TEHRAN (Iran News) The massive explosion, reportedly caused by bunker-buster bombs, wreaked havoc on the densely populated area, which is home to many residents and displaced persons. Rescue teams are working to clear rubble on Al-Mamoun Street, where neighboring buildings have also sustained significant damage, prompting fears that the death toll could climb.

“Rescue teams are working to remove the rubble in Al-Mamoun Street in Basta, where enemy aircraft targeted a residential building, which led to a large number of martyrs and wounded,” Lebanon’s National News Agency stated.

The Israeli army provided no prior evacuation warnings for the attack, which residents described as unprecedented in its intensity.

Hebrew media claimed the strike was a targeted assassination aimed at a “prominent Hezbollah leader,” with speculation online naming Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem or senior official Talal Hamiya as possible targets. However, no official confirmation has been issued.

The Basta strike followed a day of heavy Israeli bombardment in Lebanon, including airstrikes in the southern suburbs of Beirut and in southern cities such as Tyre and Nabatieh, as well as the eastern Bekaa Valley. Reports indicate dozens of families have been killed in these ongoing attacks.

In the aftermath, Israel issued evacuation orders for the Al-Hadath, Choueifat, and Al-Amrousieh neighborhoods in southern Beirut, adding to the tension in the capital.

Meanwhile, Western media reported hints of a possible cease-fire agreement. The New York Times, citing anonymous US officials, suggested that Israel may be more open to a cease-fire in Lebanon than in Gaza due to a reassessment of its military options. However, the latest attacks raise questions about the likelihood of an imminent de-escalation.

Search and rescue efforts in Basta continue amid fears of more casualties beneath the rubble.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. These charges stem from criminal acts during the ongoing war against Gaza and Lebanon, including the use of starvation as a weapon of war.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Beirut has good ties with Iran, Lebanon FM says. The Lebanese foreign minister says that his country has good relations with Iran and is taking steps to strengthen these relations.

Highlighting his country’s relations with the Islamic Republic, Abdullah Bou Habib said, “We have good relations with Iran and we are working to improve it,” the Mehr news agency reported on Monday, quoting Al-Manar.

The Lebanese foreign minister added at the same time Beirut welcomes relations with the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.

“We believe that the talks between Tehran and Riyadh will have a positive impact on Beirut as well.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian visited Lebanon on October 7-8. While in Beirut, he reaffirmed Tehran’s strong support for Lebanon, saying the Islamic Republic is ready to play an active role in promoting Lebanon’s development projects.

During the trip, Amir Abdollahian held meetings with high-ranking Lebanese officials, including President Michel Aoun, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

The Lebanese foreign minister went on to say that the October 14 events in Beirut negatively affected the government’s measures.

Bou Habib was referring to the gunfire in Beirut in which seven people were killed and 32 others injured. It began during a peaceful protest by the Hezbollah and Amal loyalists against the judge investigating last year’s huge blast at Beirut’s port. Christian snipers from the Lebanese Forces (LF) faction led by Samir Geagea fired at the crowd.

The top diplomat also referred to the negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and stated that these negotiations would probably start in November.
Referring to the date of parliamentary elections set for March 27, 2022, the Lebanese foreign minister said there was a lot of pressure for holding parliamentary elections in proper time.

“In May 2022, our work is finished in the government. That is why the elections must be held before that date.”

Abdullah Bou Habib also referred to the issue of drawing the maritime borders between his country and the Zionist regime, saying: “We intend to cooperate with Washington in this regard in line with the U.S. efforts in the border demarcation negotiations, and not in line with the Tel Aviv efforts.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian drama “180º Rule” has won the awards for best feature film and best ensemble cast at the Beirut International Women’s Film Festival.

Sahar Dowlatshahi, Pejman Jamshidi, Hassan Purshirzi, Azita Hajian, Amirreza Ranjbaran, Sadaf Asgari, Mohammad Heidari and Ailin Jahed are the main members of the cast.

Directed by Farnush Samadi, “180º Rule” tells the story of Sara, a school teacher whom her students love and who is married to Hamed. As her family gets ready to attend a wedding in northern Iran, an unforeseen obligation falls on Hamed and derails their plans. When Sara’s husband suddenly forbids her to attend the event without him, she makes a decision that sets her on the painful path of atonement.

Winners of the Lebanese festival, which was launched in 2017 to highlight the role of women as leaders in their societies, were announced last Monday.

“The Present” by Palestinian filmmaker Farah Nabulsi was selected as best short fiction movie.

In this film, on his wedding anniversary, Yusef and his young daughter set out in the West Bank to buy his wife a gift. Between soldiers, segregated roads and checkpoints, how easy would it be to go shopping?

