TEHRAN (Iran News) – COVID-19 prevalence on a downward trend. The spread of coronavirus is slowing down in Iran, as the daily toll has fallen to 115, the lowest figure since April.

Alireza Raeisi, the spokesman for the National Headquarters for Coronavirus Control, said that currently, 13 cities in the country are at high-risk red zones, 12 of which are in the southern provinces.

Except for southern Hormozgan and Sistan-Baluchestan provinces, all the provinces are experiencing a downward trend in the prevalence of the pandemic, he added, IRNA reported on Saturday.

Over 360,000 passengers tested at borders

Some 360,824 passengers have so far been screened for coronavirus by thermal tests at the country’s official borders since March 10, Mehdi Valipour, head of Relief and Rescue Organization affiliated to the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), has stated.

During the aforesaid period, IRCS forces have screened 360,824 passengers for COVID-19, 24,581 of whom with symptoms underwent PCR and 51,298 rapid tests, he said, IRNA reported.

He went on to lament that some 64 individuals, who tested positive, have so far been temporarily quarantined, under a plan to rapidly identify suspected cases of coronavirus and prevent the spread of new UK strain.

Some 431 members of the IRCS cooperate for carrying out the plan in 16 provinces across the country, Valipour concluded.

With the cooperation of ministries of health and transport, a plan is being implemented with the goal of rapidly identifying and testing incoming passengers and keeping them in quarantine facilities, if necessary.

Thirty border checkpoints have been selected, including 18 land borders, nine air borders, and three sea borders, all incoming passengers will be tested and referred to the quarantine facilities in case of necessity.

Around 8,000 individuals enter the country via borders on a daily basis.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Thousands travelled across the country despite testing positive as fines also fail to deter Iranians during the new year holidays.

Two of Iran’s 32 provinces – Alborz, close to capital Tehran, and Ilam to the west of the country – have been confirmed by the country’s health ministry to be facing a fourth wave. Seven more, including Tehran, are on the verge, it said.

“If we don’t have the necessary considerations, we might face this wave in other provinces as well. So we need to be careful,” President Hassan Rouhani said during a televised session of the national anti-coronavirus task force on Saturday.

Iran has reported more than 1.9 million coronavirus cases since it announced its first in February last year. About 63,000 people have died in what is the worst COVID-19 death toll in the region.

The resurgence in the cases, which health officials say will soon be accompanied by a spike in hospitalisations and deaths, comes two weeks after Nowruz, the Iranian new year, on March 20.

Even as health officials said they opposed travels this year, people were officially allowed to visit hundreds of cities across the country that were not classified as “red” or “orange” on a colour-coded scale denoting the severity of outbreaks.

Alireza Raeisi, a spokesman of the national anti-coronavirus task force, said on Saturday that road travel during Nowruz experienced a 100 percent increase compared with last year.

Shortly before Nowruz, Roads Minister Mohammad Eslami predicted that a whopping 33 million people will travel during the holidays, with at least 7.8 million people using public transport to move around the country.

According to the health ministry, at least 15,000 people who knew they were infected with COVID-19 after testing positive at registered labs, travelled during Nowruz.

Official figures also show 47 cities are now classified “red” while 126 have been bumped to “orange”.

A further 247 are “yellow” while only 14 are classified as “blue”, experiencing the lowest transmission rates.

Iran, has administered about 161,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines to people in vulnerable groups, as per the latest figure announced by officials last week.

Iran expects more doses from Russia, China, and India, while three local vaccine candidates are undergoing human trials and are expected to head for mass production in the next few months.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – White House aide Nick Luna, who serves as a personal attendant to US President Donald Trump, has tested positive for coronavirus infection, according to people familiar with the matter.

Luna’s diagnosis emerged a little more than 24 hours after Trump entered the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for treatment of Covid-19 following his own infection, Bloomberg reported.

Known as one of Trump’s so-called body men, Luna is the latest member of Trump’s inner circle of White House personnel to contract coronavirus. Hope Hicks, one of the president’s closest advisers, fell ill on Wednesday while traveling with Trump to Minnesota.

Luna, who runs Oval Office operations for the White House, accompanied Trump on his trip to Cleveland for the presidential debate on Tuesday and was also aboard Air Force One on the Minnesota trip when Hicks first began experiencing symptoms.

Luna was one of the aides who had planned to accompany Trump on Thursday to a fundraiser at the president’s golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey, but stayed behind because of recent close contact with Hicks.

The White House press office had no immediate comment.

Earlier this year, Nick Luna married Cassidy Dumbauld, an assistant to White House senior adviser and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.

