Persepolis far from their own style against Al Hilal

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Persepolis suffered a 3-0 loss against Al Hilal in the 2021 AFC Champions League quarters and fell far short of expectations.

Persepolis’ performance against Al Hilal was not satisfactory regarding the team’s potential and as their coach said they deserved to lose.

Persepolis’ style is usually pushing the opponents back with high pressing but in the match against Al Hilal, the Reds preferred to defend in their own half and dominant Al Hilal maintained possession of the ball as a result.

There were some tactical mistakes which allowed the hosts to put Persepolis under overwhelming pressure.

Vahid Amiri is one of Persepolis’ key players but he was very exhausted since the player was playing his third matches in nine days. Amiri played as left defender and midfielder in the matches against the UAE and Korea Republic in 2022 World Cup qualification but he was used as a forward in the match against Al Hilal.

In my opinion, he didn’t meet the expectations because the change of playing place can cause confusion for every player.

Furthermore, iconic attacking midfielder Mehdi Torabi, who was supposed to shine in this match, was completely disarmed by Al Hilal midfielders and defenders. They had neutralized Torabi’s threat in the left flank.

Finally, I believe that Persepolis were derailed by their own mistakes. No matter what result is, the matter is they fell far short of expectations. They could have played more satisfactory at least regarding their strengths in the midfield and defensive lines. The gap between the two areas let Al Hilal to make goalscoring chances for their forwards on and on.

Persepolis have to learn lessons from their awful display.

And life goes on.

Iran’s Persepolis Out of AFC Champions League

TEHRAN – Persepolis of Iran football team was held to a 2-2 draw by Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal (6-2 on aggregate) in the second leg of the AFC Champions League semi-final.

On Tuesday at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, Oman, Godwin Menshah and Omar Kharbin each scored a brace for Persepolis and Al Hilal respectively.

Persepolis took the lead through Menshah’s 16th minute header after Vahid Amiri dispossessed Al Hilal’s Mohamed Al Burayk on the flank and crossed for the Nigerian to head home.

Omani referee Ahmed Abu Bakar showed Persepolis’s penalty spot 14 minutes later, however Al Burayk was fouled outside the penalty area by Persepolis defender Mohammad Ansari.

Kharbin chipped the penalty past goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.

Menshah added his second in the 61st minute after he beat defender Abdullah Al Hafith to Ali Alipour’s backpass and fired into the bottom corner.

The Syrian striker’s fifth goal against the Iranian team over the two legs brought Al Hilal level in the 76th minute.

Persepolis Has Still Another Match

TEHRAN – Persepolis Nigerian striker Godwin Mensha says that they have suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia in the first leg of the AFC Champions League semi-final but things are not done yet with the return leg in Muscat three weeks’ away.

“It was a difficult game for us because the team was weakened due to injuries and suspensions, but we tried to do our best,” said Mensha, who joined Persepolis in the summer.

“We tried to react when the first goal was scored but got hit with a second, and we ended up getting caught in a downward spiral.”

Persepolis is already in uncharted territory having never progressed further than the Round of 16 but, having confidently dispatched another Saudi side Al Ahli in the quarter-final, will have been disappointed with the result in their first semi-final tie.

Nevertheless, Mensha is adamant that things are not done and dusted yet.

“This was not our final game, we still have another match in Oman and we will do our best,” he added.

“The next game we obviously have to improve, play better and play stronger to get a better result. At the very least we need a positive result,” Mensha concluded.
