TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s death toll from the coronavirus passed 30,000 after the Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari reported 253 new fatalities from Friday to Saturday.

The announcement saw Iran put its total death toll from the outbreak at 30,123.

The number of people tested positive for COVID-19 infection rose to 526,490 following the detection of 4,103 new cases since Friday, the spokeswoman added.

She also noted that at least 423,921 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across the country.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 4,721 patients have critical health conditions, Lari noted.

Iran has been struggling with the coronavirus since announcing its first cases in February.

In recent weeks, Iran has seen daily death tolls spike to their highest-ever levels.

Restrictions

On Wednesday, Iranian officials announced a travel ban to and from five major cities, including the capital of Tehran and the holy city of Mashhad, that they said aimed to contain the virus’ spread.

The coronavirus has also spread to some of the highest levels of Iran’s government. Among those recently infected is the head of the country’s atomic energy organization, while Iran’s vice president in charge of budget and planning tested positive on Sunday.

This week, as the daily recorded death toll hit the record for three times, authorities announced tighter restrictions for the hard-hit capital of Tehran.

Recently reopened universities and schools, as well as libraries, mosques, cinemas, museums and beauty salons, shut down. In the past week, the government mandated that all Tehran residents wear face masks outdoors and in public places, warning violators would be fined. Officials promised those who tested positive would be closely tracked.

Authorities on Saturday extended the restrictions imposed in the capital for the second time to limit the spread of the virus.

Governor General of Tehran Province Anoushiravan Mohseni-Bandpey said that the restrictions have been extended for the province to October 22.

Movement restrictions this spring somewhat checked the spread of the disease. Then the government swiftly reopened the country, desperate to boost its stricken economy. Since June, the case count has steadily increased – and spiked to new heights in recent weeks.

US sanctions

As Iran approaches winter, the seasonal influenza could be an added and serious issue for the country, as it has had purchasing the flu vaccine amid new American sanctions on Iranian banks.

Iran’s Red Crescent Society said in a tweet on Tuesday that they were in charge of importing two million flu vaccine doses into the country, but that new US sanctions prevented the import.

IRNA, Tasnim News Agency and AP contributed to this story.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Stock markets in Asia suffered on Tuesday from the fallout from UK and US investors worried about a rise in coronavirus cases.

The biggest falls in the region were recorded in Australia, where shares hit a three-month low, BBC reported.

Investors have also been rattled by dimming hopes for more financial support for the US economy.

Stock markets of Asia fell across South Korea, Hong Kong and China, while Japan was closed for a public holiday.

On Monday, UK and US stock markets suffered heavy losses over fears that a renewed rise in coronavirus cases will blight economic prospects.

More than £50 was wiped off UK shares, and caused similar falls across European and US stock markets.

The negative sentiment spread into Asia, which has previously been the focus of optimism from China’s continued economic recovery.

Australian shares were dragged to their lowest level since mid-June, under pressure by its mining and energy stocks.

Major mining firms BHP Group and Rio Tinto both fell around 2%.

Multiple tensions

“The biggest issue for local markets is how the battle for tech sector super dominance plays out between the US and China, which is getting viewed through the lens of the ByteDance /Oracle -Walmart deal,” said Stephen Innes, a market strategist at Sydney-based financial firm AxiCorp.

“Election risk is also coming to the fore with the first US election debate on the 29th, which is compounding things,” he added.

In Europe, banking shares were affected by an extra set of concerns as allegations of money-laundering surfaced in leaked files.

HSBC, the bank at the center of the scandal, saw its share price fall 5.3% in London, but the revelations dragged down the entire sector, with other big banks dropping by a similar amount.

HSBC’s shares have hit a 25-year low and they continued to slide in Hong Kong on Tuesday falling another 3%.

Shares in UK-based bank Standard Chartered, which was also named in the leaked papers, fell 2% to hit an 18-year low on the Hong Kong market.

India on Saturday also reported another 1,201 deaths, taking total fatalities to 77,472.

Infections are growing faster in India than anywhere else in the world and it is the second worst-hit country behind the United States. Experts say India’s limited and restrictive testing has masked the actual toll even as daily tests have been ramped up to more than 1 million.

The Health Ministry said that over three-fourth of reported COVID-19 cases had either recovered or been discharged. The country’s recovery rate was at 77.7 percent.

“The gap between the percentage of recovered cases and active cases is progressively growing wide,” the ministry said, AP reported.

Meanwhile, cases in the western state of Maharashtra, home to financial capital Mumbai, have passed 1 million as the virus continues to surge unabated through its rural and urban areas.

Maharashtra is the worst affected state with more than 28,000 COVID-19 fatalities. Nowhere has been the virus more deadly than in Maharashtra, where it has killed 2.8 percent of those with confirmed infections, well above the national mortality rate of nearly 1.7 percent.

The pandemic has been economically devastating for India. Its economy contracted nearly 24 percent in the second quarter, the worst among the world’s top economies.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Health Ministry reported 2,152 new coronavirus cases from Sunday to Monday, the highest daily infections in 10 days, bringing the total number of infections to 388,810.

Iran’s Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said on Monday that the death toll from the novel coronavirus rose by 117 to 22,410,

She said that at least 335,572 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across the country.

Among those undergoing treatment in medical centers at present, 3,733 patients have critical health conditions because of more severe infection, Lari noted.

She also noted that more than 3,406,000 coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in Iran so far.

Since late February, Iran has been struggling to contain the country’s COVID-19 outbreak, the deadliest in West Asia.

Iran closed schools, canceled public events and banned intercity travel in March. The government, however, began to progressively lift restrictions in April to gradually reopen its sanctions-hit economy.

On Saturday, Iran opened the new school year after nearly seven months of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday that education will not be closed in the country even under the worst situation.

Education and health are equally important to society, he said, but added that parents would not be forced to send their children back to school.

Several medical professionals have voiced concern over the reopening of schools and universities in Iran.

However, Iran’s Education Minister Mohsen Haji-Mirzaei defended the government’s decision to reopen schools, saying that there is no alternative to face-to-face education.

He said that face-to-face education is better than other types of education in terms of quality.

Haji-Mirzaei noted that a hiatus in education will pose a psychological risk to students and society in the future.

Tasnim and Reuters contributed to this story.
