The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance has decided to cancel the Press Exhibition this year due to the current adverse economic conditions facing the country and print media, the Persian service of MNA reported on Saturday.

Mohammadreza Darbandi, the director of the Domestic Press and News Agencies Department of the culture ministry, refused to give further details about the decision.

Deputy Culture Minister for Press Affairs Mohammad Soltanifar previously said that the Press Exhibitions would likely be canceled due to the economic problems facing the newspapers.

Over the past few months, the high price and shortage of newsprint paper and a reluctance by firms to advertise in the press have led to the closure of several newspapers, including Hambastegi.

In addition, many newspapers have downsized their workforce and reported a decrease in the number of their pages.

The cost of organizing the Press Exhibition has been estimated at 50 billion rials (over $1 million). The culture ministry was seeking a sponsor to support the Press Exhibition this year. However, no firm agreed to support the event.

TEHRAN – Two football matches in Hazfi Cup were postponed because of air pollution in Tehran, capital of Iran.

Esteghlal match against Iranjavan Bushehr was canceled on Monday and Iran football officials also postponed a match between Persepolis and Sanat Naft in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

No new date for the fixtures has been announced.

Iran shut primary schools in the capital and other parts of the country on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday due to choking levels of air pollution.

A blanket of smog has covered neighborhoods in the capital in the past few days. Authorities also ordered mines and cement factories in Tehran province to close and reinforced regular traffic restrictions in the capital’s center.

In 2012, pollution contributed to the premature deaths of 4,500 people in Tehran and about 80,000 in the country, the health ministry said.
