Suspected Boko Haram Members Kill 15 in Cameroon

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Suspected terrorists from Boko Haram killed 15 people and wounded six others in a grenade attack on a camp for displaced people in northern Cameroon on Sunday, a security source and a local official told Reuters.

In the early hours, Boko Haram assailants threw a grenade into a group of sleeping people inside the camp in the village of Nguetchewe in northern Cameroon, said district mayor, Medjeweh Boukar. The camp is home to around 800 people, he said.

The village is located in the district of Mozogo, close to the Nigerian border in the region of Far North.

Boukar was informed by residents that 15 had died. A security official confirmed the attack and the death toll. The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital, they said.

“The attackers arrived with a woman who carried the grenade into the camp,” Boukar said, adding that women and children were among the dead.

Over the past month there have been twenty incursions and attacks by suspected terrorists, Boukar said.

Boko Haram has been fighting for a decade to carve out an authority based in Nigeria.

The terrorist group has killed thousands and displaced millions in northeastern Nigeria.

It has intensified attacks against the military in the last two years, repeatedly carrying out deadly strikes against soldiers.

In recent months, there has been an increase in attacks on civilians blamed on the group.

The decade-long conflict has killed 36,000 people and displaced around two million from their homes in the northeast.

The violence has spread to neighboring Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, prompting a regional military coalition to fight the terrorists.

In June last year, around 300 suspected Boko Haram terrorists swarmed onto an island on Lake Chad in Cameroon’s Far North and killed 24 people, including 16 Cameroonian soldiers stationed at military outposts.

Boko Haram Attacks Army Camp in Niger , Killing 8

According To Iran News, Eight soldiers are dead and three others are missing in northeastern Niger following an attack by Boko Haram on an army camp, the country’s defense minister said Tuesday.

Speaking to media outlets, Issoufou Katambe said Boko Haram terrorists targeted the Chetima Wongou military camp in the Diffa region with a 20-vehicle convoy and heavy weaponry.

Katambe said many of the terrorists were neutralized, Anadolu Agency reported.

The army seized one of the vehicles used by the terrorists and destroyed another and the Multinational Joint Task Force hit the remaining vehicles, which escaped over the border into Nigeria, according to Katambe.

Diffa has been under a state of emergency for the past five years since Boko Haram launched a military campaign in February 2015.

The terror group has had a presence in Nigeria since the early 2000s and has killed more than 20,000 people since 2009. It has also carried out attacks in Cameroon, Chad and Niger since 2015.

At Least 9 Killed in Suspected Boko Haram Attack in NE Nigeria

Military sources who confirmed the attack said it occurred late Wednesday in Aljilati Ngomari village near Maiduguri, the capital of the northern state of Borno and stronghold of the outlawed group.

Four of the victims were killed with bow and arrows while five others were hacked to death with machetes, a military source, who requested anonymity, told Xinhua.

Lukman Rufai, a leader of the government-backed militia group, the Civilian Joint Task Force, said bodies of the victims were, thereafter, dumped in a nearby bush.

“Such silent killing tactics of using the bow and arrows, as well as machetes or knives, were likely deployed by the militants to prevent the people in the community from knowing what was happening at the time of the attack,” said Rufai.

Bodies of the victims were brought back to the village early Thursday, set for burial, he said.

The northeast region of the most populous African country has been destabilized for over a decade by Boko Haram, which kidnapped hundreds of schoolgirls in 2014.

Niger Troops Kill More than 280 Boko Haram Militants

Troops and air strikes have killed more than 280 Boko Haram militants since the Niger government started an operation against the group last week, the defense ministry said.

Boko Haram has attacked Niger, Chad and Cameroon from its base in northeast Nigeria.

Niger’s defense ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that the army mounted a sweep operation against the group last Friday along the southeastern Komadugu River, which separates Niger from Nigeria, Reuters reported.

More than 200 militants were “neutralized” by air strikes and 87 were killed by Nigerien troops on the ground, it said.

In June 2016, more than 30 Nigerien soldiers were killed during a Boko Haram attack on the town of Bosso, prompting Chad to send 2,000 troops to help its West African neighbor counter the militants.

Those troops were withdrawn in October 2017, raising concern about security in the Diffa region.
