Alireza Karimi knee surgery successful

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Alireza Karimi, the Iranian freestyle wrestler who was suffering a torn-ACL injury undergone a successful knee surgery this morning in a hospital in Tehran.

Dr. Sohrab Keyhani said that the knee surgery has gone excellent, hoping that Alireza Karimi could get back to the mat in the determined time.

“He had a complete torn ACL and performing surgery was a good decision,” he said. According to physicians, Karimi needs seven months to gain full recovery.

He suffered a knee injury in late December 2019 at the World Wrestling Clubs Cup held in Bojnurd, northeast Iran. Doctors had been using a non-aggressive PRP therapy combined with special training to treat his injury so that he could reach the 2020 Olympics. In early March, he announced his return to the mat and continuation of his training in his hometown Karaj.

However, as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics has been postponed for a year, the medical team of the wrestling federation was mulling over whether to perform surgery or not.

Karimi needs to win the required points in qualifying events to secure his ticket to Tokyo.

Iranian freestyle team has so far gained three out of six quotas for the Olympics. The qualifying events have been postponed for 2021.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian freestyle wrestling star Alireza Karimi who injured some three months ago is now continuing his individual training as he hopes to get recovery to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

He was injured in late December 2019 at the World Wrestling Clubs Cup held in Bojnurd, northeast Iran. Doctors used a non-aggressive PRP therapy combined with special training to treat his injury.

Now as the country is battling with the novel coronavirus outbreak, all the sports events and training have been canceled which includes that of wrestling teams that were preparing for the Olympics qualifying events.

However, Alireza Karimi is carrying out individual recovery training in his hometown, Karaj. “Wrestlers have to prepare themselves for the Olympics and should not waste the time; therefore, I’m trying to not abandon training by doing it in Karaj for now,” he told Mehr News Agency.

He said that he is gradually recovering from the knee injury and has just returned to the mat.

“Unfortunately, the virus has messed up everything, including the national team’s camps. We still have not gained the Olympics quota in three weight categories which include my own category (97kg). I hope we can reach the ideal conditions after getting through these days and depart for the Olympics after securing all the remaining quotas.”

Officials of the Iranian Wrestling Federation and coaches of national freestyle and Greco-Roman teams are due to hold a meeting today with the Sports Ministry authorities on required camps and training ahead of the Olympics.

Iran’s Karimi seizes bronze at Wrestling World C’ships

Alireza Karimi Machiani from Iran won a bronze medal at the men’s senior freestyle Wrestling World Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Monday.

He beat his Georgian rival Dato Marsagishvili 12-1 at the 92kg.

The other bronze at this category was snatched by Japan’s Atsushi Matsumoto, edging Mongolian Turtogtokh Luvsandorj 6-5.

J’den Cox from the U.S., a bronze medalist at the Rio Olympics and Paris World Championships while competing at 86kg, defeated Ivan Yankouski from Belarus 4-1 at 92kg.

Hassan Yazdani Charati and Parviz Hadi Basmanj had already two bronze medals this competition.

The competition is the first senior World Championships to use a ranking system to determine competitive seeds.

Previously athletes were put into brackets using a random draw, though the new system was announced at last year’s Championships in Paris.

Under the new system – set to be applied across all 30 weight categories at this year’s event – only wrestlers who finished within the top four of the pre-World Championships competition calendar are eligible to receive a seed.

The seed is non-transferable to another wrestler from the same National Federation, while if the seeded athlete does not enter their designated weight, then the seed moves to the next highest ranked wrestler.

Wrestlers may not carry their seed from one weight class to another.

The rankings on which the seeds are based, were determined by tallying points acquired at Continental Championships and several ranking series tournaments.

Freestyler Karimi seizes gold for Iran at Asiad

TEHRAN – Alireza Karimi Machiani snatched a gold medal in the freestyle wrestling at the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday.

The Iranian wrestler defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Magomed Musaev 6-0 in the men’s 97kg.

Karimi beat Japanese Takeshi Yamaguchi 11-0 in quarter-final and defeated Uzbekistan’s Magomed Ibragimov 4-2 in the semi-final.

Magomed Ibragimov and South Korean Kim Jae-gang jointly won the bronze medal.

Hassan Yazdani in 86kg and Reza Atri in 57kg had also won two gold and bronze medals respectively for Iran in the Games.

The 2018 Asian Games, officially known as the 18th Asian Games and also known as Jakarta Palembang 2018, is a pan-Asian multi-sport event scheduled to be held from 18 August to 2 September in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.

The athletes compete in 465 events across 40 sports and 67 disciplines.

These are the 18th edition of the quadrennial event.

Iranian wrestler Karimi banned for six months

Iranian wrestler Alireza Karimi has been handed a six months ban for deliberately losing a bout to avoid facing an opponent from Zionist regime.

United World Wrestling (UWW) has confirmed the sanction and also handed a two year penalty to his coach Hamidreza Jamshidi.

An investigation was launched in December after it was alleged that Karimi had lost the quarter final of his under-86 kilograms freestyle contest at the 2017 Under-23 World Championships in Bydgoszcz on purpose.

He lost to his Russian rival Alikhan Zhabrayilov, who went on to win the gold medal in the Polish city, 14-3 on November 23.

It has been ruled that Jamshidi instructed his wrestler, a two-time Asian champion and a Senior World Championship bronze medalist, to lose.

“The chamber found that Karimi, on instruction of his coach Jamshidi, willfully lost his quarter finals match against Alikhan Zhabrayilov. Both wrestler and coach were found to have acted in direct violation of the International Wrestling Rules and the UWW Disciplinary Regulations,” a UWW statement said.

Iran and Israel do not have diplomatic relations with the countries seen as bitter enemies.
