TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the country will never forget how Western countries backed Iraq’s ousted dictator Saddam Hussein when he carried out a chemical attack on the Iranian city of Sardasht in 1987.

“It’s been 33yrs since the chemical attack in Sardasht. We did & will never forget the support & complicity of US/Europe in the horrible attack by Saddam. We did & will never forget the UNSC silence on this heinous crime. We rebuild whatever they destroyed,” said the ministry in a tweeted a message on Saturday, Mehr News Agency (MNA) reported.

The message was sent on the anniversary of chemical attack against Sardasht on June 28, 1987, when Iraq dropped mustard gas bombs on four residential areas in Sardasht in West Azerbaijan province in two separate bombing runs.

Iraqi’s chemical bombing of the border town of Sardasht was the most horrific chemical attack that inflicted many negative effects and consequences.

Iran declared the attack as ‘inhumane’ and called the city of Sardasht as the first city to fall victim to chemical weapons in the world after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in Japan by the US in 1945.

The chemical attack by invading Iraqi Ba’athist planes to the city of Sardasht in western Iran killed 110 people and wounded 5,000. A number of Sardasht’s residents are still struggling with the adverse effects and consequences of the fatal bombardment.

Although the reports of Iraq’s use of chemical weapons were released one after another by the Security Council, the international body never took any action against Saddam Hussein’s regime and never condemned Iraq.

Meanwhile, earlier on Saturday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif addressed a meeting on the same occasion and said Iran would never pass over its humane principles to fight brutality as it showed at the time of Sardasht’s chemical bombardment.

“Iranians never tried to take revenge after that barbaric bombing and this was recorded in history as an honor for the Iranian nation that they don’t ignore their principles of human behavior to reciprocate brutality,” Zarif noted.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Russia’s Defense Ministry warned the White Helmets organization, jointly with militants from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group (formerly known as Nusra Front), are preparing for staging airstrikes and usage of chemical weapons in Syria’s northwestern Idlib de-escalation zone.

“Several sources have confirmed the information — militants from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group … together with the White Helmets organization are planning on chemical attack on settlements in Syria’s Idlib de-escalation zone in order to stage incidents of airstrikes with the use of chemical weapons,” the ministry said on Tuesday, Sputnik reported.

It added that residents of the Sarmada settlement had seen militants arriving at the town in early November in three trucks that were loaded with containers with chemicals as well as professional video-making equipment and pieces of Russian artillery.

The ministry said the militants had been recruiting people to participate in the staging of the chemical attack in Syria’s Idlib.

“It is being planned to make fake videos of destruction caused by airstrikes and artillery shooting at civil targets and the alleged use of chemical weapons in the Idlib province. (The videos) will be published on social media and used to blame the Syrian government and Russia over their alleged actions against civilians,” the ministry added.

The White Helmets is a UK-registered NGO. The group enjoys wide publicity and endorsement in the West but has been accused by Damascus of extremism and spreading propaganda.

Russia considers the group’s activity an element of an informational campaign aimed at the vilification of the Syrian government. In particular, Moscow accused the White Helmets of staging a false-flag provocation in Syria in 2013 that later gave grounds for the West to accuse Damascus of chemical attacks.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry vehemently denounced a chemical attack launched by terrorists on civilians in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

In a statement on Sunday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi expressed deep regret and concern over reports of the chemical attack in Aleppo, describing the incident as “inhumane and despicable”.

“The cause of such an inhumane act by terrorist groups is the unflinching intellectual, political, financial and military support provided by some regional and trans-regional states for these groups, which are on the brink of annihilation,” the Foreign Ministry’s website quoted him as saying.

Shelling by insurgents wounded more than 100 people, mostly civilians, in the suspected toxic gas attack in Syria’s Aleppo on Sunday.

State news agency SANA said 107 people were injured in Aleppo after militants hit three districts with projectiles containing gases that caused choking.

Chinese Ambassador to Tehran, Pang Sen, said Sun. that the alleged chemical attack in Syria must have been first investigated by the United Nations before any country took any measures in response.

The Chinese ambassador made the comment while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the meeting of a member of China’s Foreign Policy Advisory Committee with Senior adviser to Iranian Leader Ali Akbar Velayati in Tehran on Sunday.

“China believes that all countries must respect the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of each other,” he said. “We are against any measure that is taken outside the framework of the United Nations, and consider it a violation of international law.”

“Such measures will further complicate the situation in Syria,” Mr. Pang Sen said about the recent airstrikes on Syria carried out by the US, Britain and France. “China calls on the involved parties to pursue the issue through talks and the UN mechanism.”

He went on to add, “China considers a political solution as appropriate for settling the Syrian crisis. The International community also needs to resolve the Syrian issue through peaceful means and within the UN framework.”
