TEHRAN (Iran News) – Alireza Peyman-Pak, Head of Trade Promotion Organization of Iran (TPOI) said that Iran’s recent trade conference in Moscow was successful and coordination was made with Moscow to ensure food security.

“We predict that the Ukraine conflict will last and that sanctions will continue to be imposed on Russia. Therefore, the issue of food security, supply of oil, wheat and barley was prioritized, and in this regard, a long-term agreement for the supply of these items was put on the agenda, and necessary measures have been taken in coordination with Russia in this regard,” Alireza Peyman-Pak told reporters.

The TOPI head also pointed to a recent Moscow-hosted trade conference between Iran and Russia and said, “The visit of the Iranian delegation to Russia is considered successful. About 40 meetings were held during this event and free trade agreements were signed with 6 Eurasian member states.”

He added, “After the agreement with the Russian side, the customs of the strategic port of Makhachkala was reopened, which will have significant benefits for the exports to Russia.”

The head of the Trade Development Organization also noted that the country’s exports grew by $ 13 billion last year, adding, “We are trying to control fluctuations in the export sector so that the presence in the target markets would be long-term.”

He said Iran will soon enter into a similar agreement with the Azerbaijan republic too.

Peyman-Pak noted that the bulk of export incentives go to knowledge-based firms, noting that good agreements have been made with Russia, Oman and Indonesia for the purpose of trade development of these companies.

He said Iran must shift away from selling raw material alone.

Peyman-Pak noted that Iran’s exports grew by $13 billion last year, saying the country is trying to control export fluctuations so that it will have a long-term presence in target markets.

The surge in Iran’s trade with foreign nations comes at a time when the Islamic republic is under the harshest unilateral sanctions by the U.S. Iran oil exports have also grown in recent months and the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi says revenues from crude sales are returning to the country despite restrictions on the Iranian banking system.

Meanwhile Iranian ambassador to Russia stressed that the two countries intend to expand cooperation in the field of energy.

On Monday, the Iranian ambassador to Russia visited the booth of Iran’s National Petrochemical Company and talked with the heads of large Iranian holdings present at the exhibition.

The exhibition, which is held in the field of equipment and technology in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries, is expected to have about 20,000 visitors.

On the sidelines of the 21st Russian Oil and Gas Exhibition, the Iranian Ambassador to Russia, referring to the good and beneficial relations between the two countries said: “Iran and Russia, with their rich oil and gas reserves, have a good opportunity to develop cooperation in this sector.”

Jalali said that the presence of Morteza Shah Mirzaei, Deputy Minister of Oil and CEO of Iran’s Petrochemicacompanyl, along with a number of capable Iranian petrochemical holdings in the exhibition, expresses Iran’s will to develop cooperation in this field.

Referring to the significant production capacity of petrochemical products in Iran, Shah Mirzaei mentioned the country’s oil and gas reserves as the backbone of this industry and invited the companies present at the exhibition to invest in Iranian projects.

Iranian Deputy Minister of Oil also invited companies to attend the two exhibition events of Iran Plast and the Oil Exhibition.

The CBI has supplied $9.5 billion for importing basic goods as well as medicine in the first six months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-September 22), another official with the bank has previously announced.

As reported by IRIB, Shiva Raveshi said the government allocated $8 billion for the supply of basic goods and medicine in the current fiscal year’s budget bill, all of which has been supplied in the first half of the year and $1.5 billion has also been supplied for the imports of Covid-19 vaccine.

“The $9.5 billion that has been provided this year is almost equal to the total currency provided for the imports of basic goods in the previous calendar year (ended on March 20); this shows that this year we performed better in terms of meeting the real needs of the country,” she said.

Raveshi pointed to the achievements of the bank despite the difficulties created by the U.S. sanctions, saying: “In the conditions of sanctions and reduction of oil revenues, we were able to meet the basic needs of the country and even the necessary materials for the production units, which is considered a success for the country and shows that the capacity of the country’s non-oil exports is increasing.”

Meanwhile, back in September, Mehrdad Jamal Orounaqi, the deputy head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) for technical affairs, had said that the clearance of basic commodities from the customs has been expedited.

Head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) Mohammad Rastad says over four million tons of basic goods are already stored at the country’s ports, the PMO portal reported on Wednesday.

Rastad noted that 11.4 million tons of basic goods have also been cleared from the country’s ports since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21).

The official said 24 vessels loaded with 1.3 million tons of such commodities are currently waiting at the ports to unload their cargoes.

