TEHRAN (Iran News) An estimated 10,000 bodies are buried under the concrete wasteland in Gaza, Al Jazeera reported on Monday.

Citing information from Israeli authorities, the UN’s humanitarian office stated that 915 aid trucks entered Gaza on Monday.

Palestinians in Gaza are returning to their ruined homes and awaiting the delivery of much-needed food and medical assistance after Israeli forces ended their 15-month-long bombardment of the besieged territory.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 47,035 Palestinians and wounded 111,091 since October 7, 2023.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced on Sunday that the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal was implemented at 11:15 local time.

Although it was officially announced that the truce agreement would start at 0830 GMT the same day, the Israeli regime killed and wounded several Palestinians and breached the deal on the pretext of not receiving the list of Israeli prisoners.

IRAN NEWS POLITICAL DESK

TEHRAN – President Hassan Rouhani announced the country’s readiness to play a role in helping to strengthen the ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia and to stabilize the region.

He made the remarks in his meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov on Wednesday.

Referring to the clear positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and support for the territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Rouhani expressed satisfaction with the end of the war between the two countries and the liberation of the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and the establishment of a ceasefire.

He pointed to Iran’s plan for ending the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict by sending a special envoy to Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia and announced the country’s readiness to play a constructive role in helping to strengthen the ceasefire between the two countries and establish stability in the region.

Emphasizing the need to use the borders of Iran and Azerbaijan to develop economic and trade cooperation, the Iranian president said, “With the end of the Trump era in the United States and the coming to power of the new administration in this country, we feel that countries will have better conditions for cooperation.”

Rouhani further announced Iran’s readiness to participate in the reconstruction of the liberated areas of Azerbaijan, saying, “Given the proximity of the two countries and the facilities available in Iran, Iran’s participation in the reconstruction of the areas affected by the Nagorno-Karabakh war will be to the benefit of both countries.”

Referring to previous agreements between Iran and Azerbaijan, including the Rasht-Astara railway project, the President stressed the need to accelerate the implementation and operation of the agreements.

“Conditions are in place for the implementation of joint cooperation projects agreed between the two countries, including the Khoda Afarin Dam and the construction of a power plant,” he said, adding, “The two countries can further develop their cooperation in the fields of industry, science, pharmacy and other sectors.”

Rouhani called the relations with the friendly and neighboring country of Azerbaijan good and brotherly, saying, “The will of the Islamic Republic of Iran is to develop relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan, and we hope to use the opportunity to create new international conditions to further develop relations between the two countries.”

Appreciating the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, for his part, said,”We consider Iran as our good friend and neighbor, and the will of the President and Azerbaijani officials is the comprehensive development of relations with Iran.”

Referring to the liberation of the occupied territories of this country and the revival of 132 km of border with Iran, he added, “Azerbaijan’s border with Iran is a border of friendship and development, and we believe that the revival of these borders can create new cooperation projects for the two countries.”

He emphasized the development and deepening of relations with Iran in political, economic and trade fields, saying, “The implementation of the Rasht-Astara railway project will increase economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.”

Bayramov expressed hope that with the new international conditions and the removal of existing obstacles caused by US sanctions, joint cooperation projects between the two countries will be implemented and operational quickly.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan also condemned the assassination of the Iranian scientist Martyr Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, stressing, “The assassination of a scientific scientist is not acceptable in any way and we strongly condemn this action.”

In a statement released on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh called on Baku and Yerevan to honor the truce and avoid attacking civilians.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran deplores the violation of a ceasefire announced amid the recent clashes between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia, calls on the two parties to exercise more self-restraint, condemns the missile attacks on the vital infrastructures, the residential areas of cities, and the killing of civilians, and expresses sympathy with the bereaved families,” he said.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran once again calls on the two sides to remain committed to the ceasefire and resume their talks within the framework of the international law, respect for the territorial integrity of each other, and evacuation of the occupied cities,” Khatibzadeh added.

The spokesman expressed Iran’s readiness to help facilitate the negotiations for achieving permanent and sustainable peace and solution in the region.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have accused each other of violating the terms of the ceasefire in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region brokered by Russia last week.

While the ceasefire was supposed to halt fighting to allow ethnic Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh and Azeri forces to swap prisoners and war dead, both sides accused each other of breaking the truce within minutes after it took effect on Saturday.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The United Nations has welcomed the calls for a ceasefire and an end to hostilities in Libya, an official from the world body said.

Libya’s internationally recognized government in Tripoli announced the cease-fire on Friday and the leader of a rival parliament in eastern Libya also appealed for a halt to hostilities.

