Iran and Brazil Aim to Strengthen Trade Through Specialized Committees

TEHRAN (Iran News) Ameryan emphasized that the establishment of active specialized committees, including those focused on agriculture, transportation, banking, and currency, could allow technical and operational issues to be resolved at the expert level, reducing the need for high-level governmental intervention. “If challenges are addressed efficiently within these committees, there may be no necessity to wait for full commission sessions or changes in government to advance bilateral cooperation,” he stated.

Highlighting the historical significance of trade ties, Ameryan pointed out that during Ambassador Ghorabi’s tenure, trade between Iran and Brazil reached approximately $1.3 billion. Despite regional and international fluctuations, trade has maintained a substantial role, with Brazil proving especially supportive during periods of international sanctions, providing key logistical assistance through ports and maritime transport for Iranian goods.

One of the most promising avenues for bilateral cooperation, Ameryan said, is overseas cultivation. Proposals in Brazil have offered up to one million hectares of land to Iranian investors, with 15–20% of investment capital provided by the Iranian side and the remainder financed through long-term loans spanning 15–20 years with interest rates of 5–6%. High productivity levels, combined with Brazil’s favorable climate and rainfall patterns, allow multiple harvests annually—up to five crops in two years for products such as corn or rice in some regions—making these projects economically viable and attractive for investors.

Despite these opportunities, currency restrictions and Central Bank regulations present significant challenges. Iranian investors face strict limitations when transferring capital abroad or using export revenues for overseas investments. Ameryan stressed that revising these regulations could unlock substantial investment potential and facilitate broader engagement in foreign agricultural projects.

Another persistent issue is the repatriation of export earnings. Exporters, including those of carpets and other goods, are obligated to return foreign currency within three months, a process often delayed by banking and trade procedures. These delays can prevent exporters from accessing foreign exchange allocations on time, limiting their ability to reinvest or expand operations, and further complicating trade with Brazil.

Former Ambassador Hossein Ghorabi highlighted Brazil’s continued importance as a strategic trading partner for Iran. He noted that Brazil currently accounts for approximately 7–8% of Iran’s total foreign trade, equivalent to nearly $8 billion of Iran’s $50 billion total foreign trade. He emphasized that activating specialized committees under the Iran-Brazil Joint Commission, particularly in agriculture, could facilitate tangible progress without waiting for full commission-level sessions.

Ghorabi further highlighted the unique governance structure in Brazil, where agricultural execution is largely managed at the state rather than the federal level. This decentralization necessitates engagement with state authorities and governors, who hold substantial executive powers, for the successful implementation of projects. As a result, interactions solely with the central government are insufficient to advance agricultural initiatives effectively.

In terms of export opportunities, petrochemical products remain a key sector. Currently, Iran exports approximately 1.8 million tons of petrochemicals to Brazil annually, although Brazil has the capacity to absorb nearly three million tons. Despite the growth potential, exports have largely stagnated in recent years. Ghorabi suggested that negotiating preferential or tariff agreements with Brazil could improve Iran’s market share and competitiveness. He cited China’s experience, where trade with Brazil increased from $3 billion to $170 billion over 25 years, as a model for potential expansion.

The meeting also reviewed the structure of the Iran-Brazil Joint Commission, which includes five main working groups: trade, industry and mining, finance and insurance, energy (including water, electricity, oil, gas, and petrochemicals), agriculture, and technology and education. These committees focus on practical objectives, such as improving air and maritime transportation, facilitating barter and oil-to-chemical exchanges, promoting overseas cultivation, and ensuring access to key agricultural inputs. The Planning and Budget Organization stressed the importance of increasing private-sector participation in these efforts, with government institutions taking on a supportive rather than directive role.

Alireza Pirouzan, head of the Americas Department at Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, noted the limitations of relying on international platforms such as BRICS, describing it as an alliance rather than a fully coordinated organization. Recent disagreements between Russia and South Africa, he said, illustrate the instability of expectations in such frameworks, underscoring the need for strong bilateral mechanisms to manage trade and investment efficiently.

Overall, the meeting emphasized that overcoming internal regulatory, banking, and currency barriers is crucial to unlocking the full potential of Iran-Brazil trade. Activating specialized committees and promoting state-level collaboration in Brazil could enable both nations to expand trade volumes, improve investment opportunities, and create a more sustainable framework for long-term economic cooperation.

TEHRAN (Iran News) In a meeting with Koulivand, Fernandes said, “During my trip to several countries, including Iran, with the aim of strengthening interactions and exchanging views on joint cooperation in this council, I would like to meet and talk with the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society as the co-chair of the health working group, and I am very pleased with this opportunity.”

He added: “We are trying to carry out pivotal actions in the field of the BRICS Civil Council with the participation of member countries by sharing capacities and experiences in various fields. The role of the Iranian Red Crescent, with its very strong potential and extensive experience in implementing humanitarian actions at the national and international levels, will certainly be very effective.” “Brazil”

Fernandes reiterated that the solutions of the head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society in the discussion of the BRICS member countries’ attention to the issue of lifting sanctions, based on extensive experience, is an issue that, in the current global situation, should be a turning point for the member countries involved in sanctions.

Iran, Brazil Hold Third Round of Talks to Boost Agricultural Cooperation

TEHRAN (Iran News) The third webinar meeting of the Joint Agricultural Cooperation Committee between Iran and Brazil (specifically Brazil’s Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, MAPA) took place. The discussions, hosted by Iran’s Veterinary Organization, focused on sanitary quarantine measures for raw animal products (both imported and exported), sanitary quarantines for agricultural and horticultural products between the two nations, and bilateral scientific and technological collaboration.

