TEHRAN (Iran News) –The Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization is ready to create conditions for blood transfusion to help Palestinians in Gaza.

Mostafa Jamali, CEO of the Blood Transfusion Organization, said that many volunteers have registered to donate blood to Gaza, and we are fully prepared to provide and deliver blood and blood products to the oppressed people in this region, IRNA reported.

Iran ready to send humanitarian aid to Gaza

Some 730 billion rials (around $1.5 million) in humanitarian aid was collected from October 9 until November 8 for people in Gaza through a campaign launched by the Iranian Red Crescent Society.

The campaign aimed to raise funds to help the oppressed people of Gaza is still ongoing, ISNA quoted Vahid Salimi, an official with the IRCS, as saying on November 8.

He went on to say, “From the beginning of the official call for the campaign, more than 730 billion rials (almost $1.5 m) have been deposited by people into the official accounts of the Red Crescent Society.”

“Simultaneously, in addition to air cargo, a ship carrying humanitarian aid has been sent to Gaza with the cooperation of the Red Crescent Society of Hormozgan province from Shahid Rajaei port. Other shipments are being loaded in this port,” he added.

On November 7, Iran expressed readiness to provide the people of Gaza with humanitarian aid via Egypt amid a massive humanitarian crisis caused by the Israeli war against the Palestinian enclave.

The announcement was made in a phone conversation between Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry.

Also, on November 3, the IRCS called the International Committee of the Red Cross to facilitate the process of dispatching humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Razieh Alishvandi, the IRCS director for international affairs, met with Vincent Cassard, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Iran.

The International Committee of the Red Cross should seriously intervene in the clear violation of international humanitarian law and condemn the Zionist regime’s airstrikes in the Gaza Strip since it has violated many cases of the four Geneva Conventions, Alishvandi said, IRCS website reported.

Alishvandi stressed, “A safe way should be found to send relief supplies to this country. Iran’s humanitarian shipments should reach the people of Gaza as soon as possible.”

A consignment weighing 20,000 tons is being prepared to be sent to Gaza from Iran, and we request the International Committee of the Red Cross to follow up on obtaining the necessary permits from the Egyptian government to send these shipments, she stated.

“Moreover, the Iranian Red Crescent Society is ready to provide medical services to the wounded and treat them by establishing three mobile hospitals along with sending experienced medical staff to Egypt (Palestine border).”

Blood donation in Iran

The average blood donation rate in Iran is 26 per thousand people which places the country in a good situation among other countries.

According to the World Health Organization, the median blood donation rate in high-income countries is 31.5 donations per 1000 people. This compares with 16.4 donations per 1000 people in upper-middle-income countries, 6.6 donations per 1000 people in lower-middle-income countries, and 5.0 donations per 1000 people in low-income countries.

Of the 118.5 million blood donations collected globally, 40% of these are collected in high-income countries, home to 16% of the world’s population.

In low-income countries, up to 54 % of blood transfusions are given to children under 5 years of age; whereas in high-income countries, the most frequently transfused patient group is over 60 years of age, accounting for up to 76% of all transfusions.

Based on samples of 1000 people, the blood donation rate is 31.5 donations in high-income countries, 16.4 donations in upper-middle-income countries, 6.6 donations in lower-middle-income countries, and 5.0 donations in low-income countries.

In the past Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20, some 2.223 million blood donations were registered across the country, an increase of 9.3 percent compared to the year before.

The average blood donation rate in Eastern Mediterranean member countries is 14.4 per thousand populations, while the rate in Iran is around 25 per thousand, Jamali said in February.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –In the first 11 months of the current Iranian calendar year, which ended on February 19, some two million Iranians donated blood across the country.

A total of 2.5 million people referred to the blood donation centers nationwide over the 11-month period, IRNA quoted the Blood Transfusion Organization spokesman, Abbas Sedaqat, saying on Saturday.

In the aforementioned period, blood donation has increased by 9.5 percent compared to the same period last year, he added.

He went on to say that the highest blood donation growth was recorded in North Khorasan province at 34.7 percent, Ilam province at 21.7 percent, and Lorestan province at 20.8 percent growth, respectively.

Also, people in Tehran donated 10.52 percent more blood in the first eleven months of this year compared to the same period last year, he added.

Donors who successfully donate blood twice or more within 12 months are considered continuous donors.

The average level of blood reserves in the country is 9.6 days, which is an acceptable level, Sedaqat said in January.

“It should be noted that the need for blood and blood products is constant and blood donation should be done continuously.”

With the establishment of the national blood network, we have been able to meet all the needs of medical centers, including more than 900 hospitals that have blood banks, he explained.

“Also, we have raised the standards, before this definition, the average level of blood storage included four to five days, but the level doubled as much as 8 to 9 days, in order to manage blood supply better,” he noted.

Iran is among the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region as a reference in the field of blood donation activities.

While blood donation in 70 countries still depends on replacement or paid donors, Iran is the first country in the region that has enjoyed voluntary blood donation by 100 percent since 2007.

More than 85 percent of all donated blood worldwide is used to produce blood products, while the rate is 65 percent in Eastern Mediterranean countries. Iran ranks among the highest-income countries in terms of converting more than 97 percent of the blood donated by people to plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMP).

Only 55 of 171 countries produce PDMP through the fractionation of plasma collected in the reporting country. A total of 90 countries reported that all PDMPs are imported, 16 countries reported that no PDMP was used during the reporting period, and 10 countries did not respond to the question, according to WHO.

Iran currently has the highest blood donation rate in the Eastern Mediterranean region, so out of 9.9 million blood donation units in this region, more than two million belongs to Iran.