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomes the calls for a cease-fire and an end to hostilities in Libya and hopes they “will be respected immediately by armed forces from both sides,” said the spokesperson for the UN chief, Stephane Dujarric, AP reported.

The UN chief urged the Joint Military Commission to quickly take up the cease-fire call and called on all parties “to engage constructively in an inclusive political process” based on the outcome of a conference of world leaders in Berlin in January, Dujarric said.

World powers and other countries with interests in Libya’s long-running civil war agreed at the meeting to respect a much-violated arms embargo, hold off on military support to the warring parties and push them to reach a full cease-fire.

UAE’s Foreign Ministry welcomed Saleh’s cease-fire initiative that did not include the demilitarization of Jurfa area, according the state-run WAM news agency.

The interior minister of the Tripoli-based administration, Fathi Bashaga, hailed the cease-fire initiative, saying on Twitter: “We are looking forward to develop cooperation with the US, Europe, Turkey, Egypt and the UN.”

Fayez Sarraj, head of the Government of National Accord in Tripoli, said an effective cease-fire requires “the demilitarization of Sirte and Jurfa areas, and that police forces from the two sides agree on security arrangements there.”

Aguila Saleh, speaker of the rival eastern-based House of Representatives, supported Sarraj’s proposal of demilitarization of Sirte – but he did not mention Jurfa. The United States floated the idea of demilitarization earlier this month.

Sarraj also called for parliamentary and presidential elections to be held in March according to “a constitutional base to be agreed on by the Libyans.”

Saleh, the parliament speaker, called for Sirte to be a temporary seat of the new government.

Both Saraj and Saleh said they want an end to an oil blockade imposed by commander Khalifa Haftar’s camp since earlier this year. They also called for oil revenues, the country’s main source of revenue, to flow into the bank account of the National Oil Corporation outside Libya.

The National Oil Corporation urged for oil revenues to “remain frozen until a comprehensive political agreement is reached.”

“Full transparency and effective governance are required as well as the return of security management of oil facilities to NOC’s exclusive control,” it said in a statement.

Powerful tribes in eastern Libya loyal to Haftar closed oil export terminals and choked off major pipelines at the start of the year to pressure the Tripoli-based government, which is accused of using oil revenues to fund militias and mercenaries.

“If a truce is good, why (only) three days, let a lasting one prevail,” Seyed Rasoul Mousavi tweeted on Thursday.

It came after the Taliban on Tuesday announced a three-day ceasefire in Afghanistan during the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha starting on Friday.

In a statement, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid ordered the group’s fighters “to refrain from carrying out any operation” during the Eid al-Adha celebrations but warned any attack “by the enemy” would be met with force.

The truce announcement on Eid Al-Adha was “a positive step towards peace and stability” in Afghanistan, Seyed Abbas Mousavi said in a statement on Wednesday.

He also expressed hope that “the move by the Taliban will help provide the necessary condition for an agreement in Afghanistan.”

“We hope that we will soon see the beginning of intra-Afghan dialogue centered on the Afghan government and with the participation of all political groups, including the Taliban, with the aim of finding a peaceful solution and reaching a mutually acceptable agreement for peace based on the constitution and democratic structures in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,” Mousavi said, Press TV reported.

He also reiterated the Islamic Republic of Iran’s readiness to contribute to promotion of the Afghan-Afghan dialogue at the request of the parties involved.

In a statement, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid ordered the group’s fighters “to refrain from carrying out any operation” during the Eid al-Adha celebrations but warned any attack “by the enemy” would be met with force.

The Afghan president’s spokesman, Sediq Sediqqi, said the government welcomed the ceasefire announcement but added that Afghans wanted “a lasting ceasefire and the start of direct talks between the Taliban and the government of Afghanistan.”

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of all those who were killed, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” said the coordinator.

A fresh flare-up of violence in the Gaza Strip caused by deadly Israeli airstrikes and retaliatory Palestinian rocket attacks has entered its third day, prompting the United Nations to raise alarm at the “dangerous escalation.”

Tensions erupted on Friday following the killing of four Palestinians, two in an Israeli air raid on southern Gaza and two during the regime’s live fire at anti-occupation protesters near a fence separating the blockaded coastal enclave from the occupied territories.

According to news reports, some 430 rockets have been fired from Gaza strip to Israeli regime’s positions in past two days in retaliation. The Israeli army says its warplanes have targeted some 180 sites in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli attacks have claimed the lives of a total of seven Palestinians, including Saba Mahmoud Abu Arar, a 14-month-old baby girl, and her 8-month pregnant mother.

In a statement released a few hours after the escalation of violence began, Mladenov said that the UN is “working with Egypt and all sides to calm the situation” and “called on all parties to “immediately de-escalate and return to the understandings of the past few months.”