Alireza Rafieipour, head of Iran’s Veterinary Organization, emphasized during the meeting that cooperation between Iran and Brazil in the agricultural sector would undoubtedly facilitate and accelerate commercial ties, adherence to technical and sanitary standards, quarantine protocols, and bilateral scientific endeavors. He expressed hope that these efforts would lead to an improved trade balance and expanded cooperation between the two countries.

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad highlighted the exchange of protein-based products facilitated by the veterinary services of both nations. He noted that Iran has historically imported meat and livestock feed from Brazil, as well as white poultry meat in the past. However, he stressed the need for measures to enable the export of Iranian horticultural products—such as apples, kiwis, raisins, and saffron—to Brazil in return.

Expressing optimism about achieving a positive trade balance, Rafieipour outlined key areas for veterinary collaboration, including pharmaceuticals, biological materials, and laboratory work through training programs, leveraging Iran’s advanced veterinary expertise. He also called for cooperation in vaccine research and development, testing and evaluation, standardization, biotechnology, and the joint production of high-tech medicines under licensing agreements. Additionally, he emphasized the need to align raw animal product standards with national, regional, and World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) guidelines, suggesting that deploying veterinary experts from both countries could play a pivotal role.

Rafieipour also addressed global challenges, noting that antimicrobial resistance poses a significant threat to combating infectious diseases. He underscored the importance of joint efforts in producing herbal medicines to mitigate this issue.

The webinar was attended by Rafieipour, representing Iran’s Minister of Agriculture Jihad, alongside Brazil’s agricultural attaché in Iran, Brazil’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Iranian representatives from the embassy in Brazil, and delegates from Iran’s TAT Organization, Plant Protection Organization, horticulture and agriculture sectors, the Jihad Independence Institute, and various deputy offices of the Veterinary Organization.

This third round of negotiations reflects a continued commitment to deepening agricultural ties between Iran and Brazil, with both nations seeking to strengthen their economic and scientific partnership.

The two countries have high potential and capacities to boost their trade and economic ties, he added.

Currently, Iran exports about $100 million of products to Brazil and imports $7.6 billion of products from this South American country, he maintained.

An obstacle to the development of economic relations between the two countries is the problem of money transfer and banking relations, which the governments of Iran and Brazil must eliminate as soon as possible, the official stressed.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Amerian pointed to Iran’s tourism capacities and said as few Brazilian tourists visit Iran, responsible officials should take necessary measures to introduce the country’s tourism attractions to Brazilian travelers.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Chairman of Iran-Brazil Joint Chamber of Commerce says two Iranian banks will open soon their branches in Brazil while the first trade delegation of Iran will be dispatched to Brazil by the yearend.

Speaking in the first brainstorming meeting between state and private sector managers as well as representatives of banks, Chairman of Iran-Brazil Joint Chamber of Commerce Mr. Seyed Fakhreddin Amerian said that branches of two Iranian banks will be set up in Brazil, adding that the first trade and economic delegation of the country will be sent to the South American country in the near future to bolster bilateral trade.

Stressing the capacities for promoting exports of Iranian products to Brazil, Amerian said, “With the deployment of marketing structures, suitable ways will be paved for the entry of competent Iranian companies and economic activists to the lucrative Brazilian market.”

He pointed to the dispatch of Iranian trade and economic delegation to Brazil in the second half of the current year and added that economic cooperation with Brazil will be further strengthened after years of hiatus. He said that the delegation will be dispatched to Sao Paulo of Brazil and a big and important negotiation between businessmen of the two countries will happen after years.

In addition, a number of Iranian banks will establish branch offices in Brasilia, which will help traders to set up safe banking relations, Amerian stated.

A specialized and expert-level meeting was held recently between senior directors of public and private sectors, banks, chairmen of specialized commissions of the Iran-Brazil Joint Chamber of Commerce aimed at boosting synergy and spurring exports between Iran and Brazil concurrent with the inauguration of a trade center in this South American country.

Meanwhile in the meeting, Iran’s Ambassador to Brazil Hossein Gharibi said that opening of the trade center of Iran in Brazil is one of the best economic opportunities for the presence of Iranians in Brazil’s market, adding that one of the important tasks of this center is to study Brazil’s market and then paving the ground for the presence of Iranians in the exhibitions in Brazil because exhibition in Brazil is very important and he expects the relation with Brazil to broaden in different fields.

Gharibi also pointed to the historic record in the trade relation between Iran and Brazil which was set last year, noting that the total trade volume of Iran and Brazil was $6.5b in 2021 and some 1.8m tons of urea was exported to Brazil and if the urea market was stable, the condition would have become much better. He noted that the trade volume between Iran and Brazil was around $5b in 2020 and both countries can increase the figure to $10b, reiterating that the figure of trade volume is for the direct trade without involvement of the third party country.

Gharibi also said that diversifying trade with Brazil is one of the main goals, reiterating that Iran wants to have colorful presence in exhibitions in Brazil and it wants to have a pavilion in the upcoming exhibition in north Brazil.

He added that Saudi Arabia is the main oil supplier to Brazil but Iran has better condition in exporting oil products to Brazil and this will be strengthened.

He also blamed lack of direct shipping line to Brazil as one of the major challenges in way of Iran’s exports to Brazil, adding that currently one can use the capacity of Iran’s direct shipping line to Venezuela.
