TEHRAN (Iran News) – Some 68,700 tons of commodities worth $79.878 million have been imported into Iran through Bazargan border crossing since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21), according to the Bazargan customs director-general.

The value of imports has increased by $62.398 million, compared to the figure for the same period in the previous year in which the imports stood at only $17.48 million due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mojtaba Bazgir told IRNA on Sunday.

The volume of imports has also increased significantly compared to the same period in the previous year, as the weight of imports was reported to be 2,736 tons in the previous year’s same time span.

According to Bazgir, industrial machinery, iron or steel products, aluminum, automobiles, paint, and composite extracts, steel structures, adhesives, welding metals, ash, rubber, and rubber products, as well as textile and fabric were among the top commodity items entering the country through the mentioned crossing.

Located in West Azarbaijan Province, Bazargan is one of the three border crossings between Iran and Turkey; this border, which is Iran’s gateway to European countries, is located at Bazargan District in Maku County.

It is the most important Iranian ground border for importing and exporting.

In late February 2020, the border crossing was closed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus; it resumed operation after a three-month hiatus.

Iran sees trade with Turkey as key in efforts to confront the U.S. sanctions that have sought to undermine Tehran’s oil exports. Petrochemical products account for a major share of Iran’s exports to Turkey although the U.S. bans have made it difficult to settle payments between businesses in the two countries.

Turkey also relies on Iran as a major market for its manufacturing goods, including industrial machinery and garment, while it also sends to Iran some sizable shipments of crops and fruits that are not cultivated in the country.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A total number of 150 Iranian trucks entered neighboring Turkey on Friday after the resumption of border trade between the two countries, which was suspended for more than three months due to the coronavirus spread in the region, announced the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).

The IRICA spokesman, Rouhollah Latifi, added this took place on the first day following the reopening of the common border between the two countries on Thursday, Mehr News Agency reported.

He said the trucks entered Turkey through the three borders of Bazargan, Serow, and Razi, all located in northwestern Iran.

Latifi noted that in addition, 35 Turkish trucks, carrying goods, entered the Iranian territory on the same day.

A total number of 54 railroad cars loaded with Iranian products entered Turkey through Razi customs on this day, he said, adding, “Turkey also sent 26 freight cars carrying goods and commodities to the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

In the aftermath of the coronavirus outbreak in Iran, Turkey closed its land border to Iranian trucks as of February 22. The border closure continued for over three months.

French medical cargo

In addition, Director General of Bazargan Customs Administration Sadeq Namdar said on Friday that the first medical cargo from France arrived in Iran after the reopening of Bazargan border, according to Mehr News Agency.

He added the consignment comprises 7,300 kilograms of antiserum valued at €618,981, which is on its way to Tehran.

“Previously, due to the closure of Bazargan border, 19 medical cargos had entered the country through the Sarisu market in proximity to the border.”

Bazargan border is the only international border between Iran and Turkey which is open round the clock.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran exported commodities worth $609.61 million via Bazargan trade border crossing in the northwestern province of West Azarbaijan during March 20-April 19.

In an interview with IRNA on Sunday, Sadeq Namdar, the head of the Bazargan Customs Office, put the weight of the exported goods during the said period at 26,120 tons, listing the main items like agricultural products, petrochemicals, and metal products.

The official noted that in the same period last year, Iran exported goods valued at $215 million through the Bazargan border.

He added the whole world is facing a crisis caused by the coronavirus outbreak, saying, “If Bazargan border offers round-the-clock services, we will see a boom in exports.”

Bazargan Customs Office is one of the three terminals through which Iran and Turkey conduct trade. It was active 24 hours a day before the coronavirus outbreak.

Trade between Iran and Turkey exceeded $645 million from January to March, according to figures by Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (TCCIMA) published on Thursday.

According to the statistics, Iran’s exports to Turkey totaled $270 million over the period, showing a slight increase compared to the last quarter of 2019, but significantly down from figures seen during the first three months of the same year.

Iran had maintained a trade surplus of over 1$ billion with Turkey at the beginning of 2019, mainly because of its growing exports of oil byproducts.

However, the TCCIMA survey said that Iranian petchem exports to Turkey declined by a staggering figure of 99 percent over the past year, causing Iran’s balance trade with Turkey to slide into the negative territory.

The trade deficit narrowed from $250 million in early 2019 to $117 million in the first quarter this year, said the report.

It said Iran’s total imports from Turkey amounted to $376 million over the first quarter, indicating a decline of 35 percent compared to the similar period last year.

The reduction was mainly blamed on fewer shipments of tobacco, plastic products, and cardboard from Turkey into Iran.

As he informed, Turkey had not permitted the 25 Turks, who are studying in Iran’s Qom city, into their home country, recognizing them as coronavirus suspects and kept them at Bazargan border.

Accordingly, the individuals were quarantined temporarily at a hotel in Maku, before leaving the country for Turkey. None of the individuals show symptoms of the disease.

Iran and Turkey have held talks on controlling the outbreak. Iranian Ambassador to Ankara Mohammad Farzamand met and held talks with Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca on Tuesday.

The two sides discussed the joint efforts of Iran and Turkey to fight and control the spread of the coronavirus.

Farazmand stressed the cooperation of the Iranian and Turkish health ministries to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the meeting.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif and his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu held a phone talk on the recent developments related to the coronavirus outbreak in Iran and the ways to tackle it and the need to maintain and strengthen relationships.
