Bushehr and Dayyer Ports Poised to Become Iran’s Export Hubs to Arab Countries

TEHRAN (Iran News) Khurshid Gazdarazi, head of the Bushehr Chamber of Commerce, said the head of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization has agreed in principle to designate Bushehr Port as Iran’s main export gateway to Dammam, Saudi Arabia, mirroring the current role of Dayyer Port as the country’s primary export hub to Qatar.

“Bushehr’s proximity to the Persian Gulf states provides a strategic opportunity to expand regional trade,” Gazdarazi told ILNA. “Given that Bushehr ports are the closest Iranian ports to Dammam, we proposed the province be positioned as Iran’s representative in trade with Saudi Arabia—a proposal that received support from national authorities.”

Currently, Iranian goods are exported to Saudi Arabia indirectly through Kuwait. Gazdarazi emphasized the need to enhance port infrastructure to align with the province’s growing commercial potential. “As trade and economic exchanges grow, so must our port facilities. The Ports and Customs Organization must invest in the necessary upgrades to realize this vision.”

Dayyer Port already serves as a transit hub in addition to an export site, but Gazdarazi highlighted the urgent need to upgrade infrastructure in both ports, especially Bushehr. He called for the dredging of Bushehr Port to a depth of 14 meters to accommodate large cargo vessels with capacities exceeding 50,000 tons, which are expected to arrive in the coming months.

With nearly 700 kilometers of coastline, Bushehr Province hosts 10 active commercial ports, including Kangan, Genaveh, Deylam, Kharg, and Asaluyeh. While Dayyer plays a key role in fruit and vegetable exports to Qatar, mineral exports are mainly handled through Bushehr Port.

Addressing Iran’s trade presence in Qatar, Gazdarazi mentioned the Iran Trade Center in Qatar was launched during the current administration. The Iran-Qatar Joint Chamber of Commerce has recommended the center operate under private sector management with government oversight. This approach was welcomed during a recent visit by the head of the Trade Promotion Organization to Bushehr, who agreed that Bushehr Province would represent Iran’s Chamber of Commerce at the center. The center is expected to resume operations later this year.

Commenting on the broader trade landscape, Gazdarazi said any easing of U.S.-Iran tensions could positively impact Iranian trade. “Sanctions have raised the cost and risk of international trade for Iranian exporters. When forced to use third-party countries, not only do costs increase, but risks multiply. Easing these pressures would undoubtedly help expand Iran’s export markets.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran exported $2.5 billion worth of non-oil commodities to its Arab trade partners during the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 20-August 21, 2020), announced the director general of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO)’s Office of Arabian and African Countries.

According to Farzad Piltan, the Arab trade partners for exported commodities include Iraq, the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Syria, Qatar, Jordan, Lebanon, and Bahrain, IRNA reported.

Among Iran’s top trade partners, Iraq was ranked the second export destination, followed by UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Syria, and Qatar.

The official said, the exports to the Arab partners decreased by about $3.5 billion in the said period compared to the corresponding figure of last year following the outbreak of the coronavirus and the closure of Iran’s borders with neighboring countries.

However, this decline is expected to be partially compensated for by the end of this year (March 2021), following the reopening of borders and the resumption of international trade.

The value of Iran’s total non-oil trade during the first five months of the current year stood at $24.6 billion, about $5 billion more than the figure for the first four months.

According to the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), Mehdi Mirashrafi, the significant increase in the value of trade was an indication that the negative impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on Iran’s foreign trade has eased.

Iran’s top five non-oil export destinations during this period were China, with over $3 billion worth of exports, Iraq with $2.4 billion, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with over $1.55 billion, and Afghanistan, with $871 million, and Turkey, with $513 million.

WEST SIBERIA/ TYUMEN – Since the appointment of Yahya Sinwar as head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, there has been an expected shift in the Palestinian organization towards the Axis of Resistance. Whereas with Iran and Hezbollah the main points of the contradictions over Syria were successfully overcome (it is worth pointing out that the military wing-al-Qassam Brigades never severed ties with Tehran), the problem of relations between Hamas and the Syrian government itself has yet to be resolved. Iran News cover the story by TehranTimes.

To clarify this further, I suggest we attempt an examination of a series of official statements delivered by Hamas representatives from year 2017 to 2019. Thus, it can be seen that the arrival of Sinwar influenced the revision of the former position of the leading Palestinian party on the Syrian issue, which can be found in official statements and various media resources referring to Hamas representatives. Thus, these statements can be interpreted as positive signals from the new Hamas leadership towards official Damascus.

So quotes:

28.08.2017 – Yahya Sinwar stressed that a “breakthrough” had occurred in the Syrian crisis, and he said that it would offer an opportunity to improve relations between Hamas and the Assad government . “We are waiting for the right time to restore that relationship so that Hamas remains out of the power struggles in the region. We are adopting a ‘zero-problems’ policy with all parties, so as to serve the Palestinian cause,” Sinwar said.

11.06.2018 – Ismail Haniyeh talks about Hamas relationship with Syria.

22.03.2019 – Fawzi Barhoum: “Hamas vehemently condemns the Trump’s announcement that the US administration recognizes the Israeli occupation’s sovereignty over Golan Heights, occupied by the Israeli occupation in 1967.”

25.03.2019 – Ismail Haniyeh: “The Trump administration’s weird decisions would not alter the history and geography of Syria. The Golan Heights are a Syrian territory and the US decree could not abolish the Syrians’ rights to Golan.”

3.04.2019 – Ali Baraka, told Al-Monitor that Hamas’ condemnation of the US Golan decision is a matter of principle that applies to any Arab land subjected to aggression.

28.05.2019 – Hazem Qasem said “The Israeli bombardment on Syrian and Lebanese territories is a continuation of the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Arab nations”.

01.07.2019 – Hamas condemns the appalling Israeli occupation’s attacks on Syria and its deliberate killing of Syrian in cold blood.

20.07.2019 – Ismail Haniyeh told Turkish journalists that he hopes relations with Damascus can be “repaired and rebuilt.”

09.07.2019 – Mahmoud al-Zahar told the Beirut-based Al-Nahda news website – “I think we should not have abandoned Assad. We would have been better off not taking sides in the crisis from the very beginning”.

26.07.2019 – Yahya Moussa told Al-Monitor “The return of Syria’s role in the region will be a plus for all Arabs”.
