TEHRAN (Iran News) – Kissinger warns of US-China ‘cold war’ with global repercussions . Former US national security adviser Henry Kissinger has warned that persisting tensions between Washington and Beijing pose “the biggest problem” for the world and will lead to a “cold war” if the two economic powers fail to mend ties.

“It’s the biggest problem for America; it’s the biggest problem for the world. Because if we can’t solve that, then the risk is that all over the world a kind of cold war will develop between China and the United States.” Kissinger said Friday at the McCain Institute’s Sedona Forum on global issues.

The 97-year-old veteran diplomat further insisted that US-China tensions threaten to engulf the entire globe and could lead to an Armageddon-like clash between the two military and technology powerhouses, urging US foreign policy elites to stand united in their approach to the China challenge.

He also expressed concerns that while nuclear weapons were already large enough to damage the entire globe during the cold war, advances in nuclear technology and artificial intelligence – where China and the US are top rivals – have multiplied the doomsday threat.

“For the first time in human history, humanity has the capacity to extinguish itself in a finite period of time,” Kissinger underlined. “We have developed the technology of a power that is beyond what anybody imagined even 70 years ago.”

“And now, to the nuclear issue is added the hi-tech issue, which in the field of artificial intelligence, in its essence is based on the fact that man becomes a partner of machines and that machines can develop their own judgment,” he then emphasized. “So in a military conflict between hi-tech powers, it’s of colossal significance.”

According to Kissinger, the cold war between the US and the Soviet Union during the decades after the World War II was more one-dimensional, focused on nuclear weapons competition.

“The Soviet Union had no economic capacity. They had military technological capacity,” he observed. “(They) didn’t have developmental technological capacity as China does. China is a huge economic power in addition to being a significant military power.”

Kissinger then went on to point out that US policy toward China must take a two-pronged approach: standing firm on US principles to demand China’s respect, while maintaining a constant dialogue and finding areas of cooperation.

“I’m not saying that diplomacy will always lead to beneficial results,” the foreign policy strategist added. “This is the complex task we have … Nobody has succeeded in doing it completely,” he said.

Pompeo on Tuesday visited Japan and called for deeper cooperation with Australia, India and Japan to counter China’s growing regional influence.

“Pompeo has repeatedly fabricated lies about China and maliciously created political confrontation,“ the Chinese embassy in Japan said in a statement, Reuters reported.

“We once again urge the US to abandon its Cold War mentality and ideological prejudice, stop unprovoked accusations and attacks against China and treat relations with China in a constructive manner,“ the embassy said.

Pompeo’s East Asia visit, his first in more than a year, coincides with worsening tensions with China.

The United States and China, the world’s top two economies, are at loggerheads over a wide range of issues from Beijing’s handling of the coronavirus to its imposition of a new security law in Hong Kong and ambitions in the South China Sea.

Pompeo’s call for the Quad nations of the United States, Japan, India and Australia to form a united front against China’s growing influence is a sensitive subject for its regional allies, which are reliant on China for trade.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Russian president’s press secretary in Kremlin said on Monday the recent close contacts between Russia and US leaders, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, on issues of the oil market stabilization cannot be interpreted as a sign of a thaw in the relations between the two powers.

“Can this situation be projected onto the general background of bilateral Russian-US relations? Such a conclusion is improbable today,” Dmitry Peskov told reporters when asked whether he thought the recent contacts between the two presidents could inspire hope for the improvement in bilateral relations, TASS reported.

According to the Kremlin spokesman, the Russian and US leaders “have been having quite constructive contacts for a long time.”

“At this point, an absolute, so to say, the convergence of the two countries’ interests to pool efforts to stabilize the oil markets, obviously, dictates the necessity of more frequent contacts,” he explained.

“The presidents have long, frank, constructive and efficient contacts,” Peskov said. “And you see the result – the (OPEC+ oil production cuts) deal has been finalized and formalized.”

Developments in the Trump administration including the appointments of radical figures who severely criticize Iran has coincided with the anti-Russia and anti-Putin propaganda on steroids from the United States and United Kingdom.

In an interview with the American television network NBC in March, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the alleged meddling of 13 Russian nationals in the 2016 American Presidential election “not linked” to the Kremlin. Putin said that his government is not liable for the millions of Russians living across the world suggesting that the election meddlers may not even be Russian. “Maybe they are not even Russians, but Ukrainians, Tatars or Jews, but with Russian citizenship. Maybe they have dual citizenship or a green card. Maybe the US paid them for this which should also be checked,” he said.

He, too, affirmed that if the Russian government is asked to run an investigation on the issue, the American government has to formally put in a request for it and that shouldn’t come through media propaganda and speculations by members of the US Congress.