In his job as a body man, Luna travels closely with the president, holding papers and helping keep Trump’s schedule.

In addition to Luna and Hicks, the president’s re-election campaign manager Bill Stepien, 2016 campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, and a number of prominent Republican lawmakers and officials have tested positive since Thursday.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – While some people who contract COVID-19 infections never experience any symptoms, there remains disagreement about what proportion of total infections these cases represent.

A new study published in the open-access journal PLOS Medicine by Diana Buitrago-Garcia at the University of Bern, Switzerland and colleagues suggests that true asymptomatic cases of SARS-CoV-2 comprise a minority of infections, medicalxpress.com reported.

The full spectrum and distribution of the severity of COVID-19 symptoms are not well understood. Some infected people may experience severe infections resulting in viral pneumonia, respiratory distress syndrome, and death, while others remain completely asymptomatic or develop mild, nonspecific symptoms.

To better understand the proportion of people who become infected with SARS-CoV-2 and never develop any symptoms, as well as the proportion of people who are asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis but develop symptoms later, researchers systematically reviewed literature using a database of SARS-CoV-2 evidence between March and June, 2020. The authors then analyzed 79 studies reporting empirical data on 6,616 people, 1,287 of whom were defined as asymptomatic, in order to determine the proportion of infected people who never developed symptoms. While the study was limited by its inability to ascertain the impact of false negatives, the researchers were able to estimate that 20 of COVID-19 infections remained asymptomatic during follow-up.

Accurate estimations of true asymptomatic and presymptomatic infections are critical to understanding SARS-CoV-2 transmission at the population level and for populations to adopt appropriately tailored public health strategies. Future research should include prospective longitudinal studies that document symptom status. Improved accuracy of serological tests is also needed to reduce the number of false negatives. Since each person infected with SARS-CoV-2 is initially asymptomatic, the proportion that will go on to develop symptoms is estimated to be around 80 percent, suggesting that presymptomatic transmission may significantly contribute to overall SARS CoV-2 epidemics.

According to the authors, “The findings of this systematic review of publications early in the pandemic suggests that most SARS-CoV-2 infections are not asymptomatic throughout the course of infection.

The contribution of presymptomatic and asymptomatic infections to overall SARS-CoV-2 transmission means that combination prevention measures, with enhanced hand and respiratory hygiene, testing and tracing, and isolation strategies and social distancing, will continue to be needed.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A rapid test can accurately diagnose a coronavirus infection within 90 minutes without needing a specialist laboratory, said scientists.

The study by Imperial College London showed the “lab-on-a-chip” gave comparable results to current tests, BBC reported.

The device is already being used in eight National Health Service (NHS) hospitals to quickly identify patients who are carrying the virus.

However, experts warn that the kit will not be a solution to the beleaguered Test and Trace program.

The device, developed by the company DnaNudge, can be used by anyone capable of taking a swab of the nose or throat.

The swab is placed inside a disposable blue cartridge which contains the chemicals needed for the test.

This in turn is slotted into a shoebox-sized machine to perform the analysis.

The study, published in the Lancet Microbe, compared results when samples from 386 people were given both the DnaNudge and standard laboratory tests.

“The performance was comparable, which is very reassuring when you’re trying to bring in a new technology,” said Professor Graham Cooke, from Imperial College London.

“Many tests involve a trade-off between speed and accuracy, but this test manages to achieve both.”

If the lab tests said the patient was free of the virus, so did the rapid test. If the lab tests said the patient had the virus, the rapid test agreed 94 percent of the time.

The UK has already ordered 5,000 of the Nudgebox machines and 5.8 million of the disposable cartridges.

However, there is a major drawback as each box can handle only one test at a time. So during a day, one box could perform around 16 tests.

Cooke said: “They are useful in clinical settings when you are trying to make a rapid decision.”

He described a patient last week who was rapidly identified as having COVID-19 and started on the drugs dexamethasone and remdesivir.

The tests could become even more useful for hospitals in the future as it is theoretically possible to test for coronavirus, flu and respiratory syncytial virus (a major reason young children are admitted to hospital) at the same time.

However, the capacity issue means the test cannot solve the problems with NHS Test and Trace or help with Operation Moonshot and the plans for 10 million tests per day.

Testing 60,000 people at a stadium ahead of a football match would require 60,000 boxes, but it may be useful at smaller venues.

Professor Lawrence Young, who was not part of the research and from the University of Warwick, said the technology was “innovative”.

He added: “The COVID Nudge test could have an important role where near-patient, real-time decision-making is necessary, such as screening patients for admission to hospital or for surgery.

“[However,] this is not the answer to universal mass testing.”
