In a joint press conference after the meeting, Rahmani Fazli said that cooperation between Iran and Iraq has been increasing since the visit of President Rouhani to Iraq  during which the two sides agreed to step up cooperation on various fields including border issues, security, and bilateral trade as well as the issue of the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

The Iranian minister added that in cooperation with the Iraqi Ministry of Interior, the Iranian Interior Ministry will reopen the Khosravi border and cancel visas for citizens of both sides during Arbaeen later this Summer.

He added that the level of facilities and services provided to the pilgrims will increase as well.

He went on to add that during today’s meeting, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase border cooperation including cooperation between the police forces of the two countries during Arbaeen.

Rahmani Fazli further expressed hope that “the MoU will be a great step towards enhancing cooperation, strengthening relations and improving the situation inside both Iran and Iraq and good cooperation between the two countries’ border provinces.”

Customs office in Kurdistan’s Bashmaq border is busy active in the field of transiting, importing, exporting goods and also passenger’s affairs.

He put the volume of domestic transit of goods from Bashmaq border in the first three months of the current year (March 21 – June 21) at 13,32 tons, valued at $3,595,953.

In addition, 156,771 tons of goods, valued at $87,128,892, were exported from Bashmaq border crossing in the same period, Rahmanipour stressed.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the director general pointed to the volume of goods transited from this province and said, “statistics showed that total volume of goods transited from this province has decreased 15 percent in terms of weight as compared to the last year’s corresponding period.”

Kurdistan province customs office has active branches in Sanandaj, Bashmaq border in Marivan, Siranband border crossing in Baneh which are offering quality customs services to economic activists and entrepreneurs, Director General of Kurdistan province Customs Office Bakhtiar Rahmanipour added.

Khoy governor said that in the meetings with the Turkish side over the past two days, they had discussed and reached good mutual understandings of cooperation in the fight against terrorism, organized crime, the fight against the trafficking of goods, livestock and narcotics, and the prevention of illegal immigration at the borders and the development of livelihood of people living on each side of the borders.

Abedi also said that developing border trade in line with directions of the two countries’ high-ranking officials were among decisions made at these meetings.

Mehmet Emin Bilmez, for his part, was positive about the results of the meetings with the Iranian side, saying that there are good relations between Van and Khoy.

The Van governor also said in the meetings the two sides had reached very good agreements to fight against terrorist groups and smuggling of goods and human trafficking.

Furthermore, on the sidelines of the meeting, the Iranian consulate general to Erzurum Soltanzadeh attached great importance to the security sub-committee, saying that forming such sub-committees can further develop relations between border provinces of the two countries.

The Turkish delegations also visited museums in Khoy during the two-day visit to Iran.
