U.S. imposes new tariffs on imports from China, Canada, Mexico; retaliatory measures expected

TEHRAN (Iran News) United States President Donald Trump has declared new tariffs on imports of goods from China, Mexico, and Canada, claiming that these measures are aimed at curbing the flow of illegal migrants and drugs into his country.

The tariffs, including 25% on all imports from Mexico, 25% on most commodities from Canada, and 10% on Chinese products, are claimed to be carried out in a bid to combat illegal drug trafficking and undocumented migration.

However, the tariffs could result in significant price hikes for consumers of everyday items in the U.S., potentially affecting imports of everything from avocados to vehicles.

In reaction to these tariffs, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared retaliatory tariffs on the United States.

Sheinbaum wrote on his X account that he directed the Secretary of Economy to put Plan B into action, which includes both tariff and non-tariff measures to protect Mexico’s interests.

Trudeau announced 25% levies on approximately $155 billion worth of U.S. commodities.

China’s government strongly disapproved of the Trump administration’s decision. China urged the U.S. to engage in honest discussions to prevent further escalation of tensions. The Chinese commerce ministry described the imposition of tariffs as a serious violation of international trade rules. The ministry also will file a complaint with the World Trade Organization to challenge the tariffs.

The new tariffs are scheduled to take effect on Tuesday, utilizing the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which permits the U.S. president to regulate imports during a national emergency.

Trump insists that the move is essential for the United States’ safety but acknowledged potential short-term disruptions for American consumers.

Business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, criticized the tariffs, warning such measures would raise prices and disrupt supply chains.

The tariff policy indicates a significant shift from the previous duty-free trade agreements and raises the stakes in what could escalate tensions into a larger trade war.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –In a statement signed by over 250 lawmakers, the Iranian Parliament condemned the Canadian government’s “ill-advised” move to designate the IRGC, saying such an “idiotic” measure that has violated all international laws and regulations reveals Canada’s backing for the Zionist regime.

The MPs also called on the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to employ all political and international approaches to condemn Canada’s measure.

The government of Canada, known as a staunch supporter of the criminal Zionist regime and its genocidal crimes against Gaza, has blacklisted the IRGC following the recent “strategic developments” after Iran carried out the retaliatory True Promise Operation against Israeli military targets, the statement said.

In a hostile move against Iran, Canada’s Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc Ottawa on June 19 listed the IRGC as a “terrorist entity” under the Criminal Code and called on Canadians in Iran to leave.

Last month, the Canadian House of Commons adopted a non-binding resolution calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to blacklist the IRGC and expel an estimated 700 Iranians.

The move makes Canada the second country in North America after the United States to blacklist the IRGC.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran has launched legal proceedings at the UN’s top court against Canada for breaching Tehran’s state immunity by designating the country a sponsor of terrorism under “false and wrongful” allegations.

A statement by the Iranian government’s website said Tehran wants the the International Court of Justice to compel Canada to stop violating the Iranian government’s immunities as a sovereign state in Canadian courts and avoid repeating such breaches of international law in the future.

Iran’s filing to the court also demands compensation from Canada.

It said the violations began in 2012, when Ottawa listed Iran as a terror sponsor under “false and wrongful” allegations and then seized property and assets belonging to the Iranian government.

The statement said Canada has continued this “wrong process” in spite of repeated protests by Iran.

“Iran, through this move, once again showed [its adherence] to its principled position on the peaceful settlement of differences and commitment to the rule of law regarding relations between countries,” the statement said, expressing hope that Canada will change its “political approach” and stop violating its obligations.

Tehran said Canada had breached international law by court rulings ordering Iranian assets to be handed over to victims of various attacks that Canada blames on groups backed by Iran.

The Hague-based court confirmed in a statement that Iran had launched legal proceedings against Canada on Tuesday.

Iran said in its filing to the court that “Canada has adopted and implemented a series of legislative, executive, and judicial measures against Iran and its property [since 2012] in breach of its international obligations,” said the statement.

“Iran respectfully requests the Court to adjudge and declare that by failing to respect the immunities of Iran and its property, Canada has violated its international obligations toward Iran,” it added.

It also said that Iran demanded compensation from Canada for the “violation of its international obligations”, and asked the ICJ to tell Ottawa to overrule any judgments against Tehran in Canadian courts.

Tehran has also filed a case against Washington over using billions of dollars in assets frozen to compensate victims of alleged terror attacks.

In March, ICJ judges ruled Washington had illegally allowed courts to freeze assets of some Iranian companies and ordered Washington to pay compensation, but left the amount to be determined later.

