“The statements of the [Persian] Gulf and Arab summits were ready in advance and we were not consulted on them,” Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani told the Al-Araby broadcaster.

“Qatar has reservations on the Arab and [Persian] Gulf summits because some of their terms are contrary to Doha’s foreign policy,” he added.

“We hoped the Mecca summits would lay the groundwork for dialogue to reduce tensions with Iran,” the top diplomat said in comments reposted on Twitter by his ministry.

“The Mecca summit ignored the important issues in the region, such as the Palestine issue and the war in Libya and Yemen,” he went on to say.

Qatar is not the first Arab state to reject the final statements of the emergency meetings in Mecca. Following the talks, Iraq also opposed the communiqué issued by the Arab participants.

Iraq, which maintains close ties with neighboring Iran and has strong ties with Washington as well, objected to the communiqué, which required “non-interference in other countries” as a pre-condition for cooperation with Tehran.

Iraqi President Barham Salih asked the gathering to support his country’s stability, arguing that rising tensions with Iran could cause war. He voiced hope that Iran’s security would not be targeted.

“We are watching before our eyes the escalation of a regional and international crisis which can turn into war that will engulf all. If the crisis is not managed well, then we will be faced with the danger of a regional and international confrontation which will bring tragedy to our countries,” Salih said.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is a Muslim country that is a neighbor to Iraq and Arabs. It is certain that we do not wish the security of Iran to be targeted. We share a common border that is 1,400 km long and a long history and relations, and it is also certain that the security of a fellow Islamic country is in the interest of Arab and Islamic countries. The region needs stability based on a mechanism of joint security that guarantees non-interference in internal affairs and the rejection of violence and extremism,” he added.

The statements mainly cited concerns about the recent sabotage attacks against several ships off the UAE. Both Saudi and Emirati officials have blamed the mysterious “sabotage” attacks on Iran while Iran has strongly denied any involvement, and offered to sign non-aggression pacts with the Persian Gulf Arab states.

“Turkey’s political participation in such a meeting that targets one country is out of question,” a senior Foreign Ministry official told the Hürriyet Daily News on Feb. 12.

Turkey’s position with regard to this summit is clear. It sees this meeting as against Iran and therefore has decided not to take part in it.

“We are therefore not dispatching any representative to this meeting. Our embassy in Warsaw will follow it.”

This decision is based on Turkey’s principles, the official explained, stressing that its non-participation should be interpreted as the Turkish government’s distance to the US-led initiative.

“In a statement in Cairo during a trip to Egypt, US Secretary of State Pompeo had unearthed the real motive of this initiative. In line with its principles, Turkey has always been against such moves,” said the official.

Russia, Lebanon, Palestine and Qatar also are not attending the Warsaw meeting. The European Union countries which have been critical to Washington’s anti-Iran policies will also be displaying low-level participation.

In a late Monday Twitter tread, Hamid Baeidinejad announced his latest views regarding the upcoming conference dubbed as ‘Ministerial to Promote a Future of Peace and Security in the Middle East’ which is going to be held on February 13-14 in Warsaw.

“Poland has announced that it will invite Palestinian foreign minister to discuss prospects of peace in the Middle East which is a new incident and shows that Iran is not the focus of the conference,” Iranian envoy said.

He notes that the conference will not have a ‘negotiated’ statement and will solely be consultative, adding, “Poland is determined to approach its stance to that of Europe.”

In another tweet, he maintains that the decision of EU members of UN Security Council at their meeting in Brussels can strengthen EU’s position regarding international issues against the United States and it can be ‘start of a new movement’.

Washington announced that it will co-host the event to gather more support for its pressure campaign against Iran. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said she would not attend the event while ministers of several European countries are also likely to skip the summit.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Bahram Ghasemi said Monday that the US is after sewing discord among Iran and some European countries.

A Polish deputy foreign minister arrived in Tehran on Monday after Iran’s strong protest at an anti-Iran conference that Poland is going to co-organize with the US in Warsaw next month.

Poland’s Undersecretary of State for Economic Diplomacy, Development Cooperation, Asia, Africa and the Middle East Policy Maciej Lang held a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi this morning.

