TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s first research institute of aviation industry has been officially launched, the Iranian Atmospheric Science and Meteorological Research Center (ASMERC)’s office of public relations announced.

The institute has been established by the Transport and Urban Development Ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, Iran Meteorological Organization, and the Road, Housing and Urban Development Research Center, IRNA reported.

As a subsidiary of the ASMERC, the country’s aviation industry research institute will operate in the form of three research groups including management of knowledge development and technology for designing and construction of commercial aircrafts, management of knowledge development and technology for aircraft Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO), and management of knowledge and technology for aviation and airport transportation.

Prior to this, ASMERC had three research institutes namely Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences institute in Tehran, Climatology and Climate Change institute in Mashhad, and Meteorology and Agriculture institute in Ilam.

ASMERC has been working in 14 different research groups to conduct studies and research related to pure meteorological knowledge and recognition, development and presentation of applied systems.

Having the oldest airline in West Asia and second oldest in Asia, Iran started developing its aviation industry nearly 80 years ago and this industry is still improving in the country.

Developing this industry would have major positive outcomes for the country’s economy; in addition to creating new job opportunities for thousands of people; it will increase the air traffic while creating a capillary network across the country which would impact all other economic areas like industry, agriculture, tourism, trade and etc.

The Iranian Atmospheric Science and Meteorological Research Center was established in 1989 with the aim of meeting the scientific needs of the country in the related areas.

Tehran (Iran News) – In the line of the Integrated Programme for Sustainable Water Resource Management in the Urmia Lake basin, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in collaboration with Iran’s Atmospheric Science and Meteorological Research Center (ASMERC) held a validation workshop to examine the newly developed Combined Drought Index (CDI) for Urmia Lake basin.

The workshop convened on 05 November 2019 at the ASMERC office in Tehran and was attended by the experts and researchers from FAO and ASMERC. Also, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Agriculture Jahad, and the Iran Meteorological Organization will attend the workshop. Moreover, the National Drought Center, the Urmia Lake Restoration Program (ULRP), the University of Tehran, Sharif University of Technology and Iran University of Science and Technology are attending.

The participants were briefed on the rationale, procedures, and methodology employed to develop CDI. They further discussed different potential variables, components, and indices that can be taken into consideration in the following steps to fine-tune the CDI.

Mr. Gianluca Franceschini, the FAO Senior Land Resource Information Management Expert who co-led the workshop said, “Today, the first results of drought assessment and drought measurement methodology were presented and discussed in detail”.

He added, “This was the first attempt for the country to provide such information which looks at this phenomenon from different meteorological, agricultural and hydrological dimensions.”

Praising the efforts made by the National Drought Center, Mr. Rao Matta, the FAO Chief Technical Advisor emphasized, “Drought measurement is an important component for overall basin management in Urmia Lake catchment area and we need to identify what kind of variables need to be incorporated into the CDI.”

According to Dr. Behdad Chehrenegar, the Head of Hydroinformatics Division of the ULRP, a well-developed CDI assists the Country “to have a vulnerability assessment of the whole Urmia Lake basin to see the effect of the changes in climate variables on the livelihood and socio-economic parameters in the area.”

“The process we followed in this project not only has the potential to apply to different basins of the Country but also to be beneficial for other Middle Eastern countries”. Said the Head of National Drought Center, Mr. Ahad Vazife.

Funded by the Government of Japan and jointly implemented by FAO to assist Iran in drought management of Urmia Lake basin and ULRP, Integrated Programme for Sustainable Water Resource Management in the Urmia Lake basin supports the efforts of the Country in improving its institutional and knowledge capacities to restore this unique biosphere reserve.
