TEHRAN (Iran News) Amnesty International has urged the global community to impose immediate economic sanctions on Israel over its ongoing war on Gaza.

Agnes Callamard, the Secretary-General of Amnesty International, told Al Jazeera that Israel’s genocide in Gaza would not have been possible without the complicity and support of states, organizations, and companies.

She said thousands of companies worldwide have directly backed Israel, prolonging the occupying regime’s war on Gaza.

Callamard described the occupation of Gaza City as a crime aimed at erasing the culture and history of Palestinians through forced displacement.

Economic sanctions must be imposed immediately against Israel, she said, adding that mere verbal condemnation is not enough.

Her comments came as international pressure on Israel continues to grow.

Alon Ben David, a military analyst for Israel’s Channel 13, recently acknowledged in an article for the daily Maariv that Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet are facing unprecedented global isolation.

He noted that not only the Arab and Islamic world but also a majority of countries worldwide are united against Israel.

According to Ben David, more than 140 countries are now preparing to formally recognize the Palestinian state, underscoring Israel’s growing diplomatic isolation.

Amnesty International: E.U. reluctance to suspend cooperation with Israel is a ‘cruel and unlawful betrayal’

TEHRAN (Iran News) Agnes Callamard, the secretary general at Amnesty International, said that the European Union’s failure to suspend its cooperation agreement with the Israeli regime is a “cruel and unlawful betrayal” of the Palestinian nation, according to Amnesty International’s official website.

“The EU’s refusal to suspend its agreement with Israel is a cruel and unlawful betrayal of the European project and vision, predicated on upholding international law and fighting authoritarian practices, of the European Union’s own rules and of the human rights of Palestinians,” Callamard said.

She further pointed out the union’s collusion in Israeli crimes against Palestinians, saying, “The E.U.’s own review has clearly found that Israel is violating its human rights obligations under the terms of the Association Agreement. Yet, instead of taking measures to stop it and prevent their own complicity, member states chose to maintain a preferential trade deal over respecting their international obligations and saving Palestinian lives.”

On Tuesday, the foreign ministers of the European Union met in Brussels to discuss suspending collaboration with the regime and imposing sanctions; however, the proposed measures, including suspending the trade agreement, arms embargo, or restrictions on visa issuance, were dismissed.

The secretary general also said, “European leaders had the opportunity to take a principled stand against Israel’s crimes, but instead gave it a green light to continue its genocide in Gaza, its unlawful occupation of the whole Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), and its system of apartheid against Palestinians.”

The European Union’s cooperation agreement with the Israeli regime has been in force since 2000. This agreement forms the main framework for political, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two sides.

It is worth mentioning that despite the union’s recent decision to continue cooperation with the Israeli regime, several European states, including Ireland, Spain, Belgium, and Slovenia, have called for the suspension or immediate review of this agreement over the past months.

In a series of tweets in Arabic, Amnesty called for the Saudi King to “immediately” release 81-year-old Al-Khodari and his son Hani “without a restriction or a condition”, noting they “have been detained for more than a year in Saudi Arabia.”

The rights group added, “During their detention, Dr Muhammad al-Khodari and his son Hani al-Khodari were subjected to grave violations of their human rights, including forced disappearance, arbitrary arrest and incommunicado detention.”

It pointed out that the “two men, Al-Khodari and his son, have not had any legal representation since their arrest,” the Middle East Monitor reported.

Amnesty said that the two were scheduled to be brought before the Specialised Criminal Court, Saudi Arabia’s counter-terror court, yesterday, noting that “they have no legal representation”.

It also expressed concerns about the life of Al-Khodari, who “requires adequate medical attention and treatment for cancer” and said that he is at risk of contracting COVID-19 in prisons.

Al-Khodari has been living in Jeddah for nearly three decades, and was responsible for managing Hamas’ relationship with the kingdom for two decades.

Amnesty International said that Al-Khodari appeared before the court with his son on March 8 as part of a mass trial of 68 people, and added that he is facing charges of “joining a terrorist entity” and “establishing institutions within the kingdom to finance Hamas”.
