Ayatollah Bathaee, representative of Tehran in the Assembly of Experts, passed away at age 78 on Monday morning due to infection with coronavirus.

The cleric, who had been infected with COVID-19 died at a hospital in Qom, the city where the first cases of coronavirus in Iran were detected.

The Assembly of Experts is a high-ranking body that elects and oversees the activities of the leader of the Islamic Revolution. Members of the assembly are directly elected to office by people for an eight-year term.

The coronavirus has taken the lives of a number of major figures in Iran so far, including newly-elected MP Fatemeh Rahbar, ex-ambassador to Syria Hossein Sheikholeslam, newly-elected lawmaker Mohammad Ali Ramezani, former lawmaker Mohammad Reza Rahchamani, former ambassador to Vatican City Seyed Hadi Khosroshahi, adviser to the Judiciary chief Ahmad Tuiserkani, and Mojtaba Fazeli, the chief of staff of top cleric Ayatollah Shobeiri Zanjani.

The death toll from coronavirus in Iran rose to 724 on Sunday, while nearly 4,600 patients have recovered from the disease in the country so far.

“The unfortunate news and heartbreaking images from the bloody conditions of the oppressed Muslims of India, which are released at a minimal level, make the heart of every noble-minded human very sad,” read the statement by Assembly of Experts, signed by its chairman Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati.

The assembly decries the killings of the people and the destruction of mosques and religious places of the Indian Muslims, it added.

The high-ranking body further called on the Indian government to take swift measures to end the violence against Muslims.

Violence erupted in the Indian capital in late February, leading to a three-day-long rampage, with Hindu mobs attacking Muslim homes, shops, and mosques.

The attacks were carried out on protesters who have been rallying against a new citizenship law after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kapil Mishra threatened peaceful sit-ins would be removed from the streets.

The anti-Muslim violence in Delhi killed at least 50 people.

It was the worst violence in Delhi since 1984 when more than 3,000 Sikh minorities were killed following the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Ayatollah Jannati, a principlist politician and cleric, has been the Secretary of the Guardian Council since 1992. He was appointed as the chairman of Assembly of Experts in 2016, thus currently occupying two prominent posts in Iran’s political body which are in charge of choosing the Supreme Leader, and checking legislation approved by the Parliament with the Constitution and sharia, and approving the candidates in various elections.

The election for the Guardian Council board of governors takes place every year on the anniversary of the establishment of the Council.

The post has been vacant since December 2018, when the former deputy chairman of the assembly, Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi passed away.

Last week, Raeisi was also appointed as the judiciary chief by the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

He replaced Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, who had requested in late February to step down after nearly 10 years of service in the position.

The chief of the Iranian judiciary is appointed by the Leader for a five-year tenure that is extendable. Raeisi is the sixth chief to head the country’s judicial body.

Raeisi has held several top-level posts in the judiciary. He was the prosecutor of several cities, including the capital Tehran, Karaj and Hamedan, before serving as the prosecutor-general of the country. Later, He also became the head of the General Inspectorate Organization of Iran which is affiliated to the judiciary.

Since 2016, Raeisi has been the custodian of Astan Qods Razavi, a major institution in charge of the holy shrine of Imam Reza (PBUH), the eighth Shia Imam.