Also, the index of blood donation is 25 per 1,000 populations, while in the member states of the Eastern Mediterranean region, this number is 14.9 per 1000.

There are currently 178 blood donation centers in the country, with Fars, Khorasan Razavi, Khuzestan, Tehran, and Mazandaran provinces having the largest number of blood donation centers, he stated.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Over the first nine months of the current [Iranian calendar] year (started March 21), a total of 1,533,582 people donated blood across the country, Bashir Haji-Beigi, the Blood Transfusion Organization spokesman, has said.

Blood donation over the aforementioned period has increased by over 7 percent compared to the same period last year, he highlighted, IRNA reported on Monday.

Tehran province with more than 246,000 blood donations has the highest rate in the whole country, followed by provinces of Fars, Khorasan Razavi, Isfahan, and Mazandaran, he stated, adding, Semnan, Yazd, Golestan, Qom, and Mazandaran provinces are the top provinces in the rate of participation of regular donors (with a history of blood donation at least twice a year).

Referring to the 4.46 percent share of women in the overall statistics of blood donation in the country, he noted that Lorestan province with about 9 percent share of women blood donation has the highest rate nationwide and Sistan-Baluchestan, Kordestan, Qazvin, Golestan, Markazi, South Khorasan, and North Khorasan are in the next ranks of the top provinces in terms of women’s blood donation index.

Some 223,473 Iranians referred to blood donation centers for the first time during the past 9 months, which is more than 15 percent of the total number of blood donors, he concluded.

Over 2.1m Iranians donate blood per year

Blood donation in Iran has long been done voluntarily as over 2.1 million Iranians donate blood annually, Haji-Beigi said on June 14.

There are currently 178 blood donation centers in the country, with Fars, Khorasan Razavi, Khuzestan, Tehran, and Mazandaran provinces having the largest number of blood donation centers, he stated.

Highest blood donation in Eastern Mediterranean

Also, the index of blood donation is 25 per 1,000 populations, while in the member states of the Eastern Mediterranean region, this number is 14.9 per 1000.

117.4 million blood donations worldwide

According to the World Health Organization, blood transfusion saves millions of lives and improves health, but many patients requiring transfusion do not have timely access to safe blood.

About 117.4 million blood donations are collected worldwide. 42 percent of these are collected in high-income countries, home to 16 percent of the world’s population.

About 12,700 blood centers in 170 countries report collecting a total of 100 million donations. Collections at blood centers vary according to income group. The median annual donations per blood center are 1,300 in the low-income countries, 4,100 in lower-middle-income countries, and 8 500 in upper-middle-income countries, as compared to 23,000 in the high-income countries.

Data about the gender profile of blood donors show that globally 32 percent of blood donations are given by women, although this ranges widely. In 14 of the 119 reporting countries, less than 10 percent of donations are given by female donors.

Moreover, 62 countries collect 100 percent of their blood supply from voluntary, unpaid blood donors. Some 108 million blood donations are collected globally, half of these are in high-income countries. Meanwhile, blood donation by 1 percent of the population can meet a nation’s most basic requirements for blood.

Those people who have injected a coronavirus vaccine can also donate their blood and there are no obstacles in this regard, Bashir Haji-Beigi, the Blood Transfusion Organization spokesman, said on Saturday.

People who have received AstraZeneca and Sputnik vaccines can donate blood 28 days after vaccination, he said, adding, but those who have been injected with Sinopharm, Sinovac, and Barekat vaccines can refer to blood donation centers as soon as their symptoms such as pain, fever, and faintness are removed.

Over the first three months of the current [Iranian calendar] year (started March 21), some 510,000 people donated blood across the country, Haji-Beigi said in July.

Blood donation over the aforementioned period has increased by 15 percent compared to the same period last year, he added.

“During this period, the provinces of Qazvin, Khuzestan, and Khorasan Razavi had the highest growth rate of blood donation in the country.”

He went on to say that the index of regular blood donation in the country was estimated at 57 percent and the highest rate was related to the provinces of Semnan, Yazd, and Bushehr.

A total of 26,504 Iranians donated blood under a national campaign during Tasua and Ashura (the ninth and tenth days of the month of Muharram), Bashir Haji-Beigi, spokesman for the Blood Transfusion Organization announced on Monday.

Launched for forty days since Tasua, the campaign is held annually to elicit people’s participation in providing the country’s need for blood.

Compared to the same period last year, Yazd province with 79 percent growth in blood donation is the top province and then Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari province with 48 percent growth ranks the second, he added.

A total of 90 countries reported that all PDMP are imported, 16 countries reported that no PDMP was used during the reporting period, and 10 countries did not respond to the question, according to WHO.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran currently has the highest blood donation rate in the Eastern Mediterranean region, so that some 2.5 million Iranians refer to blood donation centers across the country annually, Government spokesman Ali Rabiei said on Wednesday.

“It is an obligation for all of us to consider blood donation a social, ethical, and religious duty,” he said, adding that the blood donation rate in Iran is one and a half times the rate in countries with above-average income, IRNA quoted Rabiei as saying.

Last year, Iran Blood Transfusion Organization had predicted an eight-percent decline in blood reserves, while the World Health Organization had forecasted the rate to be 20-30 percent on average for the world, he explained.

Despite the prevalence of COVID-19, blood donation has increased by 40 percent since the beginning of the current [Iranian calendar] year (March 21), compared to the same period last year, Peyman Eshghi, head of Blood Transfusion Organization, said in May.

100% voluntary blood donation in Iran

According to the World Health Organization, about 117.4 million blood donations are collected worldwide. 42 percent of these are collected in high-income countries, home to 16 percent of the world’s population.
