Among the news stuff in just a couple of days ago, there was some reporting the successful test of strategic and domestically-developed “Bavar-373”  (Bavar means belief in Persian) air defense missile system and its tracing and destroying of an electro-optic-guided target during the joint specialized air defense maneuver codenamed ‘Modafe’an-e Aseman-e Velayat 99’ (Guardians of Velayat’s Sky-99), and for the first time in a drill, the missile system successfully stopped a predetermined target.

What is evident and seen in the interviews of the commanders during this drill is that this was the first presence of the Bavar-373 system in an all-out drill rehearsal of a genuine air defense combat which registered a very successful performance in the framework of Iran’s integrated air defense network.

The state-of-the-art surface-to-air Bavar 373 missile defense system is Iran’s the first altitude air defense with high range which was designed and manufactured by the country’s experts and first was unveiled  in August 2019.

While congratulating this great success, Spokesman of ‘Modafean Aseman Velayat’ (The Defenders of Velayat Skies) Military Drill Second Brigadier General Amir Abbas Farajpour said, “Our country’s indigenous defense systems have a lot to demonstrate in the world and today we have appeared in this field on a global level. Of course, we have never been satisfied with the current situation and we are always updating and upgrading our systems and equipment to protect and defend the country’s sky from enemies’ threats.”

The spokesman of the drill has emphasized that during the drill, some air defense tactics were adopted by weighing the realities of a genuine combat with considering enemies’ capabilities, adding that for any visible and hidden angle in different layers of the air defense, necessary measures had been taken. He then said, “Our commanders in the air defense, with reviewing and weighing all weak and strong points of defensive plans and taking smart measures and actions, have been able to secure a safe sky under upgrading the defensive power. All designed hypothetical unmanned aircrafts and drones of enemies in the mid-altitude and their intrusion into the drill area were to be traced and destroyed by the Iranian Air Defense Force’s Mersad and the IRGC Aerospace Force’s Tabas defense systems which had been assigned by the integrated air defense network. Fire operations and rapid movement of defense systems from one location to other locations were among the measures taken in this stage of the drills, which were successfully carried out with the aim of preventing the hypothetical enemies to find the location of defense systems.”

According to the media center of the drill, during this joint specialized air defense of Guardians of Sky of Velayat’s Sky 99, besides Bavar-373 system, Mersad System of Air Force as well as Tabas System of IRGC targeted the hostile invading targets.

Meanwhile Qadir, Moraqeb and Bashir radars of the IRGC Aerospace Force and the Army Air Force detected flying targets over the general zone of the exercises, including manned and unmanned aircraft of the IRGC Aerospace Force and Army Air Force, which flew from various bases on the second day of massive aerial drills. After detection and tracing, the three powerful radars provided information on the discovered flying targets to the country’s integrated air defense network.

That under sanction resolutions restricting the national defense system as well as restrictions resulted by the disgraceful JCPOA agreement which had been imposed by the enemies and all of them have never been able to surround our defense power in the framework of their expectation, it is very surprising, and endless thanks to Almighty God.

It is very surprising that our committed, expert and religious forces in the Armed forces with a gradual pace and an amazing trust on God has enabled the country, which used once to demand even its smallest military needs from the foreigners, to be safe, from every direction, against any invasion of ill-wishers either regional or trans-regional ones. In fact it is exemplary in the history.

And this means only this item is praised more than all power showing stages achieved during the Sacred Defense. May God bless the founders of these innovations.

Also known as Iranian S-300, Bavar-373 air defense missile system joined the country’s air defense network on August 22 with President Rouhani’s order. Bavar-373 is a mobile missile defense system designed to intercept and destroy incoming hostile targets flying at altitudes of up to 65 kilometers. The system employs missiles that have a maximum range of 300 kilometers. The long-range defense system is capable of detecting up to 300 targets simultaneously and engages six targets at a time.

Commander of Army Air Defense Force Brigadier General Alireza Sabahifard said on the unveiling ceremony that one of the most important features of the missile system is that the enemy has no idea what it will be encountering since all the data pertaining to the system is stored inside the country. The new system is said to be capable of neutralizing both conventional aerial targets such as aircraft and drones, as well as high-speed ballistic missiles.

The homegrown Bavar-373 air defense system came on stream on Thursday, August 22, in a ceremony with President Rouhani in attendance. August 22 marks National Defense Industry Day in Iran.

The defense industry has managed to fulfill the needs of Army’s Navy, said Khanzadi, hailing invaluable capabilities of human resources in this field.

He went on to say that achieved technologies and techniques in Iran’s defense industry will have a great impact on the country’s defense tactics, adding, “These systems will help us in heavy destroyers to target flying objects in distant areas.”

