TEHRAN (Iran News) – Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton is planning to publish his book detailing his time in the West Wing later this month, even if the White House does not give publication approval, a source familiar with the negotiations said.

“The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir” is scheduled to be released on June 23, and, as of now, the White House has not formally signed off on it, the source said. Bolton has already scheduled network interviews to promote the book, a separate source told CNN. A spokesperson for Bolton declined to comment.

The Washington Post was the first to report the details of Bolton’s plan. CNN has contacted the book’s publisher, Simon & Schuster, for comment.

News of Bolton’s plans to move forward follow numerous delays as his lawyers have been embroiled in a battle with the White House over the contents. The Trump administration has raised concerns about the publication of classified information that it says is protected by executive privilege.

Earlier this year, The New York Times reported that Bolton, in his unpublished manuscript, alleged that President Donald Trump directed him to help with his pressure campaign to get damaging information on Democrats from Ukraine.

According to the Times, he also alleged that Trump didn’t want to lift a hold on military aid to Ukraine until officials there complied with the request. Bolton’s lawyers have not denied the substance of the New York Times reports but have condemned the leaks behind it.

The President, vice president, and some agency heads designated by the President have broad authority over classifying or declassifying information.

CNN previously reported that Bolton’s team has prepared for the possibility that the administration may try to retroactively classify some of the material in his book — a measure that is uncommon, but not unheard of, due to loopholes in executive order 13526.

“The President is really empowered by the words in this executive authority,” said J. William Leonard, the former director of the information security office which overseas executive branch implementation of the executive order — and former deputy secretary of defense.

“It’s an authority that can be abused and it can weaken the classification system,” Leonard said. “They abuse it to keep the information out of the hands of adversaries that could potentially use the information to harm the country.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – In his first public comments since the conclusion of US President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, former national security director John Bolton suggested it’s unfair that the president can tweet about him, but he can’t talk publicly about his time in the White House.

During an appearance at Duke University Monday night, Bolton was asked about a Trump tweet saying he was tougher on Venezuela than his former adviser. In response, Bolton referenced his upcoming book, saying, “I say things in the manuscript about what he said to me. I hope they become public someday.”

“He tweets but I can’t talk about it,” Bolton added. “How fair is that?”

Bolton’s comments come as one of his aides teold NBC News that it’s unclear if his book about his time in the Trump White House — “The Room Where It happened” — will publish next month as planned. The aide said a White House national security review of the manuscript could push back the book’s March 17 publication date.

Bolton himself addressed the review Monday, saying, “I hope it’s not suppressed.”

“I didn’t think I was obligated to go through prepublication review. When my first book came out I didn’t. But we’re in the process now,” he said, adding, “and for now I’m going to let it go.”

He and the White House have been at odds for nearly two months over publication of the book. The White House has said it includes classified information. But Bolton, who also wrote a book about his time in the administration of President George W. Bush as the US ambassador to the United Nations, has maintained that there is nothing classified in his book.

When Bolton submitted his book to the White House for a standard national security review in December, his attorney, Charles Cooper, wrote in a letter that he was not required to do so but had gone ahead out of an abundance of caution.

After parts of the book leaked to the media, Bolton’s team said the White House review process had been corrupted.

“We continue to believe that the manuscript contains no legitimately classified material,” Sarah Tinsley, a senior adviser to Bolton, recently said in a statement. She expressed concern that the review process “is more about suppressing Ambassador Bolton’s book than about classification issues.”

One possibility is that the White House will retroactively classify information in the book or has already done so.

Bolton, a longtime fixture in the Republican Party, recently became a target for Trump and his allies following revelations that he would directly link the president to the White House’s pressure campaign on Ukraine. The New York Times has reported that Bolton writes in his book that Trump sought his help with the Ukraine campaign.

Bolton offered to testify in the president’s impeachment trial, where he would have provided a firsthand account of Trump’s decision to withhold US aid to Ukraine in exchange for its government’s announcement of an investigation into his political rivals. But Senate Republicans rejected the idea and acquitted Trump of charges that he abused the power of his office by pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to announce a corruption investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter.

Biden is running in the Democratic primary to challenge Trump in November.

When asked Monday night whether he agreed with the president that the call with Zelenskiy was “perfect,” Bolton responded, “you’ll love chapter 14.”

Bolton said the Ukraine parts of his book are “the sprinkles on an ice cream sundae,” adding, “we’ll have to see what comes out of the censorship.” He declined to comment further.

Bolton left the White House in September on contentious terms with Trump. He said he resigned, while the president said he was fired. He served 17 months as Trump’s national security adviser.

Bolton is also scheduled to speak Wednesday at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The White House has issued a formal threat to former US national security adviser John Bolton to keep him from publishing his book, “The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir,” sources familiar with the matter said.

In a letter to Bolton’s lawyer, a top official at the National Security Council wrote the unpublished manuscript of Bolton book “appears to contain significant amounts of classified information” and couldn’t be published as written.

The letter, which is dated January 23, said some of the information was classified at the “top secret” level, meaning it “reasonably could be expected to cause exceptionally grave harm to the national security.”

“The manuscript may not be published or otherwise disclosed without the deletion of this classified information,” the letter read, according to CNN.

The White House had no comment. Neither Bolton nor a spokesman for the publisher, Simon & Schuster, responded to a request for comment.

Later Wednesday, Bolton’s attorney Charles Cooper released a follow-up letter that he sent to the National Security Council about the manuscript.

“As you are no doubt aware, the House Managers in the Senate impeachment trial have made clear their intention to seek Ambassador Bolton’s testimony at trial, and although no one yet knows whether the Senate will subpoena him to testify, he is preparing for that possibility,” Cooper wrote in a Friday email to the official at the National Security Council.

“If he is called to testify, it seems certain that he will be asked questions that will elicit much of the information contained in the chapter of his manuscript dealing with his involvement in matters relating to Ukraine. We do not believe that any of that information could reasonably be considered classified, but given that Ambassador Bolton could be called to testify as early as next week, it is imperative that we have the results of your review of that chapter as soon as possible.”

In a statement accompanying the letter, Cooper added that he had “received no response whatever to my urgent request for the NSC’s immediate guidance as to any concerns it may have with respect to the chapter of the manuscript dealing with Ambassador Bolton’s involvement in matters relating to Ukraine.”

The letter comes in the midst of President Donald Trump attacking Bolton on Twitter, and Bolton’s lawyer accusing the White House of corrupting the vetting process for Bolton’s book by sharing the contents of the book with those outside the National Security Council’s Records Management Division.

Trump’s tweets attacking Bolton Wednesday morning suggested he knew the contents of the manuscript.

Reports from The New York Times suggest that Bolton’s book details a time last August when the President directly linked $391 million in security aid to Ukraine with that country’s government launching investigations into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

The President has repeatedly made unfounded and false claims about Joe Biden relating to Ukraine.

The President’s defense attorneys in his Senate impeachment trial have criticized the House impeachment managers for not producing any first-hand witnesses alleging that any quid pro quo came from the president himself.

Bolton has said he would be willing to testify in the Senate trial if subpoenaed. Trump has suggested that he might attempt to assert executive privilege and block Bolton’s testimony, though legal experts say the President’s tweets describing his conversations with Bolton about Ukraine might undermine any such assertion.