The statement by the Iranian government also rejected Canada’s frequent accusations that Iran supports terrorism and violates human rights.

The statement said Canada has systematically violated human rights, supported the “dominating and interventionist” foreign policies of the US, and has acted as an accomplice in the Israeli regime’s inhumane crimes in Palestine and southwest Asia.

“It shouldn’t be forgotten that the Canadian government has in its anti-human rights record the genocide of hundreds of native indigenous children at compulsory schools and the mass burial of these innocent children,” it said, referring to recent discoveries of hundreds of graves of indigenous children at former government-run compulsory boarding schools in Canada.

Canada broke off diplomatic ties with Iran and closed its Tehran embassy in a surprise move in 2012, citing various reasons including Iran’s support for Syria, its nuclear work and alleged threats to the Israeli regime.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – On last Thursday, the government of Canada joined the wagon of the Western countries who took a hostile position against the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding the recent riots in the country and announced sanctions against some Iranian individuals and organizations..

The government of Canada imposed sanctions on a wide range of Iranian institutions and persons over alleged “rights violations” following the recent foreign-backed riots in the country.

Reacting to this biased decision by a country which itself is a main violator of human rights, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman sharply criticized Western governments for using human rights as a “tool” to exert pressure on other countries, following baseless accusations leveled by the West over the recent foreign-backed riots in Iran.

“When human rights become a plaything and a tool to exert political pressure on others, the media empire of the hegemonic system also helps those accused of systematic human rights violations to stand in the position of plaintiffs,” Nasser Kanaani said.

He said the world still has not forgotten the tragic accounts of the forced separation of more than 150,000 Indigenous children from their families and the discovery of mass graves containing the remains of hundreds of these children on the grounds of former residential schools in Canada about a year ago.

“Blurting out words about other countries and hiding behind accusations against others will not change the fact that behind the window of human rights in one of the American government’s closest allies, child killing and disregard for humanity is showing,” he added.

Everybody is well aware about the hostile attitude of Ottawa against Tehran as this Western country has cut its diplomatic relation with Iran and has continued its hostile acts against Tehran.

Ottawa tries to paint a nice picture of it as a human rights defender but this country has turned into a place for economic corrupts and persons who are active against their governments.

Since the IRGC is the arm of the Islamic Revolution and a thorn in the eyes of the West, it comes under fire from the Western countries and every time something happens in Iran or in the region, the Western countries blames the IRGC and resort to sanctions against protector of the country and its members or designating it as terrorist body while the Western armies are themselves the real examples of terrorists in disguise.

Ottawa has not forgotten that it has not yet returned one of Iran’s famous economic corrupt, Mohammad Reza Khavari, who has taken shelter in this country. It seems Canada acts like father and like son and it follows its father the U.S. in imposing sanctions against Iran in order not to fall behind from its father.

Earlier the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on seven Iranian officials over what it claimed to be the shutdown of internet access and the crackdown on protesters and Canada immediately followed the US.

Of course we are well aware that the bans are the “backbone” of the so-called American human rights regulations. The US and Canada, despite pretending support of human rights, are themselves violators of human rights and the world has realized it and now most countries do not give a damn to the claims of these two countries in supporting human rights.

Every day, a new list of sanctions against Iran is published under some pretext and now Iranians have become immune against these useless sanctions because Iranian officials have no money in Western banks and they are not even eager to visit these two countries and they just travel to those states when there is an international meeting.

The whole Iranian people, without any distinction and discrimination, have been struggling for many years with the brutal sanctions of the United States, which have targeted their livelihood, jobs, health and normal life but no Western country like Canada has tried to at least pretend support of human rights and to condemn the U.S. sanctions which hurt the people but they have even jumped to defend the US sanctions and they have followed Washington.

Canada is better to mind its own business and observe human rights issues in its own country rather than meddle in other countries’ domestic affairs because it itself needs more than other countries observance of human rights issues.

Almost more than one year after discovery of mass graves containing the remains of hundreds of the children on the grounds of former residential schools in Canada, the Ottawa government has not taken any action and has tried to silence the society and closing the case by resorting to other issues and distracting the public opinion.

So the Islamic Republic of Iran gives no damn to any sanctions and threat from countries like Canada which are themselves violators of international laws and human rights and the country has found its path and will resist and fight against such inhuman sanctions and threats, and the government of Canada is better to resort other pretexts for condemning Tehran rather than human rights.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Iranian-made pharmaceuticals are currently exported to Canada, Japan, and Europe, Faramarz Ekhteraei, chairman of the Iranian Pharmaceutical Industries Syndicate, has said.