Iran’s defense sector has seen many great achievements made by Iranian engineers during recent years. The most recent unveiling came on Thursday as domestically made Bavar-373 air defense system came on stream. Tehran has repeatedly announced that its military power is just aimed at defending the country against threats and does not present any threat to others.

“The system has been designed and developed considering the country’s need for a defense system with a high range,” Brigadier General Shahrokh Shahram, a deputy defense minister, told national TV on Thursday night.

Bavar-373 missile system was developed as Iran “needed a missile system stronger than the Russian S-300, given the increasing threats” against the country, he added.

The air defense missile system has a higher interception range and a greater combat power compared with the Russian counterpart, and enjoys over 10,000 compound eyes, each of which serves as a radar, he explained, according to Press TV.

He also compared Bavar-373 with the U.S.-made Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) and Patriot systems, saying it is categorized at a higher class than THAAD and is much better than the Patriot system.

“Bavar-373 is more like S-400”

President Hassan Rouhani also boasted the production of the advanced missile system, saying the mobile missile defense system is more powerful than S-300 missile system and is more like S-400.

“This very valuable work is a great present of the armed forces and Defense Ministry for the Iranian people,” Rouhani said during the unveiling ceremony.

Bavar-373 is a mobile missile defense system designed to intercept and destroy incoming hostile targets. The system employs missiles that have a maximum range of 300 kilometers. The system is capable of simultaneously detecting up to 300 targets, tracking 60 targets at once and engaging six targets at a time, according to Press TV.

The system is a competitor to Russia’s S-300 missile system and brings quite a few substantial upgrades over its Russian equivalent.

Brigadier General Abbas Farajpour, head of the Iranian Air Force Studies Center, said on Thursday that the system was named Bavar (faith) because the Iranians are confident that they are able to build a system which turns the country into a “regional and international power”.

“At a juncture, the country which builds S-300 [Russia] lost its willingness to deliver the missile system to us. So, we came to the conclusion that sometimes even our friends do not want or are not be able to help us. The first spark struck and we took action to manufacture a domestic system which is more sophisticated,” he explained.

He explained that if S-300 system is able to hit 6 targets simultaneously, Bavar-373 can hit 9 targets.

He added that in the near future, there will be more demands to buy Bavar-373 than Patriot missile system.

‘Iran builds 770 defense products’

General Reza Talaeinik, the vice defense minister for parliamentarian affairs, said on Friday that 770 types of arms are being built domestically.

During a speech at the Friday prayers in Qom, he said more than 85 percent of defense products are manufactured domestically.

A distinguishing feature of Bavar-373 is its vertical launching system with square launchers, mostly used for air defense on warships.

Bavar-373 uses a long-range, phased array fire-control radar, dubbed Me’raj-4.

The air defense system employs three different types of missiles to hit targets at various altitudes.

Iranian military technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

Meanwhile an Iranian Army general says the domestically-built missile defense system “Bavar-373” is much better than the US Patriot system and its Russian counterpart S-300.

Meanwhile in the ceremony, Iran’s president has downplayed the U.S. administration’s efforts to defeat the Islamic Republic through its “maximum pressure” policy, saying Donald Trump and the Republican Party will soon lose their power while the Islamic Republic is still in power.

President Hassan Rouhani made the remarks in an address to a Thursday ceremony to unveil the homegrown “Bavar-373” missile defense system, which is a more advanced version of the Russian S-300.

Rouhani referred to a meeting he held last year with the head of a European country on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, and said, “In that meeting, the European official quoted the US president as saying that if Europeans cooperate with Trump and stop working with Iran, the Islamic Republic would not exist in three months’ time.”

“I told that European official that the man who made such a claim will leave office himself, and his party will also lose power, but the Islamic Republic will remain in power more strongly for hundreds of years more,” Rouhani said.

He said it’s been a year since the deadline given by Trump to that European official, but Iran is still strong despite the U.S. efforts to weaken the country.

“A superpower has mobilized all its facilities – from the CIA to the Treasury, the State Department, its security forces, and all its spies across the world to see which vessels approach Iranian ports or leave them.”

“The U.S. has never been weaker, alienated and isolated than now, and I cannot recall such a weak position for the U.S. in history,” Rouhani said.

“Just two days ago, the U.S. Secretary of State expressed his next year’s grief about Iran and said if the Iran nuclear deal remains in place, the anti-Iran arms embargoes will be lifted, and the country will be able to buy weapons,” he said.

However, he added, no one shared his concern. “The U.S. had never been so much humiliated and looked so much desperate in history.”

Also last year the U.S. president personally attended a UN Security Council meeting, but all the 14 members of the UNSC opposed him, he said.

“Trump was also mocked by all members of the UN General Assembly, and this is unprecedented in the history of the U.S. that its president is mocked at the UN.”

“The U.S. has been defeated, and we are the winners of this battle.”
