, there’s always the possibility that even with those precautions you could get infected but you’re minimising your own risk of being infected and also potentially passing the virus on,” he said.

Dr Tildesley said “we’re not there yet” in terms of socialising indoors – which carries a higher risk of transmission.

Meanwhile, David King, former chief scientific adviser to the government, raised concerns about a third wave of infections in Chile — despite a significant proportion of the country has had a vaccine.

Asked about the easing of lockdown restrictions in England, he told Sky News, “From the point of view of the population itself, we’re all dying to get out of lockdown.”

“From the point of view of the epidemic, I think it’s all a little bit more worrying,” he said.

He added, “Chile is a country where the rate of vaccination amongst the population was third highest in the world – they were ahead of us in terms of the number of people who have had the vaccine – and they’re suddenly now into a third wave.”

“They now have 7,600 cases a day and the total number of people in Chile now who have COVID-19 is over a million,” he said.

“So what has happened in Chile is very, very surprising – a high percentage of people have been vaccinated, but here’s a variant of the disease coming through the country,” he added.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Britain must be braced for widespread riots this summer, a government adviser said, warning poorer people and areas will be hit harder by the coronavirus fallout.

“serious public disorder” on the scale of the 2011 riots – particularly if curbs on freedoms have to be reimposed.

Professor Clifford Stott predicted a tinderbox from a combination of inequality, anger at the police, enforcement of restrictions becoming “pretty impossible” and lingering anger over the Dominic Cummings affair.

Trouble would escalate if “localized lockdowns” brought tougher rules for people living in poorer areas than in affluent neighborhoods, the member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) said, The Independent reported.

“If the police don’t invest in building positive police-community relations now, there is a potential for serious and large public disorder to emerge this summer,” Prof Stott warned.

“I think in the worst-case scenario it’s not inconceivable that we could have disorder on a scale equivalent to August 2011.

“There are important issues about inequality that could, if not dealt with properly, feed into a situation in the future over the summer months where confrontations develop.”

Prof Stott described the idea of local lockdowns as “very, very problematic”, days after mayors in the northwest – the region where they are thought most likely – called them unenforceable.

And he warned enforcing existing restrictions was already “pretty impossible now to a large extent”, after the Black Lives Matter protests were allowed to go ahead despite a supposed ban on marches.

Warning the police would feel pressure to crack down on gatherings on housing estates, the scientific adviser said: “I think that could create a circumstance when lots of young men feel it’s unfair about what’s happening to them.

“And where the police try to enforce that unfairness, it could create a breakdown in social cohesion, lead to a sense of unfairness in policing. We know that those factors are often drivers for social conflict.”

And, on Johnson’s aide’s lockdown-breach, he added: “The loss of trust and confidence that has been brought about by the Cummings affair has not assisted in maintaining that adherence, I think that’s quite clear.”

In August 2011, riots swept England – and five people died – in protests sparked by the fatal police shooting of Mark Duggan in north London.

In the following days, the disturbances spread to Birmingham, Bristol, Coventry, Derby, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, West Bromwich, and Wolverhampton.

Calling on the authorities to be ready, Prof Stott told the PA news agency: “What we need to do is to make sure we start addressing the underlying causes now so that the conditions that led to the 2011 riots are not in place should we get a precipitating incident.

“Put simply, the most effective thing that the police can do is put bobbies on the beat.”
