TEHRAN (Iran News) First Vice President Mohammadreza Aref says that this year’s Arbaeen pilgrimage proceeded smoothly without major issues, crediting effective planning and coordination among government agencies.

The event was held “magnificently” with strong public participation despite high temperatures, Aref said on Monday while speaking about the annual commemoration which marks the end of the 40-day mourning period following the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH), the third Shia Imam and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.

“Thanks to the experiences of past years and the good planning and measures taken by the ministries of interior, and roads and urban development, as well as other responsible institutions, the ceremonies were held in a dignified and glorious manner with the presence of diverse groups of people,” Aref said.

He emphasized that the presence of pilgrims this year was “exceptional,” with an estimated 20 million attendees. “This massive turnout demonstrates the capacity of Islam and Shiism,” he noted.

Aref also criticized enemies seeking to sow division among Muslims, stating, “If Islamic countries maintained their unity, enemies would not be able to advance their agendas or commit crimes like those in Gaza.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – “Fried chicken, fried fish, rice!” Mohammed al-Mohammedawi shouts to pilgrims passing his roadside food tent in Baghdad on their way to the holy city of Karbala on foot.

His tent is among hundreds in the Iraqi capital providing free food, shelter and even clothes to the thousands of pilgrims making the 90-kilometer journey to Karbala, which will take them two to three days, for the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage, Reuters reported.

Local men founded a volunteer group ‘Ahbab al-Zahra’ to assist the pilgrims after the fall of Saddam in 2003, who had for decades banned the pilgrimage.

Arbaeen marks the end of a 40-day mourning period for the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein (PBUH), martyred in a battle in 680. The climax of the pilgrimage will be held on Thursday (October 8) in Karbala.

Although their operation had been growing ever since 2003, this year is different, Mohammedawi said.

With the coronavirus continuing to spread in Iraq and with new cases averaging around 3,000 to 5,000 per day, the Iraqi government decided to limit the number of foreign pilgrims to 1,500 per country of origin.

Neighboring Iran has banned flights to Iraq and closed land borders due to the pandemic. Last year, about two million Iranians visited Iraq for Arbaeen. Mohammedawi said he also noticed a decrease in Iraqi pilgrims this year.

But fear of the pandemic did not deter ‘Ahbab al-Zahra’s Sattar al-Souaidi from volunteering.

Mohammed Yousef, a pilgrim from Kirkuk, was trying to respect protective measures by keeping his distance and wearing a face mask, but still stopped to mingle and enjoy the free food.

The head of Baghdad’s Operations command, Qais al-Mohammedawi, told Reuters a number of security force units were deployed to raise awareness among pilgrims about the dangers of the pandemic.

Earlier on Monday and during his visit to Shalamcheh border, in Khuzestan Province, the Iranian minister said that the process of serving Arbaeen pilgrims is good and valuable, adding that the necessary measures are foreseen for the return of the pilgrims.

He expressed satisfaction over the performance of Shalamcheh crossing and mentioned that serving the Arbaeen pilgrims across the border of Iran-Iraq continues.

The highest number of pilgrims has crossed Shalmacheh. Some 850,000 Iranian and foreign pilgrims entered Iraq via the Shalmacheh border crossing during the past two weeks.

Speaking with ISNA, deputy chief of operations for Iran’s Police Force Hossein Sajedi-Nia said the Arbaeen pilgrims have entered Iraq during the past two weeks.

About three million Iranians have registered for the rally on Iran’s SAMAH automation system, a legal process which does away with the need to get an Iraqi visa, Iran’s Central Arbaeeen Committee said, Press TV reported.

Iranian authorities have predicted that more than three million mourners will take part in this year’s Arbaeen pilgrimage, topping numbers in previous years.

Thousands of non-Iranian Arbaeen pilgrims have also entered Iran, joining the trek for Karbala.

The foreign pilgrims come mostly from Iran’s neighboring countries, such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and Turkey.

Earlier this week, Sistan-Baluchestan Police Chief Brigadier General Mohammad Qanbari said that more than 40,000 pilgrims had entered the country from Pakistan alone.

Millions of pilgrims from across the world gather in Iraq’s holy city of Karbala to mark the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The gathering is known to attract about 20 million participants every year. This year’s Arbaeen falls on October 19.

This year’s Arbaeen pilgrimage takes place as Iraq is recovering from several days of protests against mismanagement and corruption last week.

Some of the demonstrations descended into violence and bloody clashes. Violent protests have receded in the past days, however.

Last week, some Arab media outlets reported a US-backed plan seeking to influence the protests in a bid to create instability and push certain political agendas in the country.

Observers have pointed out that the timing of the provocations signals foreign-backed elements seek to undermine Arbaeen processions, specifically through fueling antagonism toward Iran.

On Sunday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei tweeted that “Iran and Iraq are two nations whose hearts & souls are tied together through faith in God”.

The Leader said that an enemy plot seeking to “sow discord” between the two nations has failed and will fail.

Tehran (Iran News) – Commander of Iran’s Border Police Brigadier General Qassem Rezaei highlighted his forces’ full control over the country’s borders and said there is no threat to the security of Iranian Arbaeen pilgrims visiting neighboring Iraq during the Arbaeen season.

Speaking at a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart at the Mehran border crossing in the western province of Ilam on Monday, Brigadier General Rezaei said, “Security for Iranian Arbaeen pilgrims has been provided 100 percent.”

“We have good intelligence dominance on the borders,” he said, adding, “Developments in the border areas are monitored by the most up-to-date control equipment and with coordination between the Iranian and Iraqi border guards and no danger threatens the security of the pilgrims.”

The top commander further pointed to the large number of pilgrims crossing the Mehran border and said the “desirable” security, the existing infrastructure, and the proximity to the Iraqi holy cities have made the border the first choice for the pilgrims.

This year, the four borders of Khosravi, Mehran, Chazzabeh, and Shalamcheh are open to Arbaeen pilgrims.

Arbaeen, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shiite Imam.

Each year, a huge crowd of Shiites flock to the Iraqi city of Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

In August, Iran and Iraq signed an agreement in Tehran to reopen the Khosravi border crossing and remove visa restrictions for Iranian Arbaeen pilgrims.

Iran and Iraq also agreed to raise the level of services and facilities for the pilgrims and enhance border security during the Arbaeen season, which will culminate in a large gathering in Karbala on October 19.

“To ensure the security of this year’s Arbaeen, we will use modern equipment, drones and all we have at our disposal,” he told Mehr on Saturday.

Every year Shia Muslims from across the globe came into Iraq to commemorate the 40th day after Ashura. Pilgrims travel miles on foot to reach the shrine of Imam Hussain in Karbala. Providing security for a dozen million people who attend the ceremony is achieved by cooperation between different Iranian Armed Forces, such IRGC, police, with Iraqi security bodies.

Capabilities of forces for increasing Arbaeen security grows by the day, highlighted Fadavi.

According to reports, some 14 million pilgrims took part in the March of Arbaeen last year, 2.35 million of which were Iranian pilgrims.

The trek symbolizes of a peaceful utopia where no one is hungry or homeless. People are giving away free food and drinks, offering their houses to the pilgrims, and pilgrims themselves are treating one another as brothers and selflessly regardless of their social class, race, color, religion, etc.

Thousands of Mawkibs (voluntarily prepared stations providing pilgrims with free food and place to rest) , stalls providing free of charge foods, beverages, accommodation, and medicines, are set up along the way to Karbala and the holy shrines as many believe that taking care of pilgrims of Imam Hossein (AS) and serving them is a religious duty.
