The Turkish leader congratulated opposition candidate Ekrem Imamoglu on Sunday for winning the election according to unofficial results.

Turkey’s AK Party candidate for Istanbul mayor Binali Yıldırım admitted on Sunday his opposition rival Ekrem İmamoğlu was ahead for now, offering his congratulations and saying he hoped İmamoğlu would serve the city well.

Yıldırım, speaking minutes after Turkish broadcasters said Imamoglu had 53.6% of the votes after nearly 95% of the ballots had been opened, said the election showed that Turkey’s democracy was functioning perfectly.

Opposition leader hails “new beginning” for Istanbul

Reacting to early results, İmamoğlu hailed a “new beginning” for Istanbul and said he was ready to work with President Erdoğan to serve the city.

Istanbul voted in Ekrem İmamoğlu of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) on March 31, but the Supreme Electoral Council annulled the vote after the ruling AKP party alleged that there were irregularities.

In March, İmamoğlu won the election in Istanbul by a slim margin of just 24,000 votes in a city of more than 10 million voters. Just 18 days after taking the seat, the governor of Istanbul took over İmamoğlu’s seat as acting mayor.

Who are the candidates?

İmamoğlu was previously mayor in one of Istanbul’s districts. He is supported by the Pro-Kurdish HDP, the Islamist SP and the Good Party, another ultra-nationalist party founded by former members of MHP. İmamoğlu says he will be more transparent and be more cautious on spending.

Yıldırım was Turkey’s last prime minister before the country transitioned to a fully presidential system. He is backed by the ultra-nationalist party MHP. Yıldırım promised Istanbul residents solutions for the heavy traffic.

Between 1994 and 1998, Erdoğan was mayor of Istanbul. Erdoğan has said that the party ruling Istanbul is the party ruling Turkey.

The election will be pivotal in determining the extent of the Erdoğan’s grip on power in the country. Roughly a fifth of Turkey’s population lives in Istanbul.

Polls have closed at 4 pm Central European Time on Sunday.

Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said on Friday that the Asian countries should take step to establish fiscal pacts and expand banking cooperation.

“Now that the U.S. is imposing sanctions on various countries, many countries have considered finding other ways and they are studying fiscal pacts among Asian countries to reach a new criteria,” he told reporters upon arrival in Tehran after attending the summit of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) in Istanbul.

Noting that the APA summit focused on economic cooperation, Larijani said that it was suggested that the governments should take actions to set up fiscal pacts and expand banking cooperation.

Elsewhere, he said Tehran attaches great importance to cooperation between Asian countries in energy sphere.

‘Zionists behind intl. crises’

During his speech at the summit on Thursday, Larijani said the Zionist regime of Israel and some Western countries are the main culprits behind international crises.

The top lawmaker said actions such as waging wars and imposing sanctions have caused crises, led to spread of terrorism, and prevented economic growth in West Asia.

In an indirect reference to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Larijani said the behavior of certain countries in the region have emboldened Washington.

Elsewhere, Larijani said that the Asian countries should maintain their independent identity.

“The Asian countries’ parliaments can definitely provide the grounds for expanding fiscal interaction and also security cooperation,” he suggested.

On the sidelines of the summit, Larijani held a meeting with Chairman of the State Duma International Affairs Committee Leonid Slutsky and called for expanding economic and political ties between Tehran and Moscow.

‘Iran and Turkey are two important economic partners’

In a separate meeting with Binali Yildirim, the speaker of the Grand National Assembly, Larijani said that Iran and Turkey are two important economic partners in the West Asia region.

He noted that economic cooperation should be expanded given the sanctions and economic pressure.

Yildirim said that the U.S. actions which have caused fluctuations in currency price are against international law.

He also called for expanding relations in various areas with Iran.

‘Good model of cooperation’

Larijani also told a press conference on Thursday that Iran-Russia-Turkey-Syria cooperation can be a good model to solve problems in Asia.

This model of cooperation is successful which can be applied in economic, political and security areas, he explained.

He pointed to the US possible request to use Incirlik airbase to attack Iran, he said that his country will not allow US to use its airbase for the possible strike against Iran.

Yildirim emphasized that Turkey will allow its airbase to be used by another country only for fighting against terrorism, so that the US cannot use the airbase to attack any country.

As a military airport, Incirlik Airbase belongs to the Turkish Air Force which is located in Adana, southern Turkey.

The issue of existence of US nuclear bombs within the framework of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Incirlik airbase based in southeast Turkey has been put at the focal attention and criticism of civil activists in Turkey and international community especially after the collapse of Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) and the Cold War.
