Armenian-Catholic church condemns US sanctions on Iran

Armenian-Catholic church in Tehran has issued a statement condemning US officials’ claims that minorities’ rights in Iran are violated as ‘biased’, expressing the Iranian Christians’ concern over the US sanctions.

“Catholic Armenians, in line with the international community, express their concern over the imposition of new sanctions that affect all Iranians, including religious minorities,” the statement issued on Monday by the Armenian-Catholic church in Tehran reads.

The members of the Catholic Armenian community of Iran will be affected by the cruel US sanctions against the country, like their fellow Iranians, the statement adds.

The statement emphasizes that the claims made by some US officials saying that rights of religious minorities are violated and there is a lack of freedom to perform religious rites are ‘biased and unfounded’.

It adds that in Iran Catholic Armenians freely express their religious beliefs and perform their religious rites.

It also condemns the opportunistic US approach to the rights of minorities in Iran, while the rights of people of color in their own country are violated.

The statement, at the end, calls for peace and co-existence among the followers of different religions as a demand from God, along with preserving the country’s independence and peace for all.

My roots are in Iranian and Armenian cultures

TEHRAN – Iranian-Armenian filmmaker Anahid Abad, whose latest drama “Yeva” has been selected to represent Armenia at the Oscars, has said that she has her roots in the cultures of both countries.

She made the remarks in an interview with the Persian service of ISNA on Monday after the co-production by Iran and Armenia was submitted to the 90th Academy Awards in the best foreign-language film category.

“I’m really happy that this film has been chosen for the Oscars, because it is a joint production of Iran and Armenia,” Abad said and added, “Due to my dual nationality, I have my roots in the cultures of both Iran and Armenia and I really love both of them.”

She said that she has learned cinema in working with some prominent Iranian filmmakers as an assistant director, but “Yeva” as her directorial debut, which has been made in Armenia, directly represents the history and culture of the country.

“Yeva” has been co-produced by Iran’s Farabi Cinema Foundation and the National Cinema Center of Armenia.

The film tells the story of Yeva, a young woman who escapes her influential in-laws with her daughter Nareh after her husband’s tragic death, and takes refuge in one of the villages of Karabakh, Armenia.

The film is currently on screen in several Armenian cities.

Distributor censures illegal screening of Iranian films by Armenian club

TEHRAN – The director of Iranian Independents, a company marketing Iranian independent feature and documentary films, has criticized the unauthorized screening of four Iranian movies at the AFG Film Club in Yerevan, Armenia.

“Breath” directed by Narges Abyar, “Lanruri” by Reza Dormishian, “Born in 1987” by Majid Tavakoli, and “Life + 1 Day” by Saeid Rustai have been screened at the AFG Film Club during Contemporary Iranian Cinema – New Voices, a program that began on February 7, Mohammad Atebbai told the Persian service of ISNA on Sunday.

“The organizers had the permission of the movies’ owners for screening,” noted Atebbai who is the international distributor of “Breath” and “Lanturi”.

Dreamlab in Paris is the distributor of “Born in 1987” and “Life + 1 Day”.

The program, which was proposed and presented by Armenian director Serge Melik-Hovsepian, will come to an end tomorrow.

“The organizers have apologized for the issue and have stated that no tickets were sold for the program and that screenings were held only for a small, select audience,” Atebbai said.

The organizers said they obtained the movies from a representative of the Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival, who had bought the movies on DVDs in Tehran.

Atebbai said that the explanation is unacceptable “because the films have been screened with English subtitles while the films prepared for Iran’s home video markets do not have any subtitles.”

Atebbai guessed that the films were leaked from the Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival.

Still, he said that he would pursue the matter in order to determine that how the movies were leaked to the AFG Film Club.

Iranian, Armenian culture ministers meet in Tehran

TEHRAN – Iran’s Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Seyyed Abbas Salehi and Armenia’s Minister of Culture Armen Amirian met in Tehran on Tuesday to discuss the expansion of art and cultural relations.

Salehi pointed to the high potential of Iranian artists in different arena including cinema, music and theater, and stressed that art and cultural collaboration can lead to increased cooperation between the two countries, the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance announced.

Amirian also called the meeting a good opportunity to deepen cultural and media relations.

He said that the Armenian film weeks held in Iran several times have had respectable impacts in his country and expressed his hope that such events would continue to evolve.

He also said that he has watched several Iranian films and have enjoyed the films, calling Iranian filmmakers very professional.

The minister said that Armenian cineastes can also make use of the potentials through exchanging experiences and making joint productions with Iran.

He also proposed that Iranian and Armenian orchestras give joint performances in the two countries in the future.

“The Servant” praised at Armenian event

TEHRAN – “The Servant”, an acclaimed animated movie from Iran, won an honorable mention at the Fresco International Film Festival in the Armenian capital of Yerevan last Thursday, the publicist of the movie announced on Saturday.

Directed by Farnush Abedi, the film is about a servant who becomes a master and a bug becomes his servant. After a while, the man understands that he has begun a game that has no rules.