Emphasizing that 72 percent of the country’s pharmaceutical raw materials are domestically produced, he added that Iran has many capabilities in the pharmaceutical industry and investors should pay attention to it.

Pharmaceuticals should be taken into consideration due to their strategic importance in the treatment and health sector because there are capacities in the world for the production of effective medicinal substances that we can produce with the help of knowledge-based companies and pharmaceutical manufacturers with quality and low prices, he highlighted.

Iran is the third leading country in Asia capable of producing biopharmaceuticals. According to him, the technical speed of the pharmaceutical industry is high and it should be considered for investment. We have achieved acceptable growth in the fields of packaging, active ingredients, and the pharmaceutical chain, and the government should also provide more support in this field.

Iran’s API and Pharmaceutical Packaging Syndicate and Iran Food and Drug Administration (IFDA) will organize the 4th Pharmex International Exhibition (Middle East) from August 23 to 26, at Iran Mall International Expo Center.

On the sidelines of the event, a “special meeting for the development of commercial cooperation in the pharmaceutical industry” will also be held for the first time in the country.

Rise in pharmaceuticals, medical production

The import of pharmaceuticals has declined in Iran by 91 percent, which shows the capability of the country’s pharmaceutical industry, Mohammad Reza Shanehsaz, former head of the Food and Drug Administration, said last October.

Today, all medicine used in the treatment of coronavirus are produced by domestic manufacturers, and if we wanted to import all the items, there would be a high exchange rate, he further stated, emphasizing that COVID-19 vaccine development indicates the pharmaceutical industry’s capability.

In 2018, 67 percent of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) used to produce drugs in Iran were made locally.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Canada in recent decades has tried to paint a picture of it as a true human rights defending country but it has actually turned into a haven for the economic corrupts and political oppositions of other countries and it now actually acts like its lord, the U.S., against all human rights principles and politicizes everything.

A couple of weeks ago Canadian media outlets reported that Canada would host the Islamic Republic of Iran for a friendly soccer match and this report suddenly came under spotlight and it faced some backlashes from the politicians in both countries but the Football Federation of Canada reiterated that the match would go on as schedule and it would not pay any attention to the oppositions and even it started selling 40,000 tickets for the match.

After days of opposition from some politicians in Canada and a few number of anti-revolutionary Iranians and Canadian politicians, the Football Federation of Canada suddenly on Thursday in a tweet surprised the football fans by announcing the cancellation of the match without giving any reasons behind the cancellation.

Of course, everybody knows it well that the cancellation has been because of the political pressures and once again politics played its role over the fate of a sport event and led to its cancellations. In recent years, sports fans have heard of these kinds of remarks by officials that politics should not interfere the sports events and even international sport federations have set this issue as one of their principles and have sanctioned or punished federations or athletes who politicize the sports. Iranian federations and athletes the past have faced such punishments due to the claims of politicizing the sports.

But now Canada as a country which claims defending human rights and is against politicizing the sport has involved in a dirty political game by cancelling a football match between Iran and Canada which is definitely because of the political reasons.

The Football Federation of Canada for the sake of a bunch of Iranian oppositions’ claim has taken a political decision against its principle and once again Canada showed the world it cannot be a true human rights defender or supporter of non-politicized sport event.

Reacting to Canada’s decision, Kazem Gharibabadi, vice-president of Iran’s judiciary tweeted, “Canada’s decision to call off a friendly with Iran is testimony to the fact that it “can’t keep politics off the pitch.”

Canada’s game against Iran in Vancouver on June 5 was seen by Canadian football authorities as pivotal to preparations for the finals to be held in Qatar later this year.

But the fixture created controversy, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau opposed to the game, describing it as a “bad idea”.

Shortly after the Canadian decision, Iran’s “Team Melli” media officer Mohammad Jamaat told state television that Tehran will “file a complaint to FIFA”, the world game’s governing body, against the Canadian decision.

The match cancellation comes nine days after Prime Minister Trudeau criticized Canada Soccer (Canada’s football federation) for their decision to invite Iran.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson accused Canada of politicizing the game match. He told Iranian state media Press TV that his country will hold Canada responsible for any violations of its agreement with Canada Soccer.

Of course, Iranians expected the match to be cancelled or to turn into a political show by gathering of anti-revolutionary people at the stadium for creating another political farce against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Canada has turned into the tail of the U.S. and it is acting as a hostile country against Tehran and it has hosted most of Iranian opposition groups for continuing their hostile activities against Tehran. Canada has closed its embassy in Tehran to show its faithfulness to the U.S. and definitely it follows what its lord asks.

