Iran, Pakistan Weigh Plans to Step Up Border Security

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

TEHRAN – Highest-ranking military commanders from Iran and Pakistan have discussed ways to enhance security at the common border and prevent terrorist attacks.

In a telephone conversation on Monday evening, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri and Chief of the Army Staff of Pakistan General Qamar Javed Bajwa talked about the plans to intensify security along the common border.

The top Iranian commander stressed in the conversation that it is necessary for the two Muslim neighbours to broaden security measures along the common border to prevent the law-breaking terrorist groups and the common enemies of the two nations from disrupting security at the border.

Major General Baqeri also hailed the growing trend in the brotherly ties between the armed forces of Iran and Pakistan, expressing the Islamic Republic’s readiness to promote “defense-economic cooperation” with the neighboring state.

The top commander also called on the Pakistani Army officials to take decisive action for the release of three Iranian border guards who have been held hostage by the so-called Jaish-ul-Adl terrorist group.

For his part, General Qamar Javed Bajwa gave a brief report on Pakistan’s measures to construct barriers along the common border with Iran.

He also called for closer military interaction with Iran and the exchange of experts to ensure and maintain the border security and prevent the terrorist activities that upset security at the border areas.

Pakistan and Iran share over 900km-long border, which is infested with criminal gangs, militants and drug traffickers. Terrorist groups operating along the border have in the past carried out several attacks. Therefore, border security has for long remained a major irritant in bilateral ties. The terrorist groups based near the border have existed because of deep mistrust between the two countries.

The two neighbors have, however, over the past few years cooperated extensively in improving border security by undertaking several measures, including deployment of additional troops.

Gen Bajwa had in his maiden visit to Iran in 2017 as the army chief called the Pakistan-Iran border the “border of peace and friendship” and vowed closer cooperation with Tehran to ensure security in the region.

Pakistan and Iran had during Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to Tehran in April last year agreed to the setting up of a joint rapid reaction force for curbing activities of terrorist groups along the porous border.

In April 2019, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan agreed to set up a joint rapid reaction unit along the common border to combat terrorism.

Iranian military forces along the southeastern border areas are frequently attacked by terrorist groups coming from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Addressing a joint press conference in Tehran on Monday, President Hassan Rouhani and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan stressed the need for improving cooperation in countering terrorism and improving trade relations, according to Global Village Space news website.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said “four decades of war in Afghanistan had affected Pakistan and Iran. Pakistan hosted four million Afghan refugees at one point. I know, Iran has three million refugees.”

Khan also said “we would not have needed a translator in the past. We all used to speak Persian. The court language for 600 years in the Indian subcontinent was Persian.”

The prime minister said “I came here [Iran] in 1972. I saw a big difference between the rich and the poor, a big cultural difference.” Today, he said, “Iran has become a more egalitarian society that is what the revolution has done.”

“That is what we want to do in Naya Pakistan – we want to reduce the difference between the rich and the poor,” he said.

Elsewhere, the Pakistani prime minister said “and the most important reason I am here is because I felt that the issue of terrorism was going to create differences between our countries, so it was important for use to resolve this issue.”

He also praised the Pakistan security agencies for tackling the issue of terrorism in Pakistan. “We are much luckier than Afghanistan in overcoming terrorism,” Imran Khan said.

“We have come to the conclusion we will not allow any militant group to operate from Pakistan,” the prime minister said. It is a decision made after political consensus from within without any outside pressure, he stated.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said “just a few days back we have 14 of our security personnel killed in Balochistan.” “I know Iran has suffered from terrorism,” he added. Our security chief will be sitting with his counterpart and discussing this issue and this will build confidence between us, the prime minister said.

Prime Minister Imran said, four decades of war in Afghanistan had affected Pakistan and Iran. Pakistan hosted four million Afghan refugees at one point. I know, Iran has three million refugees. He said that “It is in the interest of both our countries that there is peace in Afghanistan.”

The whole subcontinent will benefit once the issue is settled. This will help Iran in trade too, the prime minister said. He said justice will bring peace, not force.

“People of Afghanistan have suffered for four decades,” he said. PM said that “Once there is peace there will be more trade between Pakistan and Iran and this will help us raise the standard of living of our people.”

On the future of Iran-Pakistan cooperation, Khan said “we discussed ways of improving trade and cooperation between the two countries.” He said that Iran had one of the best primary healthcare system in the world. We have brought our newly appointed health minister to learn from the Iranian experience, PM said.

Imran said, “We can mutually benefit from cooperation in science and technology. We have very limited amount of trade at the moment.” “Thank you, Mr President, for the hospitality and the way the talks have gone,” he said.

President Rouhani made the remark in a joint press conference with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday in Tehran.

Noting that a “new step” has been taken in the promotion of the two countries’ relations, Rouhani said Tehran and Islamabad are fully resolved to this cause, and stress that no third country will ever be able to undermine the close and amicable ties between the two sides.

Rouhani said he had conferred on border security with the Pakistani PM at a meeting prior to the press conference, saying “we both agreed to expand security cooperation between the two countries, and form a joint rapid reaction force on shared borders to counter terrorism.”

Elsewhere, the Iranian president said the country is ready to meet Pakistan’s oil and gas needs, calling on Pakistan to complete the gas pipeline project on their own end.

The US hostile and wrong measures in the region, regarding the Jerusalem al-Quds, Golan Heights, and its anti-IRGC move were also discussed with the Pakistani side, Rouhani added.

Rouhani then noted that Prime Minister Khan has extended an invitation to him for an official visit, voicing hope that the visit would take place at an appropriate time in the future.

On the sidelines of the press conference, the two sides signed an MoU on healthcare cooperation.
