TEHRAN (Iran News) Head of the Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture (ICCIMA) Samad Hassanzadeh has welcomed the start of indirect talks between Iran and the United States.

Speaking on Sunday, Hassanzadeh stated that the decision to engage in negotiations with the U.S.—the first round of which was held in Muscat through Omani mediation on Saturday—demonstrates Tehran’s prudence and rational approach.

He emphasized that initiating dialogue with the U.S. is an important step toward revitalizing Iran’s economic activities.

Hassanzadeh also urged economic actors and entrepreneurs to take an active role in advancing the country’s economic diplomacy in collaboration with the Iranian administration, while maintaining a realistic view of the negotiations.

He noted that the talks in Oman have sparked optimism among Iran’s economic actors, but added that the primary strength of Iran’s entrepreneurs and producers lies in domestic capabilities and the skilled workforce.

Finally, Hassanzadeh said that any progress—whether achieved through negotiations or other initiatives—that strengthens production and expands foreign trade would set the stage for substantial development.

Reduced exchange rate and government’s exertion of pressure on exporters for repatriating exports currency have been cited as one of the main reasons behind significant reduction behind Iran’s export of products to Iran, he emphasized.

In addition, political movements in Iraq have been considered as an external factor contributed to the reduced export of products from Iran to Iraq, Hosseini stated.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the secretary general said, “Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) has halted daily release of exports statistics and added, “typically, whenever exports trend is slowed, exports situation is not satisfactory.”

Chairman of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA) Gholamhossein Shafei made the remarks late on Saturday in a conference entitled “Youth Entrepreneurship, Work and Future” in Iran and said, “today, moving towards development and growth is not a choice for countries, rather, it is a definite requirement.”

With their proper planning, different countries in the world have stepped up their development and growth according to their own requirements, he said and called on responsible officials and organizations to take effective steps in this regard.

However, entrepreneurs play a leading role in realization of objectives of a society, so that the country enjoys high potentials and capabilities to take giant step in this field optimally, Shafei emphasized.

Chairman of ICCIMA Shafei once again called on concerned officials to pave suitable ways for entrepreneurs in order to materialize objectives in this field.

In an interview in London, Lord Lamont said that all the activities and services of the chamber are underway as before, rejecting a report that the chamber in London has been shut down.

He, however, admitted that the London office of the chamber has been shut down in a bid to reduce the costs but reiterated that the chamber’s activities are being done and the meetings are held at the members’ offices.

In a tweet early Sunday, Iranian Ambassador to UK, Hamid Baeidinejad, rejected the BBC’s “scrambled and purposeful” report that the British-Iranian chamber of commerce in London has been shut down, and offered explanations to clear the misconception.

Baeidinejad explained that the chamber had rented an office in London for many years, but the contract ended last year, which required the chamber to look for a new office.

He added that the increase in rent prompted the chamber to come up with a solution to reduce expenses; therefore, the chamber decided to forgo the physical building and opt for a virtual/digital setup, and hire ICT technicians and rent conference halls when needed instead of having a permanent venue.

Baeidinejad further noted that the recent changes do not mean that the office has been shut down or is decreasing its activities; rather the changes are in line with using modern technology to better manage costs.

“The board of directors, as well as the chairman of the chamber, Lord Lamont, all remain in their positions, and the chamber will continue its usual activities without any changes,” he added.

The meeting will be held at the place of TPO, he added.

Presently, promotion of export of non-oil commodities is the main priority of Iran. The country is planned to take effective steps to offer high-quality products to the international markets and in particular those in its neighboring countries.

Iranian officials have a special focus on capabilities and potentials of Iran Chamber of Commerce in order to compile necessary strategies for the removal of exports barriers and facilitate trade exchanges.
