The Best International Short Animation award of the 20th Lebu International Film Festival went to ‘Song Sparrow’, directed and produced by Farzaneh Omidvarnia from Iran.

After winning in the Chile Short Film Festival, the Iran/Denmark production is now qualified for Oscar 2021 after winning the award in the Oscar-qualifying festival.

The animation depicts a group of refugees who, in search of a better life, pay a smuggler to take them across the border in the back of a refrigerated meat truck to a safe country.

‘Song Sparrow’ uses puppet animation to tell this tense tale based on an actual event that happened in Austria in 2015.

The people in the animation represent different ages, races, colors, and cultural backgrounds, all of them willing to put their lives on the line in search of a dream, while in reality having little choice.

Cinelebu is the only film festival in Chile qualifier of short films for the Oscar Awards in the categories of International Animation, Regional and International Fiction.

French animator Alexandre Athané was the presenter of the workshop titled “How to make a self-taught short animation film?” that was held at Isfahan’s Central Library on the sidelines of the 32nd Iran’s children film festival.

Winner of the prize for the best animation at the previous edition of the International Film Festival for Children and Youth (IFFCY), Alexandre Athané said that he was invited to the event again to hold the workshop for those who are interested in making animation.

“Animation making is a multidimensional task and anybody who wants to be an animation maker is required to know a minimum level of the technology, the state-of-the-art cinema tools, and knowhow of the directing animations,” he said.

Animation dates back to long time ago that the Neanderthals started to draw paintings of animals on the walls of caves, most of which are still there, he said adding that this shows that animation is based on paintings.

Speaking on the links between cinema and animation, Athané said, “Animation means movement of the picture and paintings, and cinema and films are too defined as the same.”

Referring to feedbooks, he said that everyone can use its paintings in consecutive frames to make an animation film. Then, you will get an idea of the number of pictures that you need for making an animation, the French artist said adding that he had made some 10,000 paintings for his first animation.

“If you have an open, strong mind, you will certainly find making animations an enjoyable activity, and even the skill can nurture the mind for doing other tasks,” he noted.

Explaining about the starting point of an animation work, Athané said that there is no need to have a live model as your main subject. Rather, he added, the world of animation is much wider than you can imagine. So, one can start with an object, he said noting that all of the time of an animator should be spent for making the story of the animation.

“I would advise you to start with painting and drawing sketches. This trial and error will let you awaken your sense of creativity. So, be patient and let your feelings help you be on the right track. Feelings and creativity can bring you ideas that nobody else has even thought about them.”

The session was followed by screening of two animations, and the French animator elaborated on the time spent on each part of the films.

The tragedy of Rostam and Sohrab forms part of the 10th-century Persian epic Shahnameh by the Persian poet Ferdowsi. The poem is a story of mistaken identities, narrating a battle between a father and a son who have no idea about their relations until it is too late.

Lee Whitmore’s retelling of the myth is based on a poem of the same name by Matthew Arnold. The watercolor animation is about “a young charismatic English teacher who reads the poem to her students, a group of naïve 14-year-old girls whose main concerns are pop music and nail polish. The poem takes the girls on a journey to ancient Persia and a legendary fight between two warriors Sohrab and Rostam. The poem ends tragically and the girls are confronted with the reality of the death of Sohrab the younger and less wily warrior. In the last stanza watercolour images of the night sky over the mighty Oxus River are a reminder of the beautiful eternal nature of life. The girls return to their class puzzled but wiser.”

The festival’s main prize went to ‘Parasite,’ the South Korean black drama that previously won the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

Sydney Film Festival ran June 5-16, 2019, but will continue to play a selection of popular films for the next four days. Voting for the audience awards remains open until Wednesday, according to Variety.

“Am I a Wolf?” directed by Amir Houshang Moein and “Son of the Sea” directed by Abbas Jalali Yekta will take part in the “Perspectives Short Films in Competition” section.

“Starvation” directed by Zahra Rostampour will represent Iran in the “Graduation Short Films in Competition” section.

A total of 220 animations from 88 countries will be screened in different sections during the 6-day event.

Animated films from Spain, Romania, France, Denmark and China, along with three Japanese animations will compete in the “Feature Films in Competition” section.

According to Variety, Japan may not appear to be a particularly surprising choice for the spotlight nation at the 2019 Annecy. But since 1999, when Annecy last so honored Japan, much has changed, and 2019 finds Japanese animation bursting with creative and commercial potential and sitting on the verge of a global breakout.

The international film festival was created in 1960 and takes place at the beginning of June in the town of Annecy, France. Initially occurring every two years, the festival became an annual event in 1998. It is one of the four festivals supported by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA).

Directed by Mojtaba Mousavi and produced by Elaheh Farnia, ‘Mr. Deer’ is a 20-minute stop motion animation which utilizes the puppet technique to narrate a story set in an unknown time, in a ruined subway station which is similar to those in modern European societies. People in this society have animal faces and have forgotten humanity. The World Festival of Animated Film – Animafest Zagreb, established in 1972, is the second oldest film festival in the world completely dedicated to animation.

The 28th edition of the festival was held from 4 to 9 June 2018 at different locations across Croatian capital city Zagreb.

‘Mr. Deer’ is also taking part in the competition section of 42nd Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, scheduled for 11-16 June.
