Cellphone imports hit 290% growth in 11 months

According To Iran News, The import of mobile phones into the country registered a 290 percent growth in 11 months of the last Iranian calendar year [from March 21, 2019 to Feb. 19, 2020] as compared to the last year’s corresponding period.

Accordingly, 9,799,367 cellphones were imported into the country, showing a significant 290 percent growth as compared to a year earlier.

Some 2,511,045 mobile phones were imported into the country from March 21, 2018 to March 20, 2019.

In the same period, passengers brought as many as 3,768,293 purchased cellphones into the country. The number stood at 2,759,875 in 2018.

Figures show that purchased cellphones carried by passengers into the country in 11 months of the last year registered a 36.5 percent growth as compared to the same period last year.

Cellphone imports in H1 at $242 million

The total value of mobile phones imported into Iran during the first six months of the current Iranian year (through Sep. 22) amounted to $242.692 million.

According to data released by Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), the number indicates a 54% year-on-year increase in cellphone imports in terms of value.

This is while over 700,000 handsets are yet to be released from the Customs.

According to IRICA’s report, cellphones have had a 1.09% share of the country’s total imports during the period.

During last year’s corresponding period, cellphones worth $158.069 million entered the domestic market, forming the meager share of 0.63% in the country’s total imports.

Cellphone registration scheme to resume

TEHRAN – Cellphone users in Iran shall resume the registration process based on the country’s telecommunications database from late April.

Iran performs the long-awaited national scheme to stop growing market for smuggled cellphones.

In the second half of the past Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20, 2018, about half of brands at cellphone market were registered.

Iran Customs Administration has imposed a 5-percent customs duty on the imports of cellphones and the importers should pay the 9-percent value added tax (VAT).

Those devices which are not registered with the database will be considered contraband and will be rendered unusable in the country.

According to Iranian officials 12.5 million cellphone devices are smuggled into the country depriving the government of $350 million in tax revenues, Head of Iran’s State Union of Audio-Video Equipment and Cell Phone Sellers Ebrahim Dorosti announced in a press conference in January 2018.

The officials have estimated that worth of $2.5 billion of phone devices are smuggled into the country per year, he said.
