“There are a lot of cultural similarities between Yazd and Linz, thus a number of Yazd city council members are seeking to create sisterhood between the two cities,” Gholamali Sefid, the head of Yazd City Council said on Saturday afternoon.

Sefid also expressed hope that the Austrian ambassador to Iran, who had recently visited the city, would help in that regard.

He also pointed to the existing potentials in Yazd province for investment, adding “Yazd is a very good place for investment in solar energy, and many European and Asian countries have also discovered these potentials and called for investment in this field.”

“Investors have either applied for constructing solar power plants on rooftops of houses, or for the construction of large solar power plants in appropriate places in Yazd,” he said.

Saying that Yazd has already been introduced as a sustainable energy city by the Energy Globe Foundation, the official noted that the foundation is in Austria, and this introduction shows that there is a good knowledge of Yazd in Austria.

He also called for increased communications between Yazd and Austria in the field of tourism, saying “if a flight route between Austria and Yazd-Isfahan and Shiraz is established, the [European] country can join Iran tourism triangle.”

Citing a “realignment of its portfolio”, the Austrian Airlines has announced changes in its route network and flight schedule.

The Iranian cities of Isfahan and Shiraz will no longer be represented in the Austrian Airlines flight offering as of September 2018, Aviation Tribune reported.

The traditional flight to the Iranian capital of Teheran will, however, remain unaffected.

Beginning October 2018, Austrian Airlines will also remove certain connections from its winter schedule, such as Hong Kong, Havana and Colombo.

“With the entire fleet and now 12 long-haul aircraft, we want to offer a denser route network and thus an improved offer for our passengers,” Austrian Airlines chief channel officer (CCO) Andreas Otto said.

The decision to stop Austrian flights to the Iranian cities came shortly after Dutch airline KLM said it will also halt flights to Tehran “as a result of the negative results and financial outlook” following the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

On May 8, the US president pulled his country out of the JCPOA, which was achieved in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Following the US exit, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the accord.

TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Austrian counterpart, Alexander Van der Bellen, exchanged views about a range of issues, including ways to boost bilateral relations between Tehran and Vienna in diverse fields.

In their meeting held in New York on Monday evening on the sidelines of the 72nd regular session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Rouhani hailed the growing relations between Iran and Austria.

Tehran welcomes closer ties with European Union member states, including Austria, he said, expressing the hope that cooperation between the two countries would develop more than ever.

Rouhani also said there are numerous investment opportunities in Iran that Austria can tap in various sectors, including energy, road, railway, banking, insurance, tourism, and technology.

The Austrian president, for his part, called for deeper ties between the Central European country and the Islamic Republic in all areas and said Vienna is willing to make direct investments in Iran.

The remarks come against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear program and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.

The comprehensive nuclear deal, known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.
