Addressing Friday prayers worshippers in Tehran, Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani said the defeat of Daesh proved the “power of Islam, Iran and Hezbollah” to the US.

He also highlighted the role of Iraqi religious authorities in mobilizing efforts in the fight against Daesh.

The cleric further cautioned against the enemy’s future plots.

The recapture of the Syria town of Al-Bukamal from Daesh on November 19 marked an end to the terrorist group’s caliphate it had declared in 2014.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has said the elimination of Daesh Takfiris was a service to all humanity and a blow to the creators and supporters of the terrorist group, including the US.

Daesh militants had made swift advances in northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing large areas of Syria.

Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement stood by Syria in the war against Daesh.

“The fact is that Myanmar’s Muslims should not be forgotten because their problem is still unresolved,” Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi said in a meeting with a number of officials of the Iranian Red Crescent Society in the central city of Qom on Sunday.

The Rohingya Muslims are facing life-threatening problems inside Myanmar and have been seeking refuge outside of the country, he noted.

“…We, as Muslims, should join hands (to save the Rohingya) since they are our religious brothers and we have a responsibility (to help them),” the cleric went on to say.

The Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar have long faced severe discrimination and have been the targets of intensified violence since 2012.

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslim refugees have fled recent violence in Myanmar since August this year when the military started a crackdown on the Muslim minority.

The UN top human rights official has accused Myanmar of carrying out “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing” against Rohingya Muslims.

Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, the UN high commissioner for human rights, said in September the military’s “brutal” security campaign was in clear violation of international law, and cited what he called refugees’ consistent accounts of widespread extrajudicial killings, rape and other atrocities.

“The UN only condemns (the killings) and does not act because of the interests of some Western countries in this massacre,” Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi said in a speech on Wednesday.

The cleric further questioned some Muslim countries’ silence on the issue and said, “Aren’t these (Rohingya) our Muslim brothers?”

He called on Islamic countries’ foreign ministers to hold a meeting to work out a quick solution to the crisis.

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi also suggested that a delegation of Muslim clerics could be sent to Myanmar to hold dialogue with the Southeast Asian country’s government on the issue.

The Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar have long faced severe discrimination and have been the targets of intensified violence since 2012.

On September 12, the UN refugee agency said the number of Rohingya Muslim refugees that have fled recent violence in Myanmar has spiked to about 370,000.