What is worth noting here is that there are two words in Russian for what English speakers call “Russians”: Russki means belonging to the Russian people and Russic, which translates as Russian citizens who may not be Russians. Putin’s English translator in the interview seems to have deliberately or inadvertently ignored the difference between the two words.

Following Putin’s interview, Jewish groups criticized the Russian president of “anti-Semitism” for his comment.

Jonathan A. Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an international Jewish non-governmental organization always looking for anything allegedly “anti-semitic”, said: “President Putin bizarrely has resorted to the blame game by pointing the finger at Jews and other minorities in his country,” adding that “It is deeply disturbing to see the Russian president giving new life to classic anti-semitic stereotypes that have plagued his country for hundreds of years.”

Greenblatt suggested that Putin’s comments sounded as if it was ripped from the pages of the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” a text that, according to the New York Times, was mentioned in Russia numerous times in the 19th century as anti-Semitic propaganda.

The current story began with the assassination attempt of a Russian spy in the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and his daughter who were found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury, UK. Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were allegedly poisoned with military-grade nerve gas on March 4.

Sergei Viktorovich Skripal was a former Russian military intelligence officer who acted as a double agent for the UK’s intelligence services during the 1990s and early 2000s. In December 2004, he was arrested by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) and later tried, convicted of high treason, and imprisoned. In December 2004. He settled in the UK in 2010 following the Illegals Program spy swap.

An alleged assassination bid on British soil is a major problem for Prime Minister Theresa May’s government and May herself, who is pointing the finger at the Russian government and doing quite a bit of grandstanding about the incident.

On March 12, Prime Minister Theresa May claimed it was “highly likely” that Russia was to blame, after Britain identified the substance as a type of nerve agent developed by the Soviet military. But Britain has the nerve agent, too, and the primary lab for making deadly chemicals is just eight miles from Salisbury. No proof has been offered to pin the deed on Russia.

London has asked Moscow to explain the use of a military-grade nerve agent for the poisoning in England of Skripal and his daughter and UK police and the Security Service (MI5) said that they were pursuing 14 suspicious death cases that may lead to the Russian government.

The recent developments in the US and Britain seem quite coordinated and organized, suggesting that the West is likely to foment a “new Cold War” that targets Iran and Russia. This is an extremely dangerous gambit.

China’s Defense Ministry on Thursday urged the United States to abandon its Cold War mentality and opt for closer military cooperation, in response to a new US national security strategy.

In a statement posted on the Chinese social media network WeChat, the defense ministry expressed hope that “the US will abandon its Cold War mentality, look objectively at how the Chinese Army is evolving, work together with China to promote closer cooperation between the two nations’ militaries… protect regional and global peace, stability and prosperity together,”

The Chinese ministry reiterated China’s defensive military posture and rejected Trump’s accusations that Beijing was trying to challenge US influence. It said China would never seek world domination, Sputnik reported.

The plan unveiled Monday by US President Donald Trump framed China, Russia, Iran and North Korea as major threats that eroded US security and prosperity.

Trump also frequently blasted China on the campaign trail for alleged unfair trading practices, such as artificial currency devaluation. Since becoming president, though, Trump has softened his stance toward Beijing in an effort to secure more assistance on issue areas relating to the Korean Peninsula.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Monday commenting on the document that while Trump’s National Security Strategy frames China as a strategic and economic rival to the US, Beijing is “willing to work hard with the US side to dedicate ourselves to building a robust, stable and healthy trade and economic relationship.”

The US State Department has authorized the sale of $10.5 billion in Patriot missile systems to Poland, the linchpin of the NATO military alliance’s Eastern frontier against Russia.

The proposed sale includes four radar sets, four control stations, sixteen launching stations, and 208 Patriot Advanced Capabilty-3 (PAC-3) missiles, the Pentagon said Friday.

The deal now awaits the US Congress’ approval as it involves the purchase of advanced technology.

Under US law, Congress must be formally notified before the administration can take the final steps to conclude a government-to-government foreign military sale of major defense equipment with a significant value.

According to officials in Warsaw, US lawmakers were likely to let Poland get the missile systems, which are manufactured by US weapons manufacturer Raytheon.

The deal was expected to be accompanied by an undisclosed agreement which could see some technology transfer as well as significant investments in the Polish military industry, Polish media reported.

A State Department official said that the deal would give Poland “greater flexibility” in joint operations with the US and other NATO allies that also possess the missile system.

“Poland’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military provide us with new areas of potential defense cooperation between our two countries,” the unnamed official said.

Poland’s defense minister, Antoni Macierewicz, said earlier this year that he expected a deal on the Patriot systems to be sealed before the end of 2017.