Suzannah Mirghani from Sudan was picked as best director for her “Al-Sit” in the short competition.

In a cotton-farming village in Sudan, 15-year-old Nafisa has a crush on Babiker, but her parents have arranged her marriage to a young Sudanese businessman living abroad and her matriarchal grandmother Al-Sit has her own plans.

“Ain’t No Time for Women” by Canadian director Sarra El Abed was name best short documentary.

The hairdressing salon Saida is a space where people speak openly, laugh and argue. The subject rarely is hair. In the run-up to the presidential elections in Tunisia the shop turns into a political arena where the women – young or old, conservative or with a modern outlook – indulge in discussions about the pros and cons of the candidates. Their clever and witty statements reflect a young democracy with all its rifts and fault lines.

“The Wedding Cake” by Monica Mazzitelli won the award for best animated film.

The co-production between Sweden and Italy is about a young woman who is forced to become a prostitute in order to settle her ex-husband’s debts. Her destiny is narrated through Playmobil figurines and a wedding cake that disappears along with the woman’s illusions. A true story about a very common problem in Eastern Europe.

The award for best feature documentary went to “A Thousand Girls Like Me” by Afghan filmmaker Sahra Mani.

It is an awe-inspiring vérité documentary that tells the story of a young Afghan woman’s brave fight to seek justice and protect her children after experiencing years of abuse at the hands of her father.

Khatera Golzad’s father physically and sexually abused her for more than thirteen years, and after several aborted pregnancies, she gave birth to a daughter and a son. Despite her many attempts to file charges, neither the Afghan police nor the legal system helped her. In 2014, she appeared on national television to publicly accuse her father, finally succeeding in bringing her case to court despite threats from male relatives and judges who labeled her a liar.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Lebanon’s judicial investigation of the Beirut port explosion started with political wrangling over the naming of a lead investigator, military threats to jail leakers, and doubts over whether a panel appointed along sectarian lines could be fully impartial.

So for many Lebanese, their greatest hope for credible answers about the blast that wrecked much of their capital may lie with outsiders: The French forensic police who have joined the probe and FBI investigators are expected to take part, The Associated Press reported.

French teams have pressed ahead at their work, sending divers into the underwater crater, taking explosives samples and preparing recommendations for both French and Lebanese magistrates. Among the French judicial police on the case are men and women who responded after the 2004 tsunami in Japan, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and the November 2015 and Bastille Day 2016 terror attacks in France.

The Beirut explosion lies at the crossroads of a disastrous accident and a crime scene. It still was not known what sparked the fire that ignited nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate that were stored for years in Beirut’s port next to densely populated residential areas. Documents have emerged that show the country’s top leadership and security officials were aware of the stockpile.

Search and rescue crews flew in from around the world in the immediate aftermath and found themselves looking at a scene that was both familiar and yet strangely alien.

“In an earthquake, it’s easier because we can understand … how it moves. But in this case, we didn’t have enough elements to understand what happened,” said Alberto Boanini, a member of the Italian rescue team. The team has seen its share of quakes and forest fires, but nothing quite like the port in Beirut, where he said it was hard to fathom what could level it so completely.

Many Lebanese want the probe taken out of the hands of their own government, having learned from past experience that the long-entrenched political factions, notorious for corruption, won’t allow any results damaging to their leadership to come to light. The explosion killed more than 175 people, injured at least 6,000, and left tens of thousands homeless.

Paris sent judicial police because a French architect was among the dead, and French law gives jurisdiction for an investigation if a citizen dies abroad under questionable circumstances.

But the French investigators work only at the invitation of the Lebanese, and their orders are confidential.

French officials say they have the access they need but will not say whether their inquiry can extend to questioning witnesses or requesting documents. They hand over their findings to the Lebanese, but keep a mirror copy for a French inquiry. The FBI is also joining at Lebanese authorities’ invitation.

Top Lebanese officials, including President Michel Aoun, have rejected calls for an independent probe, describing it as “a waste of time” and suggesting it would be politicized.

In its last decision before resigning under pressure, six days after the explosion, Prime Minister Hassan Diab’s government referred the port explosion case to the Higher Judicial Council, Lebanon’s highest justice authority, to carry out the investigation.

An argument then ensued with the outgoing justice minister over the investigation’s lead judge. The outgoing minister proposed a figure whom the panel rejected as too close to Aoun’s party. After wrangling back and forth, they settled on a compromise, Judge Fadi Sawwan, a former military investigating judge.

The Council itself is made up of 10 people, eight of whom are appointed according to the interests of the various political factions and religious sects in line with Lebanon’s sectarian power-sharing system.