At present, the storage of basic goods is mainly at the Imam Khomeini Port with more than 3.2 million tons, Rastad said, adding that the total number of ships that are unloading in the country’s ports is 18, of which 10 are at Imam Khomeini Port.

Referring to the importance of Imam Khomeini port, Rastad said in the fifth month of the current Iranian calendar year (July 22-August 22) about 1.5 million tons of goods were unloaded at this port, with a daily average of 46,750 tons.

“Every day, on average, 52,799 tons of goods were also distributed from this port by truck and through the rail network,” he added.

Back in July, Head of Iran Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization Darioush Amani said that over 154 million tons of basic goods were transported through Iran’s roads in the first three months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-June 21) of which 6.5 million tons were distributed from the country’s ports.

“Some 62 percent of these basic goods were distributed from Imam Khomeini port and the rest from Bandar Abbas and Amirabad ports,” Amani told IRIB.

According to Amani, last year, a total of 502 million tons of goods were transported through the country’s road network, which was unprecedented and grew by 5.6 percent compared to the preceding year.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Rouhani orders IRICA to facilitate clearance of basic goods. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has ordered the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) to take the necessary measures for the clearance of basic goods deposited at the country’s customs.

According to IRICA Deputy Head Mehrdad Jamal Orounaqi, in a recent meeting of the government economic coordination headquarters, some problems and issues were raised regarding the clearance of goods in the country’s customs, and a report was presented to the president.

Following the mentioned meeting, Rouhani issued a decree ordering to investigate and resolve the mentioned problems and also agreed with the IRICA and Industry Ministry’s proposals in this regard.

According to Orounaqi, currently, over 5.2 million tons of basic goods have been piled up in the country’s ports, of which 3.8 million tons are deposited at Imam Khomeini Port.

Head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) Mohammad Rastad had earlier said that the outbreak of the coronavirus was the main reason for the delay in the clearance of goods from ports and customs.

The importers however say that the lack of foreign currency allocations for them has been a major challenge for clearing their goods.

Back in February, the Iranian market regulation headquarters approved six new directives aiming to enhance the clearance of goods at the country’s customs.

The mentioned directives covered a variety of areas including the value of the goods, weight tolerance, abandoned goods, banned goods, and foreign transit.

Also, to prevent the deposition of goods in special economic zones and customs, the IRICA was given the authority to take the necessary actions to clear basic and essential goods for transit, without requiring the owners to place order registration.

Earlier in January, Iranian Industry, Mining, and Trade Minister Alireza Razm-Hosseini had said that his ministry was going to take necessary measures to accelerate the clearance of goods at customs to help regulate domestic markets.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2020), the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has paid $14.5 billion for basic and essential goods, despite the coronavirus and its associated problems, said Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday.

Rouhani noted that many countries have experienced negative economic growth during the coronavirus pandemic and their economies have shrunk by nine, 13 and 14 percent, but in the Islamic Republic of Iran, despite all the pressures and sanctions in the first quarter of the current year, only a drop of 1.7 percent has been witnessed, according to president.ir.

In recent months, the industry, agriculture and services sector have grown, Rouhani said, adding that it is possible that if we continue with this trend, we will achieve positive non-oil growth by the end of the current year (March 20, 2021).

The CBI statistics show that the growth of the monetary base in the first five months of this Iranian year (March 20-August 21, 2020) compared to the end of last year was equal to 2.9 percent; this indicates the correct path of the country’s economic trend, he said.

In the 11th and 12th governments very good steps have been taken in terms of the sustainable supply of safe water, electricity, gas, rural roads, health, education and communication networks for villages, Rouhani said.

He noted that in recent months, valuable measures have been taken for employment, which will continue vigorously.

With the government’s measures, the share of rural employment in the country’s employment has increased from three percent to 25 percent, the president said.

He called on all members of the government, deputies, and provincial officials to increase their efforts to make leaps in the fields of agriculture, industry and employment, adding that good measures have been taken in these areas, which we must continue, and, if other forces help, it would accelerate.

The government has plans to strengthen Iran’s economy that we hope will be implemented with the help of the other branches of power, Rouhani concluded.

“Despite the spread of coronavirus, which has a direct impact on the amount of trade and exchanges in the world, the process of unloading basic goods had significant growth”, he said, adding that since the beginning of the current year on 25 March, more than 560,702 tons of basic goods have entered this strategic port.