Now it is time for FIFA to show its sincerity regarding its policy of not politicizing soccer matches or events by taking a firm decision against Canada which cancelled the match due to political reasons. We hope that FIFA acts duly unlike other international bodies which act in favor of the big countries by ignoring punishments for them while Iranians are taking action for reportedly $10m damages.

If Canada thinks that such moves can weaken Iran’s national team performance in the World Cup and against its lord the U.S., it is fully wrong because Canada cannot affect determination of Iranian Cheetahs and definitely Iran will show its power against the U.S. in the World Cup group stage in Qatar like what it did in 1992 in France where Iranian national soccer team overpowered the U.S. and brought joy to the nation.

Canada is the big loser of this political decision and sooner or later it will see the backlash of this politicized decision which angered Iranians and made their determination stronger than ever to defeat any country which plays foul against them.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran has strongly denounced attempts by the Canadian government to scuttle a friendly match between the national Iranian men’s football team and Canada in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, stating that the sporting event must not be used as a political plaything.

“The match has been coordinated independently by the football federations of the two countries, within the framework of the usual football training matches, and the Canadian Soccer Association has announced that it is determined to host this purely sporting event by preventing any political abuse by known anti-Iran groups,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, contrary to the theatrical claims, the most athletic things seem to have become a plaything of partisan orientations and political partitioning within Canada. The negative stances and statements of the Prime Minister of Canada and some others indicate the predominance of a purely political and partisan view in all aspects of governance in Canada, and therefore the behavior of the Canadian authorities in public easily becomes a plaything of opposition and Iranophobic groups,” it said.

“The Canadian government and Canada Soccer are expected to facilitate this preparatory and friendly meeting, free from political motivations and propaganda blackmail by opponents of non-political interactions between people, in accordance with the professional charter of sports and recognized FIFA principles,” it added.

Khatibzadeh also said, “The Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran has assured us that it has made all the necessary agreements with Canada Soccer within this framework, and in case of violation of the agreements, the Canadian side will be responsible for all the consequences.”

Iran and Canada have both qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and will have to play warm-up matches as part of preparation for the prestigious event.

Canada Soccer has invited the national Iranian soccer team to play the Canadian squad in a June 5 match in Vancouver.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Khatibzadeh condemned repeated Israeli acts of aggression against Syria, calling on international organizations to give a decisive response to the Tel Aviv regime’s crimes.

He stated that international indifference to incessant Israeli strikes on Syria has further emboldened the occupying regime to press ahead with aggression and brazenly violate international rules and regulations.

“No doubt the United States’ overt and covert support play an important role in emboldening the occupying regime to not only continue occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights, but also to launch aerial and missile attacks on Syria’s state and public infrastructure repeatedly,” the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry highlighted.

Khatibzadeh also condemned Israel’s recent missile strikes on the suburbs of Damascus, saying the regime’s military is acting as the air force of terrorist groups wreaking havoc inside Syria.

He said Israel launches attacks whenever the Syrian army scores a victory against terror outfits.

The senior Iranian official also underlined the need for a strong response to Israel’s acts of aggression both on the battle field and at the international level.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Canada has been one of those countries which has always been boasting its defense of human rights issue and every time the country jumps to meddle in the domestic affairs of other countries after any incident but it has been unable to observe human rights standards on its own lands.

The country in recent months have faced several challenges which have questioned capability of it in handling the human rights issues but when it comes to other countries, it acts more Catholic than Pope.

First in November 2021, an Indigenous community said it found evidence that 215 children were buried on the grounds of a British Columbia school, one of the many in Canada set up to forcibly assimilate them.

For decades, most Indigenous children in Canada were taken from their families and forced into boarding schools. A large number never returned home, their families given only vague explanations, or none at all.

But the Canadian officials and Judiciary have been indifferent and passive towards this kind of behavior against the indigenous people. Suppose such an incident happens in an Asian or African country like Iran or Sudan. Like the Ukrainian plane crash in Tehran. Immediately the Canadian officials jump to condemn the governments under the pretext of defending human rights.

In several occasions Canadian officials have meddled in Iran’s domestic issues while they currently have no diplomatic relation and Canada has currently turned into a haven for corrupts and criminals who are at large and are on the wanted list of the Interpol.

In recent days Canada is challenging with another domestic issue, namely the protests of the truckers, that it has resorted to the force and some so-called anti-human measures against the drivers who are protesting against mandatory COVID vaccination.

On Friday, Canadian police resorted to tough measures to stop protesters and used pepper spray and stun grenades to disperse truckers and other demonstrators who had occupied the downtown core of the capital Ottawa in an effort to bring an end to three weeks of protests against the COVID-19 restrictions.