“Those who seek to destroy them will bear responsibility for a conflict that will have grave consequences for all,” he stressed, referring to a fragile Egypt-brokered and UN-backed ceasefire recently agreed upon.

Mladenov added that “continuing down the current path of escalation will quickly undo what has been achieved and destroy the chances for long term solutions to the crisis. This endless cycle of violence must end, and efforts must accelerate to realize a political solution to the crisis in Gaza.”

He further stressed that “the current violence jeopardizes the significant progress made in recent weeks to relieve the suffering of people in Gaza, lift the closures, and support intra-Palestinian reconciliation.”

Against a backdrop of longstanding shortages of basic goods and services in Gaza linked to a more than decade-long air, sea and land blockade by the occupying regime, Palestinian protests began over a year ago in the Strip. In an ongoing cycle of violence, in over a year, close to 200 Palestinians have been killed, including more than 40 children and over 1300 have been injured.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the Yemeni warring parties have reached an agreement on a ceasefire in the Red Sea port city of Hudaydah, as a new round of peace talks aimed at ending nearly four years of a brutal Saudi-led war on its southern neighbor came to a close in Sweden.

The UN chief made the announcement on Thursday, shortly after the delegations of Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement and the country’s former Saudi-backed government agreed that the world body play a “leading role” at the vital port, which is currently controlled by the Houthis.

“There is a ceasefire declared for the whole governorate of Hudaydah in the agreement and there will be both from the city and the harbor a withdrawal of all forces,” Guterres said, adding that after the pullout, the UN would begin facilitating aid access to the civilian population.

More than 70 percent of Yemen’s imports used to pass through the docks of Hudaydah.

Hudaydah has, however, been placed under a tight siege since June, when the Saudi-led coalition and their allied militia loyal to the government of Yemen’s ex-president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, launched a full-scale military push to seize the strategic port city in defiance of international warnings.

The significant agreement came a week after the rival Yemeni sides began peace negotiations, brokered by UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths and his team, in Rimbo, a locality near the Swedish capital of Stockholm.

The Riyadh-backed side had on Friday said the Houthis must hand over the vital port. However, Mohammed Abdulsalam, the head of the Houthi delegation at the peace talks, strongly rejected the proposal, saying that Hudaydah must be kept apart from the military conflict, and that a government should be formed first before all parties are disarmed.

Griffiths, for his part, said on Thursday that the pullout of all forces should take place “within days.” He is due to brief the UN Security Council on Yemen on Friday.

The fate of the international airport of Sana’a, the Yemeni capital, has also been a hot issue on the agenda of the talks. The capital is under the control of the Houthis, but the Saudi led-military coalition controls Yemen’s maritime borders and airspace.

The airport has been closed to commercial flights for the past nearly three years. Griffiths said its fate would be discussed at the next round of talks, which will take place at the end of January 2019, according to the UN chief.

“It’s clear and it’s public knowledge that starting point is opening up to commercial flights, maybe domestic at first, and eventually (international),” he added.

Guterres, who arrived in Sweden late Wednesday to attend the closing session, further announced in a press conference on Thursday that both parties had also reached a series of other breakthroughs regarding the bloody conflict in Yemen, including a “mutual understanding” on Yemen’s third city of Ta’izz, another hotspot in the war-ravaged country and the scene of some of the most intense clashes between the rivals.

Leading a coalition of its allies, Saudi Arabia invaded Yemen in March 2015 in an attempt to reinstall Hadi, who had resigned amid popular discontent and fled to Riyadh.

The imposed war initially consisted of an aerial campaign, but was later coupled with a naval blockade and the deployment of ground mercenaries to Yemen. Furthermore, armed militia forces loyal to Hadi, in line with invaders, launch frequent attacks against Yemeni people in regions held by Houthis.

Since the onset of aggression, the Yemeni army, backed by fighters from Houthi Ansarullah movement, has been defending the impoverished nation against the invaders. The coalition is also resolute to crush the movement as another goal in its war on Yemen, which is teetering on the edge of famine.

The aggression is estimated to have left 56,000 Yemenis dead.

Riyadh had declared at the start of the invasion that the war would take no more than a couple of weeks.

The Saudi-led war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN has said that a record 22.2 million Yemenis are in dire need of food, including 8.4 million threatened by severe hunger. According to the world body, Yemen is suffering from the most severe famine in more than 100 years.

A number of Western countries, the US and Britain in particular, are also accused of being complicit in the ongoing aggression as they supply the Riyadh regime with advanced weapons and military equipment as well as logistical and intelligence assistance.