Referring to the continuation of the arrival of these goods to Chabahar port, he announced that “the ship carrying the basic goods of raw sugar weighing 66,700 tons from Brazil entered this port and its unloading operation is being carried out with modern and strategic equipment.”

Talking to IRNA, Mehrdad Jamal-Orunaqi put the amount of non-container basic commodities deposited at the country’s major ports at over 4.2 million tons for the time being and said that 736,000 tons of those goods are currently being unloaded.

Iran’s import of basic goods has risen by 2.5-fold in the past Iranian year (ended March 19), according to an official with Government Trading Corporation (GTC) of Iran.

Amir Talebi, the acting director of GTC’s foreign trade department, said last year most of the basic commodities imported via ports were unloaded directly from vessels to the trains which reduced the cost and time of transportation significantly.

“Our duty is supplying the basic goods required in the country and to do so we are constantly monitoring and investigating the markets to purchase these goods in the best condition,” Talebi noted.

The official said that over two million tons of rice, oil, and sugar have been imported to the country in the past year, some of which have been distributed and some have been stored.

Last month, the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (known as RAI) Saeed Rasouli announced that the transit of basic goods to the ports via railway network during March 20-April 19 was tripled compared to the figure for the same month last year.

“The direct transport of goods from ship to train, which took place in the country’s ports after 15 years, plays an important role in increasing the speed of cargo transportation and reducing the costs,” the official highlighted.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Head of Government Trading Corporation of Iran (GTC) Amir Talebi said that basic goods and commodities imported into the country last year [ended March 20, 2020] recorded a 2.5fold growth as compared to the same period of last year.

Despite tough sanctions imposed against Iran last year, import of basic goods and commodities for storage operation registered about 2.5fold growth as compared to a year earlier.

Most basic goods, imported into ports of the country last year, were relocated to permanent goods storage centers directly via vessels which were led to the reduced transportation costs as well as fast delivery of goods to the destination, he added.

Supply of basic goods is the main task of the Government Trading Corporation of Iran, he said, adding, “to preserve strategic reserves in the country and monitor the global market, goods needed in the country are purchased especially at the condition that the country is facing tough US sanctions.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, he pointed out that more than 2 million tons of basic products [including rice, vegetable oil, and sugar] were imported into the country last year [ended March 21, 2020], some of these products have been distributed in a nationwide network.

Talebi added, “about 115 international contracts were inked in order to purchase more than 5,000,000 tons of basic goods last year.”

According to Ravanbakhsh Behzadian, the announced figure shows a growth of 67 percent in comparison with the same period in the preceding year.

Some 6.98 million tons of basic goods were imported in the said time, registering 64 percent growth year-on-year, he added.

Of the said imported amount, 7 million tons have been through Imam Khomeini port, the official said.

An official from Iranian ministry of industry, mine and trade told Mehr news agency in early August that the volume of ministry’s registered orders for imports of basic goods is five-fold more than domestic need for the products.

“The ordered goods will be imported incrementally,” the officials said.

“Some of the ordered goods are now at the country’s customs and will be released gradually to regulate domestic market,” he added.

“Some parts of the orders are made by state-run companies and the industry ministry is the body in charge of them,” the official said.

“The ministry will supervise distribution of the goods to regulate domestic market and to protect both producers and consumers,” he added.

The official underlined that presently, Iran’s domestic market is facing no difficulty with supplying basic goods.

Supplying basic goods is one of the major issues on the Iranian government’s agenda in the current Iranian calendar year (started on March 21) and it is one of the focal pillars in the national budget bill for this year.

In this due, the government is taking numerous strategies for the supply of these goods. One of them is allocating foreign currency for the imports of basic goods through domestic Forex Management Integrated System (locally known as NIMA) which allows importers to supply their required foreign currency without specific problems.

The Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has paid €3.2 billion to import basic goods during the past month, according to the central bank governor.

“In the past month, 1.8 billion euro has been paid for importing basic goods including oil, meat, rice, medical equipment, etc., while 1.4 billion euro has been supplied by the domestic Forex Management Integrated System [locally known as NIMA] for importing raw materials as well as capital and consumer goods,” Abdolnaser Hemmati wrote on his Instagram page.

According to the latest announcement of CBI, the bank has paid €5.5 billion for supplying basic goods since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21) till early September.

Such measures have been taken to encounter the recent unprecedented sharp depreciation of rial against the U.S. dollar.

The increase in prices of basic goods outstrips people’s income, i.e. purchasing power has decreased.