The authorities have so far arrested at least 19 people in connection to the blast, including the head of the Customs Department and his predecessor, as well as the head of the port.

Lebanese say they want to see top officials who knew about the existence of the ammonium nitrate being investigated.

“They will blame the small guys while the ones who are really responsible will get away with their crime, that’s what will happen,” said Jad, a 38-year-old computer engineer who declined to give his full name in line with his company’s regulations not to discuss politics.

“Look, it’s simple. If this time there is no credible, serious investigation that will lead to the punishment of everyone responsible for this disaster, it is goodbye Lebanon. No one will ever want to live in this country again,” he said, standing on a bridge overlooking the decimated port. He had come to inspect the damage.

Lebanese forensics expert Omar Nachabe said the public infighting about the name of the lead investigator is a bad sign that casts doubt on the credibility of any local investigation.

“If I am a Lebanese citizen, my capital (city) has been destroyed. I want a quick and serious investigation, yet the government has not shown until now that it is up to the task,” he told the local channel LBCI. He lamented the time wasted before the explosion was referred to the HJC and the bickering that continues till now.

Explosions have marked a grim timeline in Lebanon’s modern history and have killed presidents, prime ministers and countless journalists and activists during the country’s 1975-90 civil war and beyond.

Almost none of the perpetrators were ever arrested or tried, and the truth was invariably buried. Lebanese had high hopes that the UN-backed tribunal investigating the 2005 killing of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri would be a chance to end impunity in Lebanon. But it took 15 years and was marred by doubts, politics and more deaths. The tribunal is to issue verdicts Tuesday.

International involvement in the investigation might bring some truth, but bringing justice is more complicated. Dov Jacobs, an international legal scholar based in the Netherlands, said the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine six years ago might be the closest analogy.

In that case, international experts had full access to the site, and international prosecutors charged three Russians and a Ukrainian with involvement in bringing down the plane and the murder of all on board. The men are on trial in a Dutch court in absentia, since none have been extradited.

But in Lebanon, Jacobs said, “the investigation itself is a tool of political influence. It’s one of those frustrating moments where immediate calls for justice are faced with a wall which is the political reality on the ground.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) released Tuesday said the World Food Program would be sending 50,000 tons of wheat flour to Beirut to stabilize Lebanon’s wheat supply.

A Reuters report Friday revealed Lebanon’s government-held no strategic stockpile of grain before last week’s blast at the port and all privately held stocks at the country’s only grain silo were destroyed in the explosion.

The flour from the World Food Program will be sent “to stabilize the national supply and ensure there is no food shortage in Beirut,” the report said.

Current flour reserves in Lebanon were estimated to cover market needs for six weeks.

“An initial shipment of 17,500 tons is due to arrive in Beirut within the coming 10 days to supply bakeries for one month,” the report said.

The head of the UN food agency said Monday he’s “very, very concerned” Lebanon could run out of bread in about 2 ½ weeks because 85% of the country’s grain comes through Beirut’s devastated port – but he believes an area of the port can be made operational this month.

David Beasley, who is in Beirut assessing damage and recovery prospects, told a virtual UN briefing on the humanitarian situation following last week’s explosion in the Lebanese capital that “at the devastated site, we found a footprint that we can operate on a temporary basis.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Information Minister of Lebanon, Manal Abdel-Samad on Sunday stepped down in the first government resignation since a deadly port blast killed at least 160 people and destroyed swathes of the capital.

“After the enormous Beirut catastrophe, I announce my resignation from government,” she said in a statement carried by local media, AFP reported.

She said in her resignation letter that change remained “elusive” and she regrets failing to fulfill the aspirations of the Lebanese people.

Her resignation comes as about half a dozen lawmakers offered to step aside over government performance. Local media also reported that another minister, and a close advisor to Prime Minister Hassan Diab, was also expected to resign. Diab met with his cabinet reportedly to discuss the resignations Sunday, but there were no comments after the meeting, AP wrote.

Diab said Saturday he would propose early elections to break the impasse that is plunging Lebanon ever deeper into political and economic crisis.

The head of Lebanon’s Maronite church meanwhile called on the entire government to step down over the August 4 explosion.

Abdel-Samad’s resignation came after a night of demonstrations against the government.

While the exact circumstances that led to the blast in a Beirut port warehouse are not yet known, protesters said it could not have happened without the kind of corruption and incompetence that has come to define Lebanon’s ruling class.

Hundreds of tons of highly explosive material were stored in the waterfront hangar, and the blast sent a shock wave that killed at least 160 people, wounded nearly 6,000 and defaced the coastline of Beirut — destroying hundreds of buildings.

