TEHRAN – A university scholar says that transferring water from the Caspian Sea to the Iranian central plateau may be more dangerous than an atomic explosion.

“The detrimental impacts of transferring water from the Caspian Sea to the central province of Semnan can be more catastrophic than a nuclear explosion,” Mohammad Darvish, a faculty member of the Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands said on Monday.

Transferring water from the Caspian Sea can lead to multi-sided environmental disasters both for the sea and the regions along the route, Darvish said, Mehr News Agency reported.

He described two possible scenarios for this transfer, both of which capable of damaging the environment.

If the water desalination is carried out at the source, the Caspian Sea will be more salinized, threatening its ecosystem more than ever, he said, adding, “The pollution level of the sea is currently 40 times above the standard range, and it cannot withstand any further pollution.”

The second scenario is to do the desalination at the destination. This means that salty water is going to flow in pipelines through Hyrcanian forests, he added. “If due to an earthquake or chemical reactions or any other reason the pipe bursts, a true catastrophe will occur in the forests which can be even more disastrous than a nuclear explosion.”

“Why instead of pursuing the simpler solution of managing wastewater, we are eager to invest millions of dollars in water transfer?”

He further noted that such programs need to be approved by other Caspian Sea littoral cities, adding, “They have a share in the sea water as well.”

Since fishing and tourism in the northern provinces crucially depend on the sea, any damaging project can negatively affect the economy of the regions, highlighted Darvish.

Due to the lack of water resources in the central regions of Iran and the ever increasing need for this vital element for development, ninth administration proposed a plan for transferring the Caspian Sea water to Semnan Province in 2005. Eventually the transferring project was approved in June, 2012.

Since then, the department of environment has delayed the project due to its potential environmental issues, however, it seems that the new environment chief is showing the green light for this transfer.

“Why instead of pursuing the simpler solution of managing wastewater, we are eager to invest millions of dollars in water transfer?” phrased Darvish who resigned from the department of environment in October 2017 to express his discontent over the changed policies of the department.

“We spend millions of dollars [for these kind of projects] with the aim of improving the life quality of our people, but at the end of the day, we [actually] aggravate the living conditions, isn’t that absurd?” he concluded.

TEHRAN – Head of Iran-Russia Joint Chamber of Commerce called for close economic interaction among all Caspian states, saying trade exchange should not be confined to three neighbors alone.

Asadollah Asgaroladi urged on Sunday that Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan join the trade interaction among Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan.

He said he has made a suggestion to President Hassan Rouhani for the expansion of Tehran-Moscow-Baku trilateral relations to pan-Caspian ties, saying it would promote economic and trade activities in the Caspian region.

A shift from trilateral relations to five-party interaction among Caspian littoral states would enhance political, economic and cultural cooperation in the region, he said.

On Wednesday, the presidents of Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan held a summit in Tehran to discuss the latest regional developments and mutual cooperation.

Iranian officials has always supported expansion of economic cooperation among the Caspian Sea littoral states -Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed water body on earth by area, variously classed as the world’s largest lake or a full-fledged sea.

TEHRAN- The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and the Norwegian Offshore Resource Group (ORG) inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation in conducting development studies on Sardar-e-Jangal oilfield and the exploratory blocks of 24, 26 and 29 in the Caspian Sea.

The MOU was signed in Tehran on Tuesday by Mohsen Delaviz, the managing director of Khazar Exploration and Production Company (KEPCO) – a subsidiary of NIOC- and Jostein Kaare Kjerstad, the executive director of ORG, the website of NIOC announced.

In 2002, Iran discovered a gas field in 700 meters water depth off the shore of the northern province of Gilan in the Caspian Sea and named it Sardar-e Jangal. The field contains total proven reserve of around 50 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Some 10 years later, exploration operation of Amir Kabir semi-submersible drilling rig (the largest offshore structure of the country with a weight of 14,700 tons) in the field led to discovery of an oil layer in 728 meters water depth in Sardar-e Jangal. The field is estimated to hold two billion barrels of quality crude that is toxic hydrogen sulfide free. Some 25% of the deposit is thought to be recoverable.

With some deposits discovered and some exploration activities conducted, the country is now seeking technical assistance from the outside to expand its deepwater operations in the Caspian Sea.

Brazil has voiced interest in looking for hydrocarbon reserves in the Iranian share of the Caspian Sea.

This was announced by Brazil’s Ambassador to Tehran Rodrigo de Azeredo Santos in a meeting with Yousef Etemadi, the acting managing director of Iran’s Khazar Exploration and Production Company (KEPCO).

Santos emphasized that Brazil’s Petrobras was ready to cooperate with the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and its subsidiary companies like KEPCO in conducting exploration operations in the Caspian Sea.

He further emphasized that this would be in line with the discussions that Brazil’s Energy Minister Fernando Coelho Filho had with Iran’s Petroleum Minister Bijan Zangeneh during a recent visit to Tehran.

Etemadi, for his part, said KEPCO had been able to obtain an extensive experience in studying the hydrocarbon prospects in the Caspian Sea, but would nonetheless appreciate the opportunity of cooperating with global energy corporations in finding oil and gas reserves in the sea.

He also emphasized that KEPCO was satisfied with previous instances of cooperation with Petrobras.

The Brazilian state company was involved in the exploration of Iran’s Tusan block in the Persian Gulf. However, it announced in 2009 that the project was not economically feasible.

It had also won a deal from the NIOC to look for oil and gas reserves in a block in the Caspian Sea but declared – again in 2009 – that it would not begin the exploration operations.

This was because, as Reuters reported, the block it had targeted “appeared to hold mostly natural gas, rather than oil, in an area that did not have the necessary infrastructure for gas production”.
