TEHRAN (Iran News) – Three civilians were killed and four others wounded in a bomb attack in Mehtarlam city, capital of Afghanistan eastern Laghman province on Saturday, a provincial government spokesman confirmed.

“The blast occurred after an improvised explosive device (IED) attached to a motorcycle was detonated roughly at midday along a road near the provincial prison building,” spokesman Assadullah Dawlatzai told Xinhua.

The obvious target of the blast was Noor Mohammad, director of the provincial prison directorate, who sustained injuries in the explosion, the official said.

“The killed civilians were people who were aboard a vehicle passing-by the area,” the spokesman added.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

The blast came as the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Monday announced that more than 500 civilians were killed and 760 others wounded due to fighting in the country during the first three months this year.

It urged the government and anti-government elements to do more to protect civilians from harm, especially in view of the looming threat posed to all Afghans by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Parliamentary official Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Sun. that US-backed terrorists in Syria are committing atrocities in the Arab country with the help of weapons gifted to them by the White House.

“The US-backed terrorists and armed groups in Syria claim one day to wish to be part of the government and sit down at the table for political talks, and the next day, they are back to bombarding the innocent Syrian people with weapons gifted to them by the White House,” Parliament Speaker Special Aide in International Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said in a tweet on Sunday.

“This is a blatant example of double standards, the US policy of spreading enmity and toying with terrorism at the negotiating table,” he added.

Amir-Abdollahian was referring to the renewed violence in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta, an area where militants have been using to launch mortar attacks on the Syrian capital Damascus, causing a critical humanitarian situation. Iranian deputy FM Araghchi said Friday that Iran was working closely with Syria in order to bring calm back to this area.

Meanwhile, Russia has called for a UN Security Council meeting to be held on the situation in Eastern Ghouta.

Eastern Ghouta is included in a deal between Turkey, Russia and Iran to establish de-escalation zones in Syria.

Twin car bombings and subsequent gunfire has left at least 27 people dead and 20 others wounded in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, medical workers said.

A loud explosion reportedly took place on Friday, followed by a second blast and sustained gunfire which broke out near the president’s residence. The second blast took place beside a popular hotel, Al Jazeera reported.

The Aamin Ambulance service, which confirmed the death toll, transported victims to the hospital.

The armed group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack.

“As far as we know, there has been one blast beside the presidential palace, and another close to a popular hotel,” Major Mohamed Ahmed, a police officer, told local media.

AAMIN Ambulance transported Victims to Hospital caused car explosion near Fiyad Hotel the more information will notes as soon as possible pic.twitter.com/L4rTgi20Ek — Aamin Ambulance (@AaminAmbulance) February 23, 2018.

The attack comes a day after the Somali government had issued a “terror warning” in the capital.

The explosions shattered a months-long period of calm in Mogadishu, which is often the target of attacks by al-Shabab.

In December, 18 police officers were killed when an al-Shabab fighter blew himself up inside the country’s main police academy in Mogadishu.

The capital was also the target of a truck bombing in October that killed 512 people in the deadliest attack in Somalia’s history. The Somali government blamed that blast on the al-Qaeda linked al-Shabab.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi issued a statement on Monday in condemnation of today’s terrorist attacks in Baghdad.

He voiced Iran’s solidarity and condolences to the government and nation of Iraq, particularly the families of the victims, and stressed on the continuous of Iran’s support for the Arab country in the fight against extremist ideologies of foreign-backed takfiri-terrorist groups.

The Monday twin suicide bombing targeted Tayran Square, a commercial area of Baghdad, and killed at least 38 people and wounded 105 others. No group has so far claimed responsibility, although the attacks bear the hallmark of ISIL. Death toll is feared to rise as the square is usually crowded with laborers seeking work.

Although Iraq has recently pronounced victory over ISIL by ousting the group across the country, scattered attacks are still expected to be carried out by the terrorists.

TEHRAN- Hamas’ security chief in the Gaza Strip was wounded in a car bombing on Friday in what the Palestinian resistance movement called a failed assassination attempt.

The attack came as rival factions are trying to implement a new agreement meant to end a 10-year rift that has effectively split the Palestinian territories between Hamas in Gaza and the more mainstream Fatah in the occupied West Bank.

Tawfeeq Abu Naeem, Hamas’ head of security in Gaza and a strong supporter of the reconciliation deal, was lightly wounded when his car exploded outside a mosque, Hamas said in a statement.

Hamas, which has been quick to blame Israel for similar attacks in the past, did not say who it believed was behind the bombing, suggesting it could also be the work of a radical Salafi group that opposes the Palestinian rapprochement, Reuters reported.

Hamas has stepped up a security campaign against Salafi groups and recently detained a senior operative. Hamas also has improved ties with Egypt, which is battling extremist groups across the border in the Sinai peninsula.
