TEHRAN (Iran News) – Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi says the country will name its next homegrown supercomputer after Maryam Mirzakhani, the late Iranian math genius.Azari Jahromi made the remarks in a tweet on Sunday, when the country launched a homegrown supercomputer named “Simorgh”, which is a benevolent, mythical bird of prey in Iranian mythology and literature.

Simorgh’s current processing power is more than one petaflops (i.e. one thousand million million (1015) floating-point operations per second).

This supercomputer will support businesses with the goal of developing artificial intelligence. It is able to do various tasks including Big Data Analysis, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and Genetic Data Analysis.

Jahromi tweeted, in mid-August 2019, promised that Simorgh would be “100 times more powerful than previous ones.”

The name “Simorgh” derives from an ancient Iranian mythological bird, very like the Phoenix in other lore, that is gigantic, universally benevolent, and unilaterally female. This represents an interesting symbol for Iran’s supercomputer—a replete sort of union between the country’s past and its dream for the future.

Iran is making a big play at present to compete in the ever-deepening trenches of global information technology.

In his tweet, the ICT minister vowed that the next supercomputer, whose development began today, will be named “Maryam” in memory of Mirzakhani.

He said the capacity of “Maryam” will be 100 times more than Simorgh.

Maryam Mirzakhani, the internationally-renowned Iranian mathematician and the first female winner of Fields Medal, died of breast cancer in July 2017.

The 40-year-old mathematician, a professor at Stanford University, was the first Iranian woman elected to the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in May 2016, in recognition of her “distinguished and continuing achievement in original research.”

With past honorees, including renowned physicist Albert Einstein, and inventors Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell, being a member of the organization is considered to be as one of the highest achievements for scientists in the United States.

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi, says by launching the national information network it is not to cut the country’s connection to the internet and it is a wrong notion among the public.

Speaking on the sidelines of the government meeting yesterday, Azari-Jahromi defended the country’s efforts for launching the national information network, adding that people are wrong who think by launching this network, country’s connection with the international internet will be cut.

The National Information Network is an independent domestic network which enables Iranians to communicate without reliance on international Internet hubs.

The national scheme comprises several projects including but not limited to the expansion of the local fiber optic network, installation of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) and giving a boost to Content Delivery Networks (CDNs).

He added that recent disruption in the international system and especially in the WhatsApp application was because of the problem in the application’s own server. He added that Amazon Company which is in charge of transfer of data to Iranian users had imposed some restrictions which were resolved. He reiterated there is no disruption in the internet system.

On the problems of the domestic applications, he said they should improve their quality in case more users rush to use the applications.

Azari-Jahromi added that the ministry will support the education ministry for online education during the Coronavirus pandemic and will ease access to the internet services.

He added that all 1,100 universities and academic centers will be connected to the optical fiber in order to make education for free.

Major Cyberattack Against E-Gov’t Infrastructure Repelled

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

TEHRAN – ICT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said yesterday that a major cyberattack against the infrastructures of Iran’s e-government has been successfully repelled.

He broke the news while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

“Recently, a highly organized and state-sponsored cyberattack was carried out against our e-government infrastructures, which was successfully identified and repelled by the country’s cyber security shield,” the ICT minister told reporters.

“The attack was really massive,” he said, adding “I can’t disclose any details right now, but all aspects of the attack have been already discussed and there will be certainly a report on it later.”

“I can’t say the attack was carried out by which country right now,” he said.

Elsewhere, when asked about the possibility of another nationwide internet shutdown with the establishment of ‘national internet’, he said “National internet makes no sense. Internet is a global network, it’s not internal or external. The National Information Network is a different story from a national internet.’

“The National Information Network is being followed up by the ICT ministry in earnest, in accordance with the Leader’s directives, so that we can secure our share in the world,” he added.

“The aim of the National Information Network is to boost the country’s economic growth in the digital economy sector. What is being said about an internet shutdown is a sheer lie,” the minister stressed.

He also said that in order to have a great smart city, we should invest in it.

“Citizens are, of course, an important factor. The development of communication services and the development of cyberspace could raise people’s awareness,” he added.

