TEHRAN (Iran News) –The governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) traveled to Oman on Sunday, aiming to develop monetary and banking cooperation between the two countries.

Heading a delegation, Mohammadreza Farzin arrived in Muscat, the capital of Oman, on Sunday evening and was welcomed by Omani officials, the CBI portal reported.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Mehdi Safari also accompanies the CBI governor on his trip to Oman.

On the first day of his visit, Farzin met and held talks with Oman’s Minister of Finance Sultan bin Salim Al Habsi on Monday, during which the officials referred to the 41 percent growth in the volume of trade between the two countries this year, and emphasized the need to increase cooperation in order to facilitate economic relations and also develop trade exchanges.

Speaking in this meeting, Farzin underlined the growing bilateral relations between Iran and Oman, saying: “We use all the tools to increase monetary and banking cooperation between Iran and Oman to increase the volume of economic exchanges.”

Al Habsi for his part pointed to the good economic relations between the two countries in recent years and emphasized the activation of various capacities of Oman to develop cooperation with Iran.

“Increasing economic cooperation and facilitating commercial exchanges between Oman and Iran is on our agenda,” he stressed.

Farzin also met with Governor of the Central Bank of Oman (CBO) Sayyid Taimur bin Asa’ad bin Tariq Al Said to discuss the development and promotion of monetary, financial, and banking interactions, as well as strengthening and increasing commercial and economic relations and exchanges between the two countries.

The relations between Iran and Oman have been based on mutual respect and interests in the last few decades, despite the tensions in the Persian Gulf and U.S. efforts to intensify sanctions.

Omani officials believe that close relations with Iran are based on realism and consider Iran as a great neighbor.

Last week, during the two countries’ 20th Joint Economic Committee meeting in Tehran, Iran and Oman signed two memorandums of understanding (MOU) to boost bilateral cooperation and emphasize the importance of using their national currencies in mutual trade instead of the dollar.

The joint committee meeting was co-chaired by Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mining and Trade Abbas Aliabadi, and Oman’s Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion Qais Mohammed Al Yousef.

During his stay in Tehran, Mohammed Al Yousef also met with Farzin, and stressed the importance of using Iranian and Omani national currencies in mutual trade.

The Omani official said his country wants to have a strong presence in establishing the required infrastructure for banking and monetary transactions in Iran, implementing joint projects, as well as making investments in industrial and mineral projects. Omani investors are also keen to participate in energy projects and to develop Iran’s gas fields, he added.

The top Iranian banker also said that his country welcomes any measure that helps boost monetary and banking cooperation between the two countries.

Farzin stressed the importance of using national currencies by the two countries in their mutual trade instead of the dollar as well.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – During a meeting between the governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) and the Syrian prime minister in Damascus, the two sides explored the ways to expand monetary and banking relations between the two countries.

During the meeting, CBI Governor Mohammad-Reza Farzin announced the development of monetary and banking relations between Iran and Syria and the removal of the dollar from the economic and commercial exchanges of the two countries in the near future.

He said Tehran is ready to promote banking and monetary relations with Syria based on the agreements of the presidents of the two countries, and the establishment of an Iranian bank in Syria, which will be realized soon, will be the basis for the growth of relations and commercial cooperation between the two countries.

Referring to the various fields of monetary and banking cooperation between Iran and Syria, the CBI governor emphasized the readiness of Iran to implement agreements in this field and to replace national currencies in the commercial and economic exchanges of the two countries.

The prime minister of Syria, for his part, expressed hope for the bright future of economic relations between Syria and Iran and emphasized that holding technical-economic meetings between experts and officials of the two countries promises to increase the comprehensive cooperation between Syria and Iran.

Referring to laying the ground for the banking and monetary cooperation between Syria and Iran in order to increase the economic relations between the two countries, during the specialized meeting of the governors of the central banks of Syria and Iran, Hussein Arnous stated the step of setting up an Iranian bank in Syria in the near future is definitely a strong foundation for the next steps in the field of development of economic cooperation between the two countries.