Protesters enraged by the blast vowed to continue to rally after a night of street clashes in which they stormed several ministries.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday oversaw a UN-backed virtual donors conference in Paris to raise aid for Lebanon, a country already mired in a painful economic crisis.

The world must respond “quickly and effectively” to the disaster, Macron warned, urging international cooperation “to ensure that neither violence nor chaos prevails”.

The mood was one of grief and fury in Beirut, a day after many of the dead were laid to rest and when thousands demonstrated in the biggest anti-government rally the country has seen in months.

The army Saturday used tear gas and rubber bullets to clear hundreds of protesters from the central Martyrs’ Square.

The street violence left 65 people injured, according to the Red Cross.

Demonstrators temporarily occupied the Foreign Ministry building before being forced out by the army three hours later.

Protesters, some brandishing nooses, also stormed the economy and energy ministries and the Association of Banks before they were pushed back out by soldiers.

Rescuers meanwhile kept digging through the rubble of toppled buildings as hopes slowly faded of finding more survivors from the colossal blast that was felt as far away as Cyprus.

Beirut’s Wound Was Wound of Negligence

The massive explosion in Beirut port shocked the world. Some 2,750 metric tons of ammonium nitrate stored at a warehouse in a port which was the vital economic vein of Lebanon is considered a negligence in its absolute sense of the word, even if it is said that ammonium nitrate with the chemical formula of NH4NO3 is a chemical fertilizer and it is used for nitriding the soil for improving productivity in cultivation but being at the same time an explosive material. Ammonium nitrate is used mostly place of fertilizer (urea) and nitrogen accounts for 34 percent of each gram of ammonium nitrate and this gives to this material both explosive potential and power for more durability in the atmosphere.

IRAN NEWS POLITICAL DESK

Agro experts believe the advantage of ammonium nitrate to urea is its sustainability in the soil because the existence of nitrogen prolongs the longevity and durability of a fertilizer. But among the explosive materials, ammonium nitrate is not considered as a material with explosive property but in case heat or detonator causes a burning in this material, it definitely functions like an explosive material with accelerated blast waves.

Beirut blast is today the result of this kind of explosion that the fire in the lateral warehouse close to this material has caused a destructive and unbelievable act. The news and reports coming from Beirut all show that all Lebanon’s officials and Judiciary were aware of storage of this huge amount of ammonium nitrate in the port.

After the blast in the port, Reuters in a report said a ship carrying 2,750 tons of a highly combustible chemical from Georgia to Mozambique was confiscated in 2013 and the cargo was kept in this warehouse till the legal case was sorted out. This seemingly Russian ship is named the Rhosus, sailing under a Moldovan flag, docked in Beirut in September 2013.

Lebanese TV channel LBCI had earlier reported that this huge amount of ammonium nitrate with explosive power was being carried by the Rhosus when it had technical problems while sailing from Georgia to Mozambique. When the ship was being directed to the port, it was found that the ship’s cargo was ammonium nitrate. So this chemical material was removed from cargo vessel Rhosus and deposited in warehouse 12, to ensure port safety till the legal case was settled.

According to the latest reports and remarks of security experts, the explosion happened during welding whose sparks hit the firecrackers at the warehouse and the firecrackers acted like a detonator for the ammonium and caused the huge blast.

LBCI also reported that due to the explosion, all the stored wheat in the other warehouses and silos were destroyed completely and all buildings of silos have become useless and the port is almost destroyed. What the media say about this blast is important but unbelievable. Hours after the blast two official media outlets Al-Arabia TV channel and the British newspaper the Independent blamed Israel for the explosion, claiming this is the cost that Lebanese people are paying for the presence of Hezbollah forces in the country.

Managing Director of Iranian conservative Persian daily Kayhan, Mr. Hossein Shariatmadari, in an article by bringing some reasons claimed that Saudi Arabia is today an Arab country and at the same time one of the closest countries to the Zionist regime and one cannot accept that Al-Arabia which reflects the policies of Saudi Family accuses the Zionist regime of committing such a horrible crime of explosion in Beirut. But why does it do it? This is the question. Al-Arabia has said,” Hezbollah should be eliminated from the political and security scenes of Lebanon in order that such a similar accident would be avoided any more.”

If we see it as the Zionist regime’s threat against Lebanon, expressing the threat through the pen of the Saudi Family’s media is just a media issue and it cannot be reasonably true. I believe that the Beirut’s wound is because of Lebanese Judiciary and port officials’ negligence and fanning the flame of such seditious assumptions is not to the benefit of anyone.