The Minister noted, “Today, the smart people of Iran are looking forward to receiving smart services via the internet and cyberspace, and now we need to invest in this area as well.”

“The issue of paying attention to citizens and increasing their knowledge is one of the serious issues that is being pursued,” Azari Jahromi added.

Meanwhile yesterday American newspaper New York Times claimed that following recent unrests iin Iran, the details of 15 million Iranian debit cards were published online, exposing the account information of almost one-fifth of Iran’s population.

“This is the largest financial scam in Iran’s history,” conservative Iranian outlet Aftab News reported. “Millions of Iranians are worried to find their names among the list of hacked accounts.”

Iranian information and telecommunications minister Mohammad Jahromi denied the breach was the result of a hack. However, cyber experts told the New York Times the attack was likely carried out by a

The attack revealed a “high technological capability, which is usually at the hand of state intelligence services,” said Boaz Dolev, chief executive officer of cybersecurity company ClearSky.

Azari-Jahromi made the remark after the US administration imposed sanctions on him on Friday under the pretext of the minister’s role in Internet shutdown in the country following days of protests over fuel price hikes, according to IRNA.

He said that his ministry had no role in shutting down the telecommunications link during the unrest in the country, describing the US claims as lies.

If the US wants to expand Iranians’ access to information, “Why Iranian start-ups, businesses, and programmers have been deprived of so many requirements for their jobs in the field of technology?” he asked.

The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control added Azari Jahromi to its sanctions list that would freeze any of his property under US jurisdiction and prohibit Americans from any deals involving those assets.

It claimed that the Iranian minister had advanced a policy of “repressive Internet censorship,” a reference to a nationwide Internet shutdown during recent unrest after the government decided to raise gasoline prices.

In a post on his Twitter account on Friday, Azari Jahromi responded to the sanctions, saying the US had already targeted “ICT startups, Developers, Cancer patients and EB children.”

Iran ICT minister also pledged to keep advocating access to the Internet and not allow the US to prohibit Iran’s development.

On Friday, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned ICT minister, Azari Jahromi and added him to its sanctions list that would freeze any of his property under US jurisdiction and prohibit Americans from any dealings involving those assets, Press TV wrote.

It claimed that the Iranian minister had advanced a policy of “repressive internet censorship,” a reference to a nationwide internet shutdown during recent riots after the government decided to hike gasoline prices.

In a post on his Twitter account on Friday, Azari Jahromi responded to the sanctions, saying the US had already targeted “ICT startups, Developers, Cancer patients and EB children.”

He also pledged to keep advocating access to the Internet and not let the US prohibit Iran’s development.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council ordered the internet shutdown last week after a group of “saboteurs” were found to be using online services like navigation and maps to coordinate riots in large cities.

The protests erupted across the country on November 15, after the price of petrol was raised by as much as 200 percent.

The internet slowly trickled back on in Iran on Friday after a days-long shutdown.

Since Thursday, the outage began to slightly lift. By Friday, internet connectivity stood at around 15% of normal levels, according to the monitoring group NetBlocks.

No respect for democratic values

Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the US move to impose sanctions on Azari Jahromi, saying the US does not honor democratic values

“It is clear to everyone that the current US administration does not cherish democratic values and principles, transparency and human rights, including free [access to the] internet for others,” Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said on Saturday.

He added that a review of the US administration’s record shows that it has been exerting pressure on managers of major social networks and communication companies, such as Twitter, in order to silence the critics.

Such a policy reveals the White House’s “political and instrumental” approach to free Internet access.

Iranian Minister of Information and Communications Technology Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi took the reporters on Saturday morning to a space research center, where the domestically-made satellite was showcased undamaged.

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

Earlier in the day, Jahromi posted a picture of himself along with the telecommunication satellite, saying, “Me & Nahid 1 right now. Good Morning Donald Trump!”

It came one day after Trump posted on Twitter a black-and-white photo of what he claimed to be a “catastrophic accident” at the launchpad in a space center in Iran’s northern Semnan Province, saying it involved Safir (ambassador) satellite-carrier rocket.