Warsaw has been modernizing its armed forces since 2014, after the Crimean peninsula in neighboring Ukraine was reintegrated into Russia in a referendum.

The central European country last month pledged to increase its military spending from around 2 percent of GDP to 2.5 percent by 2030, in a bid to meet US President Donald Trump’s expectations from NATO allies.

The Polish government sees the deal as a key part of the comprehensive modernization of its armed forces by 2023. Two-thirds of Poland’s military equipment still dates to the Soviet era. Its armed forces have also suffered from decades of under-investment.

The deal can also falls in line with NATO’s military buildup in Eastern Europe against what it considers to be a “Russian threat.” American troops and military equipment have long been stationed in Poland.

She urged more women to enter politics and praised those who spoke up about the Hollywood movie mogul and Democratic donor Harvey Weinstein, saying his reported behavior was disgusting, The Guardian reported.

But Clinton observed that Donald Trump had admitted to sexual attack and had a long history of misogyny, yet his supporters were comfortable that he was now in the Oval Office.

Some Democrats had urged her to be silent after her defeat to Trump but she was not going to go away, said Clinton. She vowed to play her part in an attempt to win back Democratic seats in the forthcoming midterm elections. She admitted she “just collapsed with real grief and disappointment” after her election defeat.

Clinton, who is touring the country to promote What Happened – her memoir reflecting on the election defeat, told the BBC’s Andrew Marr: “Looking at the Brexit vote now, it was a precursor to some extent of what happened to us in the United States.”

She decried the amount of fabricated information voters were given: “You know, the big lie is a very potent tool and we’ve somewhat kept it at bay in western democracies, partly because of the freedom of the press. There has to be some basic level of fact and evidence in all parts of our society.”

She urged Britain to be cautious about striking a trade deal with Trump, saying he did not believe in free trade.

In other comments during the Cheltenham literary festival, she accused the Kremlin of waging an information war throughout the 2016 US election process. The tactics “were a clear and present danger to western democracy and it is right out of the Putin playbook”, she said.

“We know Russian agents used Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and even Pinterest to place targeted attack ads and negative stories intended not to hurt just me but to fan the flames of division in our society. Russians posed as Americans pretending to be LGBT and gun rights activists, even Muslims, saying things they knew would cause distress.”

She said some of the basics of the Russian interference in the 2016 election had been known, but “we were in the dark about the weaponisation of social media”. She cited new research from Columbia University showing that attack ads on Facebook paid for in roubles were seen by 10 million people in crucial swing states and had been shared up to 340m times.

Clinton said the matter of whether Trump’s campaign cooperated with Russian interference was a subject for congressional investigation. But she called for anyone found guilty of such cooperation with Moscow to be subject to civil and criminal law. “The Russians are still playing on anything and everything they can to turn Americans against each other,” she said.

“In addition to hacking our elections, they are hacking our discourse and our unity. We are in the middle of a global struggle between liberal democracy and a rising tide of illiberalism and authoritarianism. This is a kind of new cold war and it is just getting starting.”

The Russian campaign was leading to nationalism in Europe, democratic backsliding in Hungary and Poland, and a loss of faith in democracy, she said.

Clinton said she had thought the US electorate would have valued calm and composure as traits in their prospective president, and admitted she may not have been suited to reality TV-style campaigning. “I am an authentically reserved person,” she said. “Maybe that is all out the window now and maybe it does not matter how real you actually are, if you are not dancing on the table insulting people, using every rude thing you say to act as if you are tearing down political correctness.”

She said Barack Obama was very measured in his use of words and yet she was branded inauthentic when she tried the same approach. “Women are always judged more harshly.” Clinton said that the way Trump “played on bigotry, prejudice and paranoia was a very important motivator” in his election success.

Clinton dismissed reports that her husband, Bill Clinton, had criticized What Happened: “I am going to start calling things that are lies lies. I am not going to be tiptoeing around about it.” There was a small city industry “churning out lies about me and my family,” Clinton said.

When challenged about whether she had been wrong to denigrate women who had claimed her husband had made improper sexual advances, Clinton said the issue had been litigated, but the pattern of behavior by powerful men needed to be addressed.

Speaking later at the Southbank Centre as part of the London literary festival, Clinton said both Democrats and Republicans were scratching their heads thinking about how to interpose a system amid concerns that Trump could – in a fit of pique – gain access to the nuclear codes and order a nuclear attack. She said she had never expressed such a fear about a US president’s access to nuclear weapons.

She said one proposal was for the president to be required to seek the support of the defense secretary or secretary of state before launching an attack. She added she did not know if the Trump presidency would survive, claiming that many Republicans were as concerned as her about the damage being done to American institutions.
