TEHRAN (Iran News)- Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud, in a conference in Tehran on Tuesday, voiced his country’s enthusiasm for having Iranian companies and investors in the Syria reconstruction in the war-torn regions.

Addressing a conference on investment opportunities in Syria, held at Trade Promotion Organization of Iran this morning, Mahmoud said that grounds have been paved for the participation of Iranian investors and contractors in different sectors of the Syrian economy.

He said the Syrian government considers the Iranian private sector its main partner in the reconstruction and economic projects.

Syria has been involved in a war against terrorism since 2011 when the sporadic uprisings in the country were used by extremist groups backed by some states in the region and the West. Most of the occupied territories in Syria have been retaken by government forces and the stability has been restored to the country.

Early in September, more than 60 companies and firms from Iran showcased their capabilities, products and potentials at the 61st edition of Damascus International Fair in Syria, bidding for contracts on reconstruction projects in the war-torn country.

Director-General of Syria’s General Organization for International Exhibitions and Fairs Ghassan Al-Fakiani said on September 07 that more than 60 companies from Iran were participating in the 61st Damascus International Fair.

He added that initial talks and necessary coordination had been made with the Iranian companies for signing contracts in the near future.

Al-Fakiani also put the number of visitors to the Damascus Fair of 2019 to be at more than 1.4 million people.

He added that the exhibition had a total area of 90,000 square meters (22.2 acres).

In the event that kicked off on September 07, companies from different countries such as Iran, Russia, China, India, Brazil, Portugal, Algeria, Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, Oman, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Czech Republic showcased their products.

Iran has been trying hard to grab the lion’s share of the Syrian market as it threw its support behind the Syrian government during the past eight tough years.

Also in September, Iranian and UN officials in a meeting in Tehran conferred on the latest developments in Syria, discussing the ways to soothe the crisis in the war-hit country and start reconstruction projects.

In July, Advisor to the Iranian Parliament Speaker Hossein Amir Abdollahian, in a meeting with Syrian Parliament Speaker Hammouda Sabbagh in Damascus, said that Iran will fully support Syria politically and economically, adding that Tehran is determined to throw its back behind the Arab country’s reconstruction.

Syrian President Bashar Assad has recommended the Iranian companies’ participation in the reconstruction of the country, he said, adding that this is an ample opportunity for Iranian firms to become active in Syria.

“Considering the signing of the long-term agreement, we have taken a big step towards expanding our economic activities, and this is the beginning of a larger movement for the development of business activities between the two countries and will provide the ground for the participation of Iranian private sector in Syria,” he said.

A long-term economic agreement was signed today between the two countries after the same meeting by Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami and Syrian Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Mohammad Samer al-Khalil.