In mid-October, Iranian Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Ehsan Khandouzi said he had held talks with his Syrian counterpart on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Marrakech, to discuss the implementation of the agreements reached between the two countries during President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to Damascus.

“In this meeting, the latest progress of the economic agreements made during President Raisi’s visit to Damascus was discussed,” IRNA quoted Khandouzi as saying.

According to the minister, issues related to joint insurance and joint banks were also among the subjects raised in the meeting and it was decided that the Iranian and Syrian sides should each follow up on these matters.

On August 1, the minister announced the launching of a joint bank and insurance company with Syria.

Khandouzi made the announcement after meeting with Syrian Communications and Technology Minister Iyad Mohammad al-Khatib and the country’s Economy and Foreign Trade Minister Mohammad Samer al-Khalil in Tehran.

According to Khandouzi, the insurance company is a consortium of Iranian and Syrian insurance firms and the joint bank is also shared, with Iran owning 60 percent and Syria 40 percent of the shares.

He noted that the mentioned bank and insurance company have been launched mainly with the aim of facilitating the activities of Iranian businessmen and traders in Syria.

“We hope that with more cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of taxation and customs, we will witness a new chapter in economic relations between the two countries,” Khandouzi said.

The Syrian market is a very green market that can provide an excellent opportunity for Iranian companies, manufacturers, investors, and businessmen, he added.

According to the minister, the ease of using investment and trade opportunities in the Syrian market following the agreements made can be attractive to many Iranian companies, since it can increase their export potential and revenues and also deepen their influence in neighboring countries.

“Of course, we are also ready to welcome Syrian investors and businessmen in Iran. It seems that the institutionalization of the financial and insurance sector, as a necessary prelude to advancing business and investment goals, can be considered good news for the economic operators of both sides,” the official said.

Following a visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Syria in May, a delegation of the country’s senior officials traveled to Tehran in early August to meet with Iranian counterparts and explore avenues of cooperation, and also follow up on the agreements reached during President Raisi’s visit to the country.

In late July, Tehran hosted a meeting of the heads of the Iran-Syria Joint Economic Committee on Monday during which the two sides discussed previously reached agreements and explored ways of accelerating their implementation.

Fresh indications have appeared that show Iran and Russia are moving closer to an ambitious plan to integrate their banking systems – a strategy both hope would make them immune to the financial sanctions of the United States in the future.

A top banking official in Tehran was quoted by media as saying that the Islamic Republic was already conducting tests with Russia to link the band card systems of the two countries and were already in talks to finalize an agreement between their central banks to overcome the related legal issues.

The announcement was made by Davood Mohammad Beigi, the Director of the Payment System department of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI), as quoted by media.

“At present, Iran has the closest ties with Russia in the field of international credit cards and good measures have been taken in technical terms,” Beigi said. “In recent months, tests have been carried out less regularly due to some legal problems. In order for any relations to be established, the two countries and their respective central banks need to reach agreements,” he was quoted as saying by Iran’s Mehr News Agency in a report also carried by Russia’s Sputnik news agency.

The countries are expected to cooperate on magnetic cards, the official added.

“They will be normal debit cards which can be used by the customer abroad. With respect to the rate agreed upon between the customer and the bank, the bank pays the amount in a foreign currency and will withdraw the equal amount in Rial from the person’s bank account,” Beigi explained, while answering the question on whether the cooperation involves the currency cards or the standard ones.

Iran’s CBI announced through a statement in May that the Islamic Republic and Russia had agreed to integrate their bank card systems – a move that officials said would enable Iranian and Russian citizens to use their cards in each other’s countries.

“Iranian citizens who have a Shetab [Iran’s national payment system] card and those who have Russian [Mir] cards will be able to use ATMs in both countries,” the bank announced in its statement.

On a related front, Iran announced in mid-October that an agreement had been signed with a Russian provider of banking technological solutions to connect the country’s financial network with global payment systems.

The agreement was signed between Iran’s Informatics Services Corporation (ISC) and Russia’s BPC Group of Companies.

Based on it, the two companies would cooperate in creating a standard banking card switch platform so as to provide a link between Iranian clients and international providers of financial services.