Police officers clashed with protesters who had gathered in front of the parliament building and the prime minister’s office on Saturday, arresting several people, a day after clearing part of the blockade and making more than 100 arrests.

“We told you to leave. We gave you time to leave. We were slow and methodical, yet you were assaultive and aggressive with officers and the horses,” police said in a statement to the truckers posted on Twitter.

Police also used loud speakers to warn the crowd to disperse or face arrest. They also smashed vehicle windows to arrest people locked inside, while some loud bangs of stun grenades were heard.

Ottawa has been gridlocked by a so-called “Freedom Convoy” consisting of truckers and other motorists for nearly three weeks now. The government has already declared a state of emergency in the city.

What started last month as a movement opposing a Canadian vaccine mandate for cross-border drivers, a requirement mirrored by a U.S. rule, has morphed into a rallying point against the government’s public health measures.

The drivers have occupied areas outside government buildings in the capital city as well as three border crossings with the United States.

If such an incident or protest had happened in Iran or any anti-West country, Canada would have definitely jumped to condemn the governments of those states and would have defended human rights issue while it has apparently ignored it in its own lands.

These western countries usually use human-rights issue as a tool to suppress the governments and increase pressure on them in order that they obey blindly the West but when it is their own turn, they ignore it and try to justify any incident in their own countries.

The world has not yet forgotten several massive protests in the U.S. and France and the brutal reaction of their security forces. They beat and even killed protesters under different pretexts but they have never considered this point that they were ignoring the human-rights principles.

It seems human rights issue has turned into a laughing stuff for the world when the Western countries talk about it because it is the apparent sign of double standard approach to any issue by the West.

Canada by the assistance of its elder brother the U.S. tries to prove the world that it is the cradle of liberty and all human rights principles are observed in this country but in practice, they are unable to observe and even sometimes they ignore it intentionally because it benefits ignoring it.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has always been critical of the Canadian officials for their biased approach regarding human rights issues in Iran because it believes when a country is unable to defend its true national (indigenous) rights and meddle biasedly in the domestic affairs of other nations, it is not in a position to preach other countries or boast of being a human-right defender.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian human rights chief on Thursday called on Canada to revoke a discriminatory law banning a citizen from her teaching career for wearing a hijab in classroom in the eastern province of Quebec.

Fatemeh Anvari, a third-grade Canadian teacher in the town of Chelsea, was told earlier this month that she would no longer be allowed to run her classes since wearing headscarves was in contravention of Bill 21, a law passed in 2019, Press TV reported on Thursday.

The dismissal sparked widespread condemnation of the controversial law in Quebec, with critics stressing that the law unfairly targets ethnic minorities under the pretext of secularism.

“Fatemeh Anvari, a Grade 3 teacher at Chelsea Elementary School, Quebec, was told she could no longer continue in her role because her hijab ran afoul of Que’s Bill 21.

Parents, students and other community members rallied to protest against Anvari’s removal and to support her,” tweeted Kazem Gharibabadi, secretary-general of Iran’s Human Rights Office.

“We call on the Canadian federal government to intervene in the case and support those Quebecers that are fighting this discriminatory law through its annulment,” he added.

The 2019 bill has barred public servants in Canada, including police officers, lawyers, judges and teachers, from publicly wearing religious symbols while carrying out their work.

The law affects such items as turbans, kippahs, hijabs and crosses, but has an outsized impact mainly on Muslim women in the eastern province, where 74.5% of teachers are female.

“This is not about my article of clothing. This is a bigger issue … I don’t want this to be a personal thing because that won’t do any good to anyone,” Anvari told Canada’s CTV News. “I want this to be something in which we all think about how big decisions affect other lives.”

Dismissing Anvari has prompted protests at her school, where students and staff put up green ribbons and posters in support of her.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has so far refused to intervene in the case, claiming that he does not want to create a fight between Quebec and the federal government.

English-language schools in the province have fought the law and recently lost a court challenge preventing the bill from going into effect.

The Canadian government has a long history of violating the rights of ethnic and religious minorities, following in the footsteps of Europeans in racial discrimination and dissemination of Islamophobia.

Canadian Muslims have on numerous occasions held gatherings across the country to press Ottawa to address the issue of Islamophobia amid surging attacks against Muslims and Islamic places of worship over the years.

Canada is already reeling from scandalous revelations about the discovery of thousands of unmarked graves, many believed to be of indigenous children, at the sites of former Church-run residential schools in the country.

Canada’s residential school system forcibly separated more than 150,000 First Nations children from their families between 1831 and 1996. Many of the children separated from their homes by the church’s school system were subjected to abuse, rape, and malnutrition.