The meeting took place after Iran’s strong protest at a so-called conference on Middle East peace and security that the United States is going to hold jointly with Poland in Warsaw on February 13 and 14.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in January that the meeting would “focus on Middle East stability and peace and freedom and security here in this region, and that includes an important element of making sure that Iran is not a destabilizing influence.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has denounced the planned event in Poland as a “desperate anti-Iran circus.”

Zarif has also reminded Poland of the favor that Iran has done the Polish during the second world war, noting, “Polish government can’t wash the shame: while Iran saved Poles in WWII, it now hosts desperate anti-Iran circus.”

A U.S. effort to enlist Europe in its pressure campaign against Iran faced a setback after officials said ministers from several European Union members will likely skip a summit organized by Washington on Iran and the Middle East.

The summit, which will be co-hosted by Poland and the U.S. and take place in Warsaw, was announced during Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s tour of the Middle East last week. The two governments said it would focus on terror, extremism and missile proliferation in the region and threats posed by proxy groups, activities Washington has accused Iran of engaging in or promoting.

Mr. Pompeo said the meeting would bring together dozens of countries to “focus on Middle East stability…and that includes an important element of making sure that Iran is not a destabilizing influence.”

The choice of Poland, a member of the EU, to co-host the summit was seen by some European diplomats as an effort to split the EU over Iran.

The bloc is a strong supporter of the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal and is seeking to help retain economic ties with Tehran despite renewed U.S. sanctions on Iran following President Trump’s decision in May to withdraw from the nuclear deal.

The U.S. withdrawal, however, has driven many European companies to leave Iran for fear of being targeted by U.S. sanctions.

On Thursday, a senior EU official said EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini wouldn’t attend the Warsaw gathering because of a prior engagement. Ms. Mogherini has spearheaded EU efforts to sustain the 2015 deal, which offered Iran relief from sanctions in exchange for steps to curb its nuclear program.

The senior EU official said the bloc remains unclear on what vision of peace and stability in the Middle East the Feb. 13-14 summit will aim to promote. There is “a lot of uncertainty about participation of many other EU member states at ministerial level,” the official said.

European diplomats said in recent days that France is unlikely to send its foreign minister. Britain and Germany haven’t decided who will represent them. Luxembourg’s foreign minister said he would miss the event because of a prior arrangement.

One European diplomat said the bloc wouldn’t be “joining an anti-Iran coalition.”

The Iranian foreign ministry summoned Poland’s ambassador to protest the summit on Sunday.

The “Polish government can’t wash the shame: while Iran saved Poles in WWII, it now hosts desperate anti-Iran circus,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif wrote on Twitter.

Polish officials have been trying to play down the Iran focus of the summit. Poland’s foreign minister has asked to formally raise the meeting at a regular EU foreign-affairs meeting on Monday, EU officials said.

The Iranian ambassador to Poland held talks with a Polish deputy foreign minister to convey Tehran’s concerns over an anti-Iran conference scheduled to be held in Warsaw next month.

The meeting took place at the request of the Polish official, German broadcaster Deutsche Welle reported on Tuesday.

During the meeting, the Iranian envoy, Masoud Edrisi Kermanshahi, conveyed the Islamic Republic’s concerns over the European country’s decision to host the conference that the US is going to hold against Iran from February 13 to 14.

According to the broadcaster, the two sides agreed to continue their consultations on the issue.

Recently, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reacted to the planned conference in a tweet and said, “Polish Govt can’t wash the shame: while Iran saved Poles in WWII, it now hosts desperate anti-Iran circus”.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News in an interview on Friday that Washington will jointly host a global summit focused on Iran and the Middle East in Poland next month.

During World War II, up to two million Polish civilians were arrested by the Soviet secret police and deported to Siberia and Kazakhstan. Many did not survive the long journey (lasting many weeks) by cattle train; many more died during their imprisonment.

Many others simply failed to get out after finally being freed from the Soviet gulags. A total of 120,000 Polish people, 3,000 of whom were orphans, escaped from the Soviet Union to Iran, starting a new life in the central province of Isfahan.