“The United States of America was not involved in the catastrophic accident during final launch preparations for the Safir SLV Launch at Semnan Launch Site One in Iran. I wish Iran best wishes and good luck in determining what happened at Site One,” Trump said.

Some media reports said that the picture showed a third failed attempt by Tehran to lift a satellite into space.

Azari Jahromi, however, took to Twitter to reject the reports, saying, “Frankly, Nahid 1 is doing well, is in the laboratory, and reporters can come visit.”

Iran is expected to launch three satellites into orbit by the end of the year despite U.S. warnings against the country’s aerospace program.

The satellites include Nahid 1, which has Iran’s first foldable solar panels, as well as Zafar and Pars 1 sensing satellites.

Jahromi announced that final phases of delivering Nahis satellite to Defense Ministry are underway but the satellite has not yet been launched.

Jahromi made the remarks on Saturday while accompanied local journalists at the Tehran-based space research center, showing them the satellite.

Speaking about rumors circulated regarding Nahid satellite explosion at the space center meant to launch it, he said, “I have no idea about what American officials say over the Semnan space center and the defense minister, who is in charge, should make a comment on this”.

“But what we do know is that the Nahid satellite is still being prepared at the Iranian Space Research Institute,” the minister added.

TEHRAN – Iran’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi says the country’s first radio telescope has been launched into space and more astronomical services will be given to users shortly.

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

The minister said that the project is in line with the policy of making space technology more applicable.

During a Monday ceremony to inaugurate an EMC lab in Tehran, Azari Jahromi noted that the ten-year plan for the space sector has been completed and now a new plan should be devised, dolat.ir reported.

“For example, monitoring rice and poppy cultivation in the country used to be carried out through this space technology, and now we have localized this technology technically and scientifically.”

He also commented on the construction and launching of satellites as another mission of the Ministry saying that ‘Message’ and ‘Friendship’ satellites could not be put in the orbit, but this is part of the space knowledge experience that the country needs.

Azari Jahromi further announced that a telecommunications satellite called Nahid 1 will be launched in June adding that its construction process began in the second administration of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and ended in President Hassan Rouhani’s second administration.

“Nahid 1 is currently being delivered to the Ministry of Defence and is scheduled to be put 250 kilometres into orbit,” underlined Azari Jahromi.

According to the ICT minister, another satellite called Victory of Science and Industry would be placed 500 kilometers into the orbit next year as well, while the construction process of “Pars 1” will be finished.

“Based on these experiences, we will build “Pars 2” and “Nahid 2”, and work on “Geo” satellite in the future,” stressed the Iranian minister.

Azari Jahromi explained that the orbital points in the geo belong to Iran for the next two years, expressing the hope that the country would be able to orbit the satellite in due time.

Iran is one of the 9 superior states in building satellites beside the U.S., Russia, Europe and Canada.

Head of the Iranian Space Agency (ISA) Morteza Barari had announced in mid-December that his country’s plans to manufacture a home-made telecommunication satellite in the next few years.

“Building an indigenized telecommunication satellite within the next 7 years is atop the ISA’s plans,” Barari said.

In this meeting, Iranian ICT Minister Jahromi pointed to the country’s achievements in the fields of space and construction of satellites, saying the achievements pave the way for enhancing bilateral cooperation with neighboring Iraq.

Iran is determined to develop and broaden its cooperation with Iraq in various fields, Azari Jahromi maintained.

Digital economy is one of the important economic arenas in the world, he said, adding, “we are making comprehensive plans in this area. Since Iraq benefits from young and talented manpower, Iran is ready to launch joint cooperation with Iraq in this area.”

‘Transit’ and ‘cybersecurity’ are two important areas that Iran can cooperate with Iraq, he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Jahromi noted investment in Iraq in the fields of conventional and mobile phones as of the other areas of cooperation between the two countries and said, “in this regard, we have proposed to set up a joint working group for progressing and advancing relevant projects.”

The Iranian ICT minister also invited his Iraqi counterpart and Iraqi companies to take part in next year’s ELECOMP exhibition in Iran.
