“The injection of a third dose of mRNA vaccine is necessary for severely immunocompromised people,” the Directorate General of Health (DGS) said in a note sent out to health professionals on Sunday, BFMTV reported.

This includes people who have undergone organ transplants or recent bone marrow transplants, as well as dialysis patients and those with autoimmune diseases who are under strong immunosuppressive treatments.

The third dose must be administered four weeks after the second, or “as soon as possible” for people who have already exceeded this period, the DGS added.

Cancer patients, people with chronic kidney disease who aren’t on dialysis, and patients with autoimmune diseases who don’t take Anti-CD20 or antimetabolite drugs are not included in the new advisory, the DGS said.

The agency also added it would make further vaccine recommendations.

The DGS’s decision is in response to an opinion published on April 6 by the government’s vaccine advisory council, which recommended a third dose for immunocompromised people.

Last month, a US study of 436 organ transplant recipients who took either the Moderna or Pfizer jabs showed that just 17% developed neutralizing antibodies within 20 days of vaccination.

The research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that immunocompromised people’s immune response contrasts to the nearly 100% antibody development among the general population by the 20th day after vaccination.

Nearly 30,000 people with COVID-19 were hospitalized, after 551 new admissions were reported in the past 24 hours, the biggest one-day increase in a week, Xinhua reported.

The number of critically-ill patients who required intensive care increased by 92 to 5,433, exceeding the country’s original capacity of 5,100 resuscitation beds.

Deaths caused by the respiratory disease rose to 96,847, up by 197 in a single day compared with 185 on Sunday. The cumulative number of infections went over 4.8 million, with further 10,793 people tested positive within a day.

“We are already at 5,400 patients in intensive care and we know that in the coming weeks, whatever happens, the number of patients in intensive care will continue to increase automatically,” Health Minister Olivier Veran told TF1 television earlier in the day.

Veran warned that in France “the epidemic situation remains tense” and expected the third coronavirus wave would reach its peak “this week”.

France, which relies on faster vaccines rollout to contain the virus spread, would receive 12 million additional doses this month, giving the government’s vaccination plan a shot in the arm.

The objective of inoculating 10 million people by mid-April would be met and “even anticipated by few days”, the minister said.

Starting from mid-April people aged over 60 in France will be able to get vaccinated, from May 15 the vaccination will be open to people aged between 50 and 60 and from mid-June the age limit will be lifted.

Since the start of the vaccination campaign, over 9.35 million people, or 17.8 percent of the adult population, have received at least one shot and more than 3.14 million have got two injections, the Health Ministry said on Monday.

This weekend, France went into one-month confinement to cope with the third wave of the epidemic. People’s movement is limited to a radius of 10 kilometers from home and inter-cities travels are banned.

Schools are closed for three to four weeks and non-essential shops shut down. Catering businesses and culture venues, forced to suspend their activities since late October 2020, remained closed.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A second wave of the coronavirus pandemic could hit France in November, a government adviser told local media on Wednesday, as the city of Marseille tightened restrictions to fight the outbreak.

Authorities in Marseille said late on Tuesday that bars and restaurants would have shorter opening times, and they also broadened mandatory mask-wearing in the southern port city between Aug. 26 and Sept. 30, Reuters reported.

“There are fears of a second wave of coronavirus in November,” Professor Jean-Francois Delfraissy, who heads the scientific council that advises the government on the pandemic, told France 2 television on Wednesday.

France has the seventh-highest COVID-19 death toll in the world, and the government is monitoring the figures closely to see if fresh restrictions or lockdown are needed.

Under the new measures, Marseille’s bars and restaurants will have to close from between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. local time (2100-0400 GMT), having previously been able to stay open until normal closing time at midnight or 1 a.m.

Mandatory mask-wearing will now be compulsory outdoors in public spaces in all districts of the city, having previously only been compulsory in some areas.

The French health ministry reported 3,304 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, well below daily highs seen last week, though greater numbers of young adults are testing positive.

The number of deaths in France from COVID-19 stands at 30,544 deaths, including 16 in the past 24 hours.
