Global anxiety that not enough is being done on climate change has focused on Brazil since August when it was revealed that fires in the Amazon have surged to their highest level since 2010.

Environmentalists blame right-wing Bolsonaro’s policies favoring development over environmental protections for that and rising deforestation.

“The policy of the Bolsonaro government is the policy of environmental destruction and deepening the climate crisis … This is why we’re on strike,” said Marcela Pimentel Miranda, an organizer for Youth for Climate’s affiliate in Brasilia, which is helping to organize the protests.

On Twitter, Brazilians tweeted #EleNao and #ForaSalles, calls to reject Bolsonaro and oust Environment Minister Ricardo Salles. Protesters criticized and mocked the two leaders with signs and costumes.

Salles told Reuters on Thursday that the majority of the Amazon remains intact, showing that Brazil is doing an “excellent job” to preserve the environment. On Friday, Bolsonaro authorized the military to continue firefighting efforts in the Amazon for another month.

The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest, 60% of which lies in Brazil, and absorbs vast amount of greenhouse gases.

Salles acknowledged the existence of man-made climate change and said protesters are right to be concerned about the future.

“I have children and I am concerned about their future too,” he said in an interview.

The demonstrations in major Brazilian cities are among thousands of protests in a global “climate strike” ahead of next week’s UN Climate Action Summit and New York Climate Week, where political, business and civil society leaders will gather to discuss the issue.

“I am going to New York to show the world that Bolsonaro’s policies do not represent Brazil, there are other views,” congresswoman Tabata Amaral, 25, a member of a new generation of Brazilian politicians, said by telephone.

Small protests in the morning gave way to major demonstrations with hundreds gathering in Rio and Brasilia, while more than two thousand amassed in downtown Sao Paulo.

A few dozen people, mostly students, gathered on the steps Rio’s state assembly behind a banner reading “climate justice.”

“For us to have a livable planet and future, air to breath, food and water, we need to solve this problem now,” said Julia Waddington, one of the protesters.

During the meeting held Tuesday in Brasilia, Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif called for expansion of economic ties and reaching a balance in trade transactions between the two countries. He also deemed cooperation in energy, transit, agriculture and advanced technologies ‘complementary’ due to the two countries’ current progress.

Zarif also stressed the need for removing banking obstacles. The use of national currencies, activation of Brazil’s credit line for Iran, conducting joint projects on new technologies such as nanotechnology, biotechnology and aviation, were among other topics of discussion raised by Zarif at the meeting.

The Iranian diplomat further thanked the Brazilian government for its support of Iran’s right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, calling for the continuation of political talks between the two sides.

President Michel Temer, for his part, voiced Brazil’s keen interest in expanding relations with Iran and developing cooperation on advanced technologies, and called for exchanging delegations and increasing contacts between the two sides.

He stressed that Brazil has no issue with Iran’s development of peaceful nuclear activities, voicing his country’s support for Iran’s nuclear program.

He also welcomed cooperation with Iran in oil and gas sector, saying that the exchange of politico-economic delegations between the two countries would further cement bilateral relations.

TEHRAN- Pumpkin toadlets, found on the leaf litter of Brazil’s Atlantic forest, are among the smallest frogs in the world. Scientists have now discovered that two species of these tiny orange frogs cannot hear the sound of their own calls.

An international team from Brazil, Denmark and the UK, discovered that two species of pumpkin toadlets cannot hear the sound of their own calls.

This is a unique case in the animal kingdom of a communication signal persisting even after the target audience has lost the ability to detect it.

“We have never seen this before: These frogs make sounds that they cannot hear themselves,” Jakob Christensen-Dalsgaard from the University of Southern Denmark said.

The findings have been confirmed by anatomical studies at Cambridge University, UK, showing that the part of the ear responsible for high-frequency hearing is vestigial in these species.

Most male frogs call to signal their presence to the opposite sex and find a mate, but this is costly: it could attract predators and parasites, and it uses up energy and time.

Because these tiny frogs are brightly colored, diurnal and known to use visual signals, the researchers hypothesize that visual communication has replaced acoustic communication.

The movement of the throat when males are calling could constitute a visual signal, in which case the call itself would represent a by-product of the true signaling behavior.

Like many brightly-colored tropical frogs, pumpkin toadlets are highly toxic, which may lower the risk of predation when they are calling.

The article, whose materials have been provided by University of Southern Denmark, was published in the Science Daily.
